OT: Tigers acquire Jeff Baker: So long, Raburn?

Submitted by Phil Brickma on

The Tigers announced a trade early this afternoon. They have acquired utilityman Jeff Baker from the Cubs for two players to be named later. Baker is Don Kelly with better numbers. Notably, as a righty, he hits lefties at a career .304 clip.

I assume this means Raburn's days in Detroit are numbered. Most Tigers fans have been waiting for this move for a while.

What is the point of the July 31 "trade deadline" if you can make trades after that date?  I know  players now have to clear waivers, but it just seems silly that the July 31 date gets hyped up and then trades invariably happen afterwards.

I look at clearing waivers as basically being "we'll drop this guy if you want him, but you need to give us some prospects in the future."

I don't know all the technicalities of it, but it seems like it is not really a standard trade, per se, thus the whole adherence to the trade deadline as being what really matters.

After July31st, teams can still trade, however, the players must clear “waivers” first. They are put on the waiver wire and any team can make a claim for them, (claims are processed in a preferential order, lowest won-loss record has highest priority and also same league.) Team can then remove player from waivers, work with team making claim for some sort of trade, or just let them go (salary, contract and all). Many times teams will push a majority of their players through waivers right now in hopes that nobody claims them and they can then make a trade. (Or a player with a unwieldy contract in hopes someone takes them and the contract off their hands.)

Its a simplistic version but I hope it helps.

To be fair, Raburn might have a little more time with the club because he is on the DL right now. Danny Worth, I assume, would get sent back to Toledo following today's trade. But I think Raburn doesn't have a spot on the club when he is healthy.

Certainly looks as if Raburn no longer has a spot, should be interesting who they send down in the bullpen when Al-Al comes back. As always Joe West still sucks.

For those who haven't looked at his career stats, the link is here.

I like this - we get someone who can come of the bench and be effective as a role player on a consistent basis. He's .270 career hitter with a .757 OPS, which on both accounts is an upgrade from Raburn. Baker is a defensive upgrade as well, which will certainly be comforting for someone who might see spot duty as a replacement as well.

As a Cubs fan this move may get overvalued. Yes Baker can hit Lefties but he is NOT a full time starter and will platoon or his value will decrease. It is a good get however as long as the Tigers use him right

Also on another note I wish it was Soriano traded to the Tigers instead of Baker as Sori would have netted a better return.

Have to hope this means that Boesch and DY can platoon at DH and that QB and JB can platoon at LF. Give Dirks RF and i'll be happy.

there was a left hander starting for Cleveland. Delmon has hit left handers sigficantly better than Boesch this season. Delmon is hitting left handers at a .291 clip with good power, Boesch has hit .238 against lefties with no power. Perfect example of people coming up with dumb reasons to trash Leyland, when he made the correct decision according to the splits and matchup.

Not to mention, last I checked Delmon has better numbers than Boesch overall, and that experiment your refering to literally consists of a two game sample size.

able to predict the future now? He made the correct decision based on the splits and matchup, just because it didn't work out in retrospect doesn't mean it was the incorrect decision. That's baseball, you play the matchups, sometimes they work in your favor other times they don't. I swear Leyland can't win with some fans. Like I have said before there are times where I don't agree with Leyland, but the crap that some people come up that doesn't even make sense is really unbeliavable. I remember a thread last year where somebody was complaining about Leyland, saying the Tigers never bunt. As it turned out the Tigers were 3rd of 4th in AL in sacrifice bunts when the poster made that comment. Different year, same dumb shit.

And what exactly did Boesch do today? Oh that's right, 0-4 as well. Your right though, flipping them would of made a huge difference.

To be fair Leyland wasn't in the game to decide if Dirks should pinch hit for QB, and there was a lefty on the mound to start the game so Delmon hitting 5th isn't a bad idea. Tigers pitched just poorly enough to lose this one, whether it was Max, or Benoit.

I'm not gonna trash Leyland today, but to say that he was ejected means he isn't making decisions is hooey. To say that decision isn't his seems a bit apologetic for him. He was right there in clubhouse or tunnel watching game and easily could let his decisions be known.

out. Seriously, everytime there is a thread and the Tigers lose there are always a couple of doom and gloom posts making one loss more sigficant than it actually is. It's baseball, crap happens. The White Sox are hardly sitting comfortably with the slim lead they in the division.  They still only have a 2.5 game lead after today, that kind of lead can disappear very quickly.

Chicago is playing well now, but the season still has some distance to go and I'm not 100% sold that they can keep it going.  This is also a team that was swept by the Tigers the last time they met.  Detroit won't run away with the division like last year, but this Sox team isn't loaded and could definitely hit a rough patch.

Miggy is just awesome. Has to be the best overall hitter in baseball. Can’t believe ESPN rated Kemp over Miggy as top in MLB. LA can have Kemp; I’ll keep Cabrera.
