OT- Tigers-Orioles game 1

Submitted by WMUgoblue on

Well it's playoff time, here's tonight's pitching matchup.

Detroit

  • Max Scherzer
  • 18-5, 220.1 IP and a 3.15 ERA
  • FIP: 3.12
  • K/9: 10.29
  • BB/9: 2.57

Baltimore

  • Chris Tillman
  • 13-6, 207.1 IP and a 3.34 ERA
  • FIP: 4.01
  • K/9: 6.51
  • BB/9:2.86

After a horrific start to the season Tillman has really come on during the 2nd half to become Baltimore's pseudo Ace.

Living in Baltimore this is sort of a dream come true for me, hopefully the Tigers have a good showing here and take a split back home to Comerica with them. I'm heading over to Camden in about 20 minutes but here's a gamethread in case anyone wanted it. EAT EM UP!

EDIT: Posting starting lineups here too

NO. Detroit Baltimore
1. I. Kinsler, 2B N. Markakis, RF
2. T. Hunter, RF A. De Aza, LF
3. M. Cabrera, 1B A. Jones, CF
4. V. Martinez, DH N. Cruz, DH
5. J. Martinez, LF S. Pearce, 1B
6. A. Avila, C J. Hardy, SS

He has swung through so many fastballs down the middle this year. Though, of course I can excuse him, since he has been dealing with the concussions. Honestly, I am concerned about possible long-term symptoms for him at this point.

Already 44 after two innings. If we can keep up the pressure he'll be tapped by the 5th inning. Max needs an efficient 2nd - he only had 10 pitches in the 1st, in spite of the home run.

Why did they call for Hunter to bunt on the first pitch with two out? You would think that they would try to make Tillman pitch to him, at least.

What I am wondering, is what happened to the approach that Kinsler took in the first half of the season? He is back to being the pull happy guy he was in Texas. Not being willing to go the other way is the reason his average plummeted in the second half.

Early in the bat if you get a good pitch to hit, like JD got, than go ahead and swing away. Otherwise, layoff for a better pitch to hit. Is it very much possible to be able to straddle that fine line.

Also Victor's HR was on 2-2 count, not early in the count.

You are right, though in a sense. The Tigers are what they are at this point, problem is that over-agressiveness might end up being their undoing.

If Scherzer can keep it up, you just know these guys are going to blow up. Almost got there last inning. Tillman's at 105 pitches, see if they keep him in.
