The theme for the Tigers season has been, "threaten, but do not score." The Tigers had Quintana on the ropes early and let him off the hook, and it was only a matter of time before a defensive miscue ended up killing the tigers.

I ask this as a serious question,  how can you handle the Hawk for an entire season? Even if I was a Sox fan I don't think I could handle his blantant homerism and stupid catch phrases. Steve Stone is great and offers quite a bit when it comes to color commentary but as a play-by-play guy Hawk is just the worst.

These two teams can drive anyone crazy. The Sox can win with their pitching, but their hitting is really streaky. I really don't know what's going to happen. But when they're on, Sale, Peavy, & Quintana can all pitch. Humber, now in the pen, had a perfect game, and Floyd, if healthy, isn't bad either.

The thing with the Sox is that Konerko, Pierzynski, Rios, Dunn, Viciedo, De Aza, and Youkilis can all hit. They're streaky, but if all of them are hitting, that can be a formidable lineup. And their defense is pretty good.

Regarding Hawk, I listen on the radio more than I watch TV. But I guess homerism is something you either like or hate. Bob Ufer was an incredible homer, but I liked him. Same with former Cubs announcers Harry Carey and Ron Santo. In Chicago, we generally like it when Hawk calls it as he sees it with an umpire missing a call.

Still, I don't think too many broadcasters top Ernie Harwell & Paul Carey as a team. I lived in the Detroit metro area from 1974 through 1990, which meant that they were the only broadcasters I ever heard while following the Tigers. I still remember many nights as a teenager hearing and enjoying their melodious voices, the harmony and rhythm and cadence of their broadcasts. T'was a beautiful thing, and they had the pleasure of the 84 season.

I am a Sox fan.  My wife and my son are Tigers fans.  Strangely enough, they have found that Hawk is very entertaining.  Mainly the phrases he uses like -

  • Good Guys
  • He Gone
  • Stretch, Stretch, Stretch
  • You Can Put it On the Board

The fun that they have is when a White Sox player strikes out I get to hear 2 people saying "He gone!"  Same thing when the Tigers hit a home run, I am sure to hear "You can put it on the board!"  We always laugh about it because he is so much of a homer, that he becomes almost non-threatening.  I'll agree that he isn't for everyone, but he can be pretty comical at times because of how one sided his opinion is.

No team that's only 6 games over .500 at this point in the season has any chances of making the playoffs, even with an extra wild card spot available.

I am quickly losing hope with this team. I've never been one to criticize Leyland's lineup decisions, but why would he bat Raburn #2 and Infante #8? This team is really frustrating.
