I get that he’s Urban Meyer and this is a Michigan blog, but why is everyone convinced he will be like Saban in the pros and not Pete Carroll? And Saban didn’t exactly fail in the pros. He just didn’t like it.

I don’t know if he will be successful or not but i know a couple of things. One, he tends to run his qb quite a bit, especially when things get dicey. Lawrence isn’t gonna want to do that. Two, he says in college that you have to look for easy scores and simplify your offense because college athletes can’t constantly drive 80 yards without mistakes. Will that thought process work when you play good defenses and you have to drive the field consistently. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out for him.

At this point it would be hard for anyone to disagree. Harbaugh not only got to the NFC Championship multiple times he went to the Super Bowl. His record was excellent and he was the guy who identified Kaepernick as a player. Tanned and Rested NFL version Jim Harbaugh was, indeed, a jackhammer.

Agreed, 49ers Harbaugh was a force of nature- it's a big part of what made us so excited for him to come to Michigan. Harbaugh was 44-19-1 in four years with 5 playoff wins, very unlikely Urban is going to top that. It's going to be interesting to see how Urban does at Jacksonville, but he may not even make it four years.

Depends on the roster he has and the assistants he brings in. Meyer has a great track record, sans Zach Smith, of hiring assistant coaches.

Do I think he’s going to build a team that can beat KC and win Super Bowls? Probably not. But I could see him building a team that is far better than the one we saw under Doug Marrone. He’s also in one of the weaker divisions in the NFL, and definitely the weakest in the AFC. The Texans are a mess, the Colts have no long term answer at QB and are not in position to draft a difference maker there this year, and while the Titans are very good, they’re beatable. I think he could contend for some division titles, and if Lawrence truly turns out to be the real deal, who knows what else?

He was undefeated i think with a traditional QB in alex smith.  I can't imagine him passing on Lawrence for Fields, like se have suggested.

Passing on Lawrence alone is a fireable offense.

The only justification he’d have for doing that is if Lawrence flat out stated “If Jacksonville drafts me, I will not play for them.” In that situation, fine, trade down and let the Jets, Falcons and Texans (assuming Watson walks out) eat each other alive trying to make you trade offers for that top spot. Take their king’s ransom and draft Fields instead. SOMEONE will be happy to mortgage the next 5-7 years of their team’s future to draft that kid.

But otherwise, if Meyer voluntarily passes on Lawrence, he should pretty much be fired on the spot. That kid is the best QB prospect since Luck. Maybe even since Peyton.

He’s a great motivator and has a great track record with hiring assistants, so I could see it working. But a very strong argument can be made that he will lose more games next year than he did in his entire seven year tenure at OSU. And he’s not used to losing. He also won’t enjoy the same talent advantages he had in college. In fact, as it stands right now just about every team in the NFL is more talented than his. Granted, he gets the number one pick in the draft and is flush with salary cap space, so he has room to mold his team. But nothing is changing overnight. Not with that team.

What’s going to happen if he goes 5-11 next year? Will those health issues come roaring back? If the losses start piling up, it’s hard for me to envision him lasting more than two years. It’s not like the NFL is a more forgiving place for losing than OSU is.
