I'm pretty certain that one Jim Harbaugh has plenty of obsession on this thing (and every other game).

FWIW, I don't think the players lost recent games to MSU due to not "obsessing" enough, nor our fans not "obsessing" enough. This sort of meme falls into the whole "our players are entitled" under Hoke meme, or "Sparty wants it more" meme etc.

Bottom line, the team lost because they were outcoached, outschemed and out exectuted. None of this was because they didn't take it "seriously" enough. If anything, wasn't Hoke celebrated for "understanding" the rivalries?

Good grief.  He understands very little about boxing then and is showing his pure ignorance and misdirected pride by daring to open up his mouth about it.  There are a lot of sports where you can can argue about advances in training and techniques making present athletes superior to past ones.  Boxing, however, is an art and a science, not a mere physical sport.  Only an uneducated moron would dare say the 50th ranked heavyweight (or even a top 10 one) today would have a snowflake's chance in hell against Cassius.

I think that statement of his is much more telling about the kind of person he is than the immature nonsense he was spewing in that other thread.

If he gets hurt like Gurley or Lattimore did this will not be a smart decision. There is no real benefit to staying with 1st round draft pick salaries so much lower.  Players now need to get the clock started on there rookie deal before they get to there first big money contract.

If you are a guaranteed first rounder, I agree. But he is not. And once you start falling bad things happen. If you are a third rounder and have a rough camp a team is much more likely to cut you. Plus, the average NFL player does not make it out of his rookie contract. He is much smarter to stay and turn himself into a high first rounder.

He had a pretty mediocre year so no surprise.. He disappeared in a lot of games. Didn't he finish with like 6 sacks or so?

Same for Calhoun as last year. And MSU had 10 more as a team this year (42) than last (32). So it's hard to call his year mediocre - he was certainly getting more attention and double teams which opened up defensive opportunities elsewhere.

And I think we would agree the touchdowns he scored last year were lucky, if we can also agree that lucky DEs are those who spend a lot of time hugging quarterbacks...

Sometimes sacks can be manufactured by the DC. Can't look at sack numbers and say he's a good player. Need to see pressure numbers like QB hurries, QB hits, sacks, etc. They're a much better indicator of how good of a pass rusher you are as opposed to focusing on sack numbers.

For example, I rather have DL who pressure the QB 40% of the time with low sack numbers than DL with high sack numbers but with low pressure numbers like 10%.

He was a captain this year for them. He also has 3-1/2 sacks vs us the last 2 games. Has been a monster vs us. Wish he would have left, he's a guy you have to account for on their defense.

He'll got by the 2nd round - guys with those skills and size are not common, and look across the NFL and you'll see LOTS of guys with way worse "personalities" than Funchess being injured and then playing uninspired football as the rest of the team crumbled.

People around here love to shit on players on the way out because, I don't know, it's easy to and because they'll never have to actually say it to the guy's face it feels safe.  Funchess had a mediocre final year and he absolutely looked disinterested at times, but given how bad the QB position was, how poorly coached the team looked at times, the constant beatings and embarassments, the injuries, everything, I'm not surprised he doesn't want to come back and would rather pursue his NFL dreams.
