OT-Tigers 7/1 vs Seattle

Submitted by david from wyoming on

Tigers vs Mariners. Max Scherzer's beautiful eyes vs some dude named Fister. Discuss

Max has given up an early solo home run. Tigers down 0-1 at the bottom of the 2nd.

Fister is a pitch to contact guy that doesn't miss a whole lot of bats. His success this season is a reflection of the Mariners defense and Safeco effect. This is also only his second start since coming off the DL. This is a good game for the Tigers to win going into the weekend. The next two games are a lot more winnable than Sunday when they will face Cliff Lee who has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball even though he missed the first month.

Okay, I gotta second-guess Leyland here. 7-1, top 9. This is the perfect time to get Schlereth's feet wet in a low-stress situation. Instead he goes and gets another lefty in Phil Coke.

Piss-poor baserunning by Figgins there to get doubled off of first, especially with Ichiro on 2nd, and when you're down by 6 runs, no less. .

I'm with this.  The big inning calls for conservative baserunning.  If they were down by 2 or even 3, you go for it.  Down by 6, your run isn't so important to risk the out.  Should've been 2/3 of the way to second and stopped there.

Still, it took two really terrific throws to get him.  Boesch and Santiago both, helluva job.

With his speed, he shouldn't have been any further than 3/4 of the way to 2B, with Ichiro on 2nd. If that ball drops, he's got enough wheels to do no worse than make it a play at the plate.

This is why I like Rod Allen: he does things all the time like he did tonight.  "If Coke wants to finish it here, he'll throw a changeup like he just threw a couple pitches ago."  Changeup, strike three, end of game.  The man is a total goofball but he's got one of the best baseball minds there is.
