OT: Starcraft II at midnight?

Submitted by Purkinje on

Bah, why do I have to be so poor? Hopefully someone here is getting it later tonight so I can live vicariously through you until I get paid on Friday.

Good I'm glad you started this thread--I was just going to.  Unlucky to not get the game tonight mate.  I'll be leaving shortly!! I'll post a UFR after the first hour.  Was wondering if anyone else is getting it? And if they were up for a game?

I'm not a fan of camping out at Gamestop until Midnight, so I'll probably end up getting it tomorrow morning/afternoon.

However, the folks at teamliquid.net are doing a launch-cast from now until midnight:

Probably worth a watch if you're into seeing some gameplay before you have a copy of your own.

Since you're not getting the game to friday, you can usually find 10-20 people streaming Starcraft 2 games on this website (look on the right of the webpage in the "user stream" section).  There were lots of streamers during the beta and probably many many more upon launch.

A quick and easy way to get your Starcraft 2 fix while you wait for that paycheck =)

I guess without giving a massive rundown of the entire game, here are some really quick tips:

1) Always always scout, with whatever you can.  Knowing if the other guy is teching to air or rushing with mass tier 1 units is the difference between a win and  a loss.

2)  Play agressive:  as a noob it's easy to just try and sit back and build up defenses, but that's the easiest way to lose.  Always try to keep a very mobile army and poke around the enemy, looking for places to harass, attack, or do air drops.

3) Expand.  If you ever have >400 minerals that you don't have an immediate use for, go build a nexus/hatchery/command center.

4) Saturate your harvesters.  Always try and have ~2.3 workers per mineral field.

5) Don't play zerg.  They're really hard to learn as a noob, either protoss or terran are better for a beginner.

I was so excited when I got my beta key but it turns out my laptop is too old/slow to run it.  I have a 6 year old dell inspiron 9300 that has been an absolute champ but it just can't cut it for SC2.  I keep telling myself that I need to get a new PC but until this one dies I don't think that's going to happen.  I'm flying back to Michigan for UConn, MSU, and the Big Chill so I'd rather save my money for those trips.

But if anyone has a suggestion on a cheap mid-grade gaming desktop I would definitely consider it.   Plus I'm still a glutton for punishment at the hands of an 11 year old Korean kid.

Check Newegg. If you've got a friend that can help you assemble one, you can build a very powerful PC for under a grand (built mine two summers ago, still top of the line, cost about 1k). If you don't have someone that can help you build one, the site also has prebuilt gaming PCs from offbrand companies, they pretty much buy the parts, assemble them, then resell them slightly marked up, for still very cheap. iBUYPOWER is the company I know of offhand, and while they sound really sketchy, I helped a friend of mine buy one of those about a year and a half ago, and it still runs great, with no issues at all (and only cost him 600$, all peripherals included.

Also, the best part about a desktop is, if something does go wrong, you can just fix/replace the bad part instead of the whole machine.

Has anyone with a Mac tried the beta? I have 2 year old macbook pro with only 2 GB RAM - Is that going to be enough to run the game?  I hear it runs a lot slower on macs...

He's one of those close minded people that can't imagine balancing your personal time with everyones social life.  During the week I work, I experienced all the debacle of college, on the wkends most of us still probably party or go out with friends..  sound more like a dumbass.

Have you guys tried to enable the death ray 6000 in that game? You have to push the button that says "What the hell is wrong with you geeks"

i thought you were trying to get a bunch of people online to get a game together at midnight.  Reminds me of college when guys would go to NUBS and (after NUBS closed) to north campus at midnight to play starcraft (you know, the first one).  Before that, it was Doom II at UGLi until 4:30am when they closed the computer lab.  I played a little Doom (where I learned the term "frag"), but never got into Warcraft, Diablo, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, etc.

as expected, of course. I am going to play through the single player before I hop online, because... well, I don't know why. However, I am also probably going to bump up the difficulty level, because it's been a little too easy.
