OT: What's your football of choice to toss while tailgating tom before Neb game?
Currently in the midst of a heated debate with a co-worker. Which football do you think travels further (same person throwing each): the original nerf turbor or the nerf vortex? I am strongly in the nerf turbo camp; perhaps it's a personal preference as I often describe the turbo being to me what Lamar Latrell's javelin was to him.
We will be settling this bet next week when we have both items in hand (original turbos no longer sold for some reason, hard to come by).
Lastly, how far do you think Shane Morris could throw each? The mention of Morris makes this relevant to the blog. Got 'em!

Actually I was watching the Michigan basketball game with a similarly aged friend when a nerf gun ad came on. He was telling me how his kids middle school has a club where the kids come after school with their guns and have a mini nerf-gun war in the gym. That's wild to me. I feel like when I was kid, parents would have kiboshed that stuff under the "you'll shoot your eye out" or "guns aren't supposed to be toys" categories. I've thought the country has gotten more conservative and ridiculously protective of kids so I'm a little surprised that this little phenomenon has gotten to where it has.
Just sayin'

I graduated from high school in 2003 and was allowed to have a fully functional M-16s and M-4s in school. Used to practice field stripping them for ROTC. They assured the parents it was safe because we "didn't have ammo" and they were "practice guns". Well aside from the box I snagged out of my father's gun safe (5.56 is not hard to get your hands on).
It's more like these days no one has a clue how firearms operate, so they believe lies like "It doesn't have ammo and there is no way the kids could get ammo for them".

There are few things more dangerous than an "unloaded" gun.

I love a good OT thread as much as anyone here, but my god, man, did you seriously just start a thread based on Nerf toys?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM ^
Yes, yes I did. Mods can delete if nobody is interested. Thanks for reading.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM ^
Dude, we play Nebraska tomorrow.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:48 AM ^
You're right, I should be studying more film.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:47 AM ^
Really?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM ^
I have a question - the subject matter is pretty clear in the thread title. why in the hell do people go to threads they have no interest in?
November 18th, 2011 at 1:30 PM ^
Edit: Meant to explain why people get upset at posts like these.
It is because this is football season, and thus general OT posts are not allowed at the moment. The following is taken from a UV post towards the beginning of the season
Off topic season is over.It is game week and we are putting on our game faces. Most off topic posting is hereby illegalized until after the Ohio State game. The exceptions:
local pro teams in moderation
general college football in whatever quantity you'd like
As a reminder that will forever go unheeded, threads about the Big Ten and Michigan opponents are on topic

I go to them for 1 of 2 reasons:
1. Because sometimes titles are misleading and the content is actually interesting...
or
2. To hypocritically rag on the person who created the thread if I don't find the content/topic interesting.

The original, nothing beats it! There glad I could help.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
the first hit on Google. I'm not sure where that leaves us
November 18th, 2011 at 11:55 AM ^
Really? What did you search for? I typed "nerf vortex" and this wasn't on the first page of results, and same thing for "nerf turbo."
November 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
Now that you changed the title, I will go with a medicine ball.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM ^
It needed to be more focused on the game against Nebraska tomorrow that I will be watching on a TV and have a huge impact on if I am not focused on Nebraska right now.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
I'm glad to see you finally understand the impact you have on the game!

Whichever one has the revolutionary whistling technology.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
I hated when people caught my Vortex by the fins, but they complained that the whistles would jam their fingers.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:55 AM ^
well, since no one else responded - either a 1997 purchased standard wilson college football used for my IM flag football team, or a 1970s era silver and blue franklin make football that's about half the size of a real one. i can't grip a real nfl ball well. too big.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm right there with you, see my response below. The regulation NFL ball is too big for my little girly hands.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:47 PM ^
The NCAA footballs are actually larger than the NFL balls.
I know this sounds lame, but since I'm not an athlete, it's fun to chuck around the youth size footballs because they're so easy to grip and launch about forty yards.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:00 PM ^
Now every time I see your name the first thing I'm going to think is, how you have tiny little girl hands :)
November 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM ^
Personally I huck around a junior high Nike football. Good grip and small enough that you can absolutely launch it without feeling like you're playing with toys (i.e. Vortex).
But to answer your initial question: the Vortex goes about 7,000 times further by my calculations.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
Seconded. Anything leather and smaller since the womenfolk and kids on average have smaller hands.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
in honor of throwing the football with your boy.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:00 PM ^
When I was a kid looking at footballs, I asked my brother whether to go with the "youth", "collegiate" or "nfl" sized football. His advice was to go with the nfl, because, "You're going to have to get used to it someday." Well, he was wrong about that, but I never regretted getting the NFL ball. Dream big I say.
Go with the Wilson F1100 they use on Sundays. Nerf footballs are for girls who cant throw footballs.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:01 PM ^
How old are you? If the answer is less than 12, then this is fine. Otherwise, go buy a real f-ing football. That way your friends/kids/friends' kids won't think you're total dork.
Mine is a Nike Pro-tech or something like that. It's a good purchase.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
32. lost my only child a year ago. I don't think he thought I was a dork, most of the time at least. thanks.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^
I'm sorry Nick, I didn't mean for this to be a real dig on you or your family. As a young father, I feel for you.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:18 PM ^
I cannot imagine.
But with this in mind, you've got to go with balled up newspapers and grey tape. Then when its time to go to the game, you chuck it as hard and as far as you can. For the little buddies who aren't with us.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
How do you go on man? Sometimes I look at my two and I think that if something happened to them, I myself would probably die afterwards. Not suicide, but of a broken heart.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:05 PM ^
Nothing beats the Duke.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:07 PM ^
Love the Duke, but must admit there is something aesthetically pleasing about seeing the blur of the white lines on the college football when a tight spiral is thrown.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
Don't waste my time: It's the Vortex.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
Does anyone remember the Luminator football? It had a light inside so it was bright orange in the night sky. And it came with light-up bracelets so you could see where to throw it.
edit: found the old commercial
November 18th, 2011 at 12:43 PM ^
That thing hurt like hell when you caught it on the battery pack.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:14 PM ^
Normally I would be opposed to such a frivolous thread on the eve of a huge game, but then you get me picturing one of the most over the top gay characters in movie history throwing a custom, pliable, Nasa inspired javelin and you get my approval. For the record, my approval is worthless.

Just ask John Elway
November 18th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
An regular leather ball. I have a Nike pro something. Good grip. Manly look throwing it around. Still easy enough to throw with a beer in my off hand.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^
Funny thing is, it's useless debates like this that make the work day go by faster in the office.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:42 PM ^
Nerf footballs are a good idea at tailgates when Tacopants is around.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
I'm curious how far people think they can throw people who throw Nerf footballs.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
I throw a medicine ball before every game. Bare chested. Pants hitched up to the navel. Handlebar 'stache dancing gently in the autumn breeze. Quart of rye in my free hand.
That is tailgating. Your foam-padded sewing circle deserves no mention at all.

Wilson GST.
November 18th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
THIS.
Seriously, there's nothing like a brand new GST for like $20-$30. Best ball for the money IMO. And they stay tacky for like 2 years if you stay on grass.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
I have this Nike football that I love.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Seems to have better grip than the others. Grip is good.
