OT: US vs. Wales in the World Cup

Submitted by VCavman24 on November 21st, 2022 at 1:56 PM

November has arrived, which naturally means that it is time for the World Cup.  The United States faces off against Wales in a few minutes (2:00 p.m. EST).  This is the first World Cup game for the US since a hard-fought loss against Belgium in the Round of 16 in Brazil in 2014.  For Wales, this is the first World Cup they have qualified for since they reached the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden!

In earlier group play, England trounced Iran, 6-2.  (Yes, Wales and England have separate teams, and yes, they coincidentally are in the same group.)

The over/under for the game is 2.5 goals, while the US is favored by 0.5 goals.

Picked up a VPN for this specific reason. Absolutely positively have no interest in most all of Fox's broadcasters. Although Ian Darke is great. All of the world's best broadcasters are broadcasting the World Cup for free on BBC/ITV in England or SBS in Australia.

That way, Chad Ochocinco is never on my TV talking about whatever it is Fox thinks I should hear from him.

i would love for the US to win but i feel like this is going to be a disappointing year and they don't make it out of the group stage. not qualifying in 2018 set them back a bit

Was so excited about soccer and the US making the WC, and was fun to see LAFC win the MLS Cup, but just can’t get into the WC (yet).  Not sure if it is just because nothing but The Game matters this week or because Qatar and its slave labor casts a negative shadow.  US vs England should be fun though.

So the "irony" of the situation is we got our one goal on a counter in one of the few times that Wales tried to push forward.

It's VERY difficult to play the style that Wales is playing. You have to be organized. You can't let the fact that you haven't touched the ball keep you from taking advantage in the rare occasions when you do have the ball.

They've been confused, out of sorts and are likely going to try to change tactics in the second half to get back in this.

I do enjoy watching the World Cup and Olympic soccer, but that's about it.  To me, it is mostly a slower, less exciting form of hockey.

And this still holds true from almost every game I've watched:

About five billion people don't give the tiniest crap what you think. But at least you got your chance to make really, really clever observation the umpteenth about soccer players being soft, flopping, whatever. Now back in the crapper with yr bad self.

Hockey has diving too - but 1) not nearly as much and 2) never with such embellishment.  To me, it has seemed that diving has increased as the rules on hits & fighting have tightened up.  I feel that it is taking away much of the true nature of the game, but I also like the song "Hit Someone" by Warren Zevon (although for some reason my wife hates that song despite liking other Zevon songs... strange.)

Every now and then a real strain of lowlife nasty flows through this board. Usually it's manifested by people by people with inspired names that use numbers or letters, and who appropriate memes from hackneyed sources like the above. Warren Zevon--anything you're consuming culturally that isn't ages old and totally played?
