Funny...OSU has put more head coaches in the NFL than starting QB's
January 14th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
It will be interesting if he can succeed without the advantage of breaking and bending all sorts of rules that only exist at the college level.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:27 PM ^
Guess we'll have to wait a few more years...

I'm actually pretty intrigued to see how he does.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:39 PM ^
I get that he’s Urban Meyer and this is a Michigan blog, but why is everyone convinced he will be like Saban in the pros and not Pete Carroll? And Saban didn’t exactly fail in the pros. He just didn’t like it.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:17 PM ^
Players love Pete. They love his practices, they love his funny shit he brings, they love his energy ...all of it.
this would be a forces thing by Meyer. NFL players smell the bs, then call it out.
so all roses now, let’s see what happens after some Ls
January 14th, 2021 at 11:59 PM ^
Carroll was a head coach in pros before he was head coach at USC.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:41 PM ^
Apparently Urban got a tip from Zach Smith that there's a good strip club in Florida.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:44 PM ^
How's the pizza in Jacksonville?
January 14th, 2021 at 10:19 PM ^
Well if it's his favorite, Papa John's, it'll be exactly the same as anywhere else in the country.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:47 PM ^
I would love to see the interns that got him to sign the contract.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:51 PM ^
He will be successful. He is a great coach. Glad he isn't in Columbus anymore.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:52 PM ^
Hell yea.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:14 PM ^
I don’t know if he will be successful or not but i know a couple of things. One, he tends to run his qb quite a bit, especially when things get dicey. Lawrence isn’t gonna want to do that. Two, he says in college that you have to look for easy scores and simplify your offense because college athletes can’t constantly drive 80 yards without mistakes. Will that thought process work when you play good defenses and you have to drive the field consistently. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out for him.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:50 PM ^
If you can figure that out I would guess he can too.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:25 PM ^
He will draft Fields, realize he isn't accurate, get a few headaches and quit.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:30 PM ^
I feel for Harbaugh a bit here, it's like he took another L to Urban.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:19 PM ^
Harbaugh is the better pro coach. And anyone here who thinks otherwise is a homer.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:35 PM ^
At this point it would be hard for anyone to disagree. Harbaugh not only got to the NFC Championship multiple times he went to the Super Bowl. His record was excellent and he was the guy who identified Kaepernick as a player. Tanned and Rested NFL version Jim Harbaugh was, indeed, a jackhammer.
January 15th, 2021 at 9:05 AM ^
Agreed, 49ers Harbaugh was a force of nature- it's a big part of what made us so excited for him to come to Michigan. Harbaugh was 44-19-1 in four years with 5 playoff wins, very unlikely Urban is going to top that. It's going to be interesting to see how Urban does at Jacksonville, but he may not even make it four years.

Officially a Jagoff
January 14th, 2021 at 8:44 PM ^
Meyer is just waiting for the Notre Dame job to open.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:47 PM ^
I will turn on a Jacksonville game next year now.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:48 PM ^
Anyone see Urban being successful in the NFL?
January 14th, 2021 at 8:54 PM ^
What are you defining as successful? I don’t see him making Jacksonville a division champ, but I could see them being a tough out and much better than they have been.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
Depends on the roster.
January 14th, 2021 at 10:31 PM ^
Depends on the roster he has and the assistants he brings in. Meyer has a great track record, sans Zach Smith, of hiring assistant coaches.
Do I think he’s going to build a team that can beat KC and win Super Bowls? Probably not. But I could see him building a team that is far better than the one we saw under Doug Marrone. He’s also in one of the weaker divisions in the NFL, and definitely the weakest in the AFC. The Texans are a mess, the Colts have no long term answer at QB and are not in position to draft a difference maker there this year, and while the Titans are very good, they’re beatable. I think he could contend for some division titles, and if Lawrence truly turns out to be the real deal, who knows what else?
January 14th, 2021 at 8:52 PM ^
Sith Lord Emperor Meyer is finally gone!
January 14th, 2021 at 10:01 PM ^
Yeah because we really kicked Tressel's ass.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:01 PM ^
Hope he takes OSU's S&C coach, that would prob be biggest blow
January 14th, 2021 at 9:10 PM ^
But I thought he had health problems.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:17 PM ^
He was undefeated i think with a traditional QB in alex smith. I can't imagine him passing on Lawrence for Fields, like se have suggested.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:57 PM ^
Passing on Lawrence alone is a fireable offense.
The only justification he’d have for doing that is if Lawrence flat out stated “If Jacksonville drafts me, I will not play for them.” In that situation, fine, trade down and let the Jets, Falcons and Texans (assuming Watson walks out) eat each other alive trying to make you trade offers for that top spot. Take their king’s ransom and draft Fields instead. SOMEONE will be happy to mortgage the next 5-7 years of their team’s future to draft that kid.
But otherwise, if Meyer voluntarily passes on Lawrence, he should pretty much be fired on the spot. That kid is the best QB prospect since Luck. Maybe even since Peyton.
January 14th, 2021 at 11:31 PM ^
Alex Smith ran the ball a lot at Utah. Haskins would be the better example who couldn’t run for shit.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:30 PM ^
Take Hartline
January 14th, 2021 at 9:42 PM ^
I hope he's more like Spurrier/Saban in the pros and less like Pete Carroll/Jim
Harbaugh.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:51 PM ^
He’s a great motivator and has a great track record with hiring assistants, so I could see it working. But a very strong argument can be made that he will lose more games next year than he did in his entire seven year tenure at OSU. And he’s not used to losing. He also won’t enjoy the same talent advantages he had in college. In fact, as it stands right now just about every team in the NFL is more talented than his. Granted, he gets the number one pick in the draft and is flush with salary cap space, so he has room to mold his team. But nothing is changing overnight. Not with that team.
What’s going to happen if he goes 5-11 next year? Will those health issues come roaring back? If the losses start piling up, it’s hard for me to envision him lasting more than two years. It’s not like the NFL is a more forgiving place for losing than OSU is.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:59 PM ^
Can't wait for those medical issues to flare up in year 3 when they start out 2-7

I'm just glad he's leaving Columbus.

When this news was announced, a bulletin was simultaneously spread throughout all the sororities in Florida.

Urbz’ miraculous medical recovery continues to be one of the most heartwarming stories of the past few years.
January 15th, 2021 at 8:05 AM ^
Do we have a sense of what (if anything) Urban was doing behind the scenes at OSU?
January 15th, 2021 at 8:39 AM ^
OMG, how is Urban going to adjust to coaching players that get paid to play, don't live on a college campus, and don't ever attend classes? Oh, nevermind.
January 15th, 2021 at 10:14 AM ^
this info pleases me
