OT: SEC Shorts - Tennessee fans enjoy college football again

I know, I know, we shouldn't post these every week, but I feel like this one is relevant as this was basically Michigan fans last year.  Enjoy!

I’ll be that guy…

”Yeah, but…”

This is a team that needed OT to beat Pitt’s backup QB earlier this season. They’re 6th because they’re undefeated and they beat an overhyped Florida Gators team that’s looked bad in some losses and even worse in some wins.

Don’t get me wrong; I’ll be rooting for them to beat Alabama, but I think this is yet another example of the seemingly unstoppable SEC Hype Train.

I won't be rooting for them to beat 'Bama. Tennessee is one of the more unlikeable programs in the SEC (and that's saying a lot). The fact that they've sucked so much for so long doesn't make them any less unlikeable.

'Bama is one of the more likeable programs in the SEC (which admittedly isn't saying much). The fact that they've been so good for so long doesn't make them any less likeable.

Also, I don't think this game has any bearing on Michigan's fortunes. Yes, it would be nice to move up in the rankings, but at the end of the day, if we run the table, beat OSU, and win the B1G, we'll get into the CFP.

They have a better resume than we do. They look really good. Their wins over Florida and Pitt (both 4-2 and, unlike Iowa, have real pulses) and LSU are as good as or better than any of ours.

Might not be good enough to beat Bama, and I'd like to think we're a step above them, but let's not pretend that they are total frauds.

Question: When will the Detroit Lion's fans enjoy professional football again? The last NFL championship was 65 years ago in 1957 and they have won just ONE playoff game since then in 1991!

To answer your question in a non-specific way, "Never", as long as the team remains under Ford family ownership. They demonstrate an inability to select, managers, coaches, scouts, players, etc., that are able to win. I believe they have only drafted four players since 1965 who have made the Hall of Fame as Lions. The Steelers had four in the 1974 draft alone. At least because of my age, I was able to enjoy three championships.

Funny.  My wife and I were in New Mexico this past week and I watched the Indiana game in Las Cruces at a sports bar.  The person sitting next to me was a Tennessee fan there for the LSU game who was very happy about their revival.

Speaking of worthless babbling, I have a general dislike for SEC teams, but there is a hierarchy:

1.  I frigging HATE Tennessee.  They and Auburn are the cheatingest mofos in a conference that turned cheating into an art form.  Also, see Woodson, Charles; Heisman

2.  Auburn.  Dysfunctional cheating dumpster fire.  Raging case of Little Brother syndrome.

3.  Texas A&M.  Little brother with a money printing machine.   Gotta love how all that money and all that cheating never get them anywhere.    Plus, the place is just f'ing weird.

4.  LSU.  See Kelly, Brian.

5.  Florida.  Meyer, Urban, and Mullen, Dan.

6.  Ole Miss.  Kiffin, Lane.

7.  Kentucky.  The hatred here is pretty much 100% basketball related.  I actually kinda like Mark Stoops and think he's done a great job and seems like a coach I wouldn't mind my kid playing for.

8.  UGA.  UGA doesn't really bother me.  Except a couple of drunk fans had a lot to say walking out of Hard Rock after the Orange Bowl.  If I was forced, gun to my head, to attend an SEC school, I'd pick UGA.

9.  Bama.  Just never been able to muster much hate for them.  Plus their fans were really cool to my son and me at Jerryworld in Brady Hoke's second season.

10.  Miss. St.  I sometimes forget they exist.

11.  S. Carolina.  Same.

12.  Vandy.   Why would anyone hate Vandy?

From a Michigan perspective, Tennessee is the obvious #1.

The whining about Woodson's Heisman and their subsequent bowl game "performance" against Nebraska (the only argument against it being an intentional tank job is that the Manning led Vol's blew virtually every other big game they played also) are more than enough to guarantee the top slot.  If you need an additional data point, anyone who attended the 2002 Citrus Bowl is still haunted by their annoying fucking fanbase and that god damn song.

Dale Carter was awesome and Chuck Webb was one of the best running backs and great what if's of the 1990's but otherwise I can't stand that program.

A Tennessee win on Saturday would be fine with me.  I'm certainly not a Vols fan by any means; however, seeing Bama with a nick on their W-L record would be more than fine with me.

The comments about TN "being creative with securing recruits" prior to NIL, is something I completely agree with - as well as some history including the Heisman or end of season polls.

I do think it's the mentality in that part of the country which is - nothing else matters except SEC football.  And, SEC football is the only football in the country, and the top four SEC teams should be in the CFP.

Tennesse has a chance to beat Bama if Milroe has to start again.  Bama without Young is a quite different animal, still exceptionally tough to beat but very different.

Speaking of Bama, the Tide have a pretty tough 4 game stretch here (Tenn, Miss St, LSU, Ole Miss), would not be surprised to see them drop one.  Both Texas and A&M could/should have beaten them.
