For my Rocky Mountain brothers and sisters... and all Michigan ex-pats out west...

Just announced on the local 6:00 PM news here that the Colorado Avalanche will host the mighty, 23 years straight in the playoffs and counting, the 11 time, count 'em ELEVEN, Stanley Cup Champion, Detroit Red Wings at Coors Field in February of 2016!!!

First Michigan at Utah this fall and now Wings in Denver -- life is good in the mountains!!!

Go Blue!

Go Wings!

These outdoor games are being done to death.

One a year was fine in the NHL. That made it more special. Now? They have to squeeze every penny out of the concept by having a "stadium series" which included a game in LA last year.

Just......why.

Even Michigan is playing an outdoor game every year. The location of this year's outdoor game is a prime example of why these things need to be stopped and only played once in awhile, ON CAMPUS for the college teams.

Are outdoor games a unique as they once were?  No.

But the Classic and Stadium Series still represent only 0.3% of all regular season games.

I still think it's pretty cool and will eat it up regardless of the money grab.  We're spoiled growing up in Michigan and having the Wings around.  The novelty of the 7 outdoor games per season is good for hockey for the parts of the nation which doesn't otherwise pay attention to the NHL.

That's stupid as you drive in from any direction you hit foothills or mountains. That's like saying Grand Rapids, Michigan isn't a Great Lakes City, because it doesn't touch the Great Lakes.

Telluride is a mountain city.  Salt Lake is much more of a mountain city than Denver.  Not a big deal either way.

Outstanding point.  The Avs haven't done shit since the Statue of Wah play.  They bled their farm system dry too trying to keep pace with the Wings and later the Blues (personal family rivalry between those two owners).  They teased last season but have come back down to Earth this year.

They need to just do a winter classic in the US and host a heritage Classic in Canada. The stadium series is over doing the whole thing and ruining the outdoors thing

I'm just waiting for the "real" Mystery Alaska game. New York Rangers vs some other NHL team on a pond in Alaska.

Stevie Weeks will "shoot" too fast and toy ponies will take big shits.

God, I wish it was still a rivalry. That had to have been one of the greatest sports rivalries in it's time, if not the best. Still excited for it though. I was hoping the wings were going to host them for the Winter Classic a year or two ago before Toronto happened.
