OT: Talking "Cars" Tuesday

Submitted by Hab on October 26th, 2021 at 3:10 PM

With apologies in advance to Jeepin' Ben, I came across something that I thought could serve as a convenient break from Hate Week (tm), QB controversies, and whether this team is good enough to hang with/beat OSU.

Japan startup ALI Technologies is rolling out it's version of a hoverbike.  This struck a chord with me as I recall way back when, as a child in elementary school, we were given an assignment to try and predict where the car industry would go 20 years in the future.  Granted, we're farther out than 20 years, but I distinctly recall a number of ideas taking the form of the hovering/flying cars.  And while it's not quite to Judge Dredd levels, I was particularly interested in the idea that it could be purposed for public service operations like search and rescue.  Also impressed that the price point for something like this has been "reduced" to that of a supercar.

It looks like a really expensive four-piece food processor. Someone rich and drunk will inevitably do something stupid, slip, and fall into a rotor housing. Knowing that inevitable outcome, I kind of want to see someone toss a set of cabbages through each rotor at the same time so I have a mental picture ready when the news breaks.

This is cool!

Side note: Is there a way to get a GM family discount, if you dont have family who worked for GM? There seems to be ZERO negotiating with dealerships now (and I assume thats the future of car buying)...and that extra 5k off would be nice.

So it basically looks like a dual rotor drone type 'drive train' (fly train?).

It's... interesting. I don't know it's going to change the industry though, anymore than a hovercraft would.

For my own part, I always wanted something like a Hammers Slammers tank.

eVTOLS are the future of transportation.  Imagine being able to fly around like Star Lord for the price of a normal vehicle.  I only hope to live long enough to own one.

My current car is in great shape and is fun to drive, but takes premium gas. For me, progress looks like:

  • Next car is fully electric and I can still take road trips across the country without any loss of convenience (getting real close!)
  • Car after that drives me almost all the time (on the horizon)

After that, no idea, but I wouldn't mind something that doesn't care about potholes on these Michigan roads.
