OT - Talking Cars Tuesday - Summer Car

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So, last week I asked about Fun, this week let's discuss your IDEAL Summer car. Don't say "a convertible". Tell me which one and why. Tell me if you want a summer cruiser, a canyon carver, a motorcycle, the perfect road trip van... what is it for you?

...great alternative to a full-on RV.  An AWD version of the VW Westfalia, complete with all of the cool camping options & trimmings.  The perfect vehicle to hit the Summer Music Festivals and National Parks.

My vehicle ownership history is pretty boring. When I was a teenager I bought a 93 Chysler LeBaron drop top for $2000. It was fun for a few months but a complete piece of crap. It blew large clouds of smoke out of the exhaust, so sometimes when you stopped it would come pooring in and completely ruin the experience. Not to mention I was that guy blowing large clouds of smoke into the car behind me. I grew to hate that car, but for a couple of months it was fun so I guess it qualifies.

You'll be happy with my answer Ben - a Wrangler, no top, no doors, with a sound bar. I'm not super picky about the year, I've owned two of them, a 91 and a 2012. I actually liked the '91 better. Great car to take to the beach, but pack sweatshirts for the drive home.

'91 with the "Sport" bar? or the "Family" bar? My 91 had the Sport bar AKA the "youre dead if you're in the back during a roll over" bar. Luckily, never rolled it. Between my 2 I'd take the '98. The 4.0L had a lot more punch than the 2.5L in my 91.

always seemed to have more interior room to me, for some reason, than either the KJ or TJ. I don't know if that's an optical illusion or not, but I felt more comfortable in them.

The TJ and YJ share a frame & tub, so there isn't actually more volume... but the YJ had a lot less stuff in it. The TJ added things like "airbags", "vents", and a "center console" that took up lots of the volume.

Mine had the family bar, but I didn't know that nomenclature. I had a 4.0 in my '91 and it was a great running engine. Awesome summer car, also did killer donuts in the winter.

Can Am Spyder looks like a fun ride.  I'd love a motorcycle, but having a prosthetic leg, balance is an issue for me, so having the 3-wheel option would be more stable and safer, while still having the bike experience.

Would love to ride around on one of those...

Especially if I could get it custom painted in UM colors

Porsche boxster or 911 spyder. A close second would be the new mazda mx-5 targa top. It's gorgeous and much more "approachable" than a Porsche. I'd be more inclined to work on it, mod it, and drive it like hell.

I don't know about the new models but everything was pretty basic on the ones I had.  The engine and trans were simple and tough and were obviously designed to handle a lot more power than the car produced (140 in the 99 IIRC).  I'm not sure how well they hold up when you add a turbo and a bunch of mods, but left mostly stock you can beat them for years while doing only basic maintenance.

1) Miata. I own one, so it automatically goes to the top because its possible.

2) Mustang GT Convertible. Cuz Torque.

3) Jeep Wrangler. Top and doors off.

4) Camaro Convertible. I actually hate the hard top camaro. I don't like the idea of the horrible green house. But the convertible is nice.

5) Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, 70's version. Cruise monster.

I've never driven oen so it coudl be total shit but an aerial atom. I think that would be such an awesome summer car. That or a dune buggy and then go ride some sand waves.

Considering the owner of my company recently purchased a 2016 Maserati convertible, I kind of want one of those.

The ideal summer car for me is the one I stand to inherit at some point in my life - a 1968 Firebird. As it is, my father will allow its use at strategic points in the summer, and I've taken it to some of the weekend shows like Ford Lake, the Downriver Cruise and some of the smaller ones. It's actually kind of fun to just drive around the subdivision too on a nice afternoon.

Although it is an unpopular event with a lot of locals, I do admit to having at least trolled the Dream Cruise in it once or twice, once with my son in the car, who thought it was odd that cars were so large and noisy at one point in history.

Now that I live in western Oregon and can enjoy the absolutely beautiful summers and mountain roads, it's gotta be the Atom 3S. Weighs nothing, tons of power, fully open cockpit... now I just need $100k of disposable cash.

My favorite summer ride would be my current ride, a 1966 Ford Mustang. 5.0L 302 HO engine with all original interior "deluxe" upgrades. The only thing that would make it better suited to summer would be if it was a convertible. And it can now be YOURS because it's FOR SALE.
