OT: RIP Joan Rivers

A major loss to the comedy family.  Condolences to her family.

Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller broke open the old boys club of stand-up comedy for women. RIP.

I was not a fan, especially during these last few years, when it seemed to me that her public comments were more vicious than funny. But I've heard repeatedly that she was a different, kinder, and more compassionate person off stage, and I can believe that.

I met her once, several years ago, when she was the guest speaker at a luncheon that my company held. She and her entourage sailed into the reception room, and as they passed me she stopped, pointed a skinny finger up into my chest and blared, "Oh - I LOVE that tie!"

I managed to mumble "Thank you, Miss Rivers" as she sailed on. I was pleasantly shocked by the fact that, in a room full of corporate high rollers, she noticed a nobody like me.

I also wondered if I should tell her that the tie cost me $5 at Target, but I decided to keep that nugget to myself.

Thanks, Joan. Rest in peace.

Probably gonna get heat for saying this but its hard for me to feel bad for her after some of the comments she made regarding something that can't be discussed here. I'll leave it at that.

and Jack Nicholson were too people I had to grow up before I could appreciate, since they had become caricatures by the time I was young. It doesn't feel like that long ago that I found out she was a comedian. RIP, and we'll miss a very funny person.

She is outrageuosly funny and created an entirely new genre of female comedians who would be as obsecene as men and get away with it.

I cannot think of any contemporary female comedian who has had such an impact as Joan.............being buried in a Valentino gown.

She could be a harsh critic, but I never heard her utter an unkind word about Michigan football.  RIP.

I disliked her growing up until about 5 years ago when I learned her actual past. I truly thought (for 25 years) that she was just some horrid fashion hag. Then, I realized she was a comedian and a pretty ahead I'd get time comedian (especially for women). Then, I noticed her in more things the last few years where she was very funny. Very self deprecating, etc. She was awesome on Louie. I actually grew to respect her. It's sad whenever someone passes but I won't pretend I knew her, etc. Bad news, for sure. Just odd that 5 years ago this wouldn't have made me think much at all. I'd wouldn't have even replied. Now, it's a solid RIP and sorry to the family.

This is a sports blog?  Less than a week ago people ragged on someone who created a thread about buying tickets.  And that post was arguably on topic.  This is not even close.  I was saddened to hear of Robin Williams' passing, but didn't look for news about it here.

I knew there would be a few people who would show up to give me the downvote.  Let me be a little more clear.  This is a sports blog.  Joan Rivers' death has no relevance here, the mods should have deleted the thread because her racist political rants are beyond offensive and logging into MGoBlog should be about Michigan sports, not about celebrities who got rich being hateful.  What brings us together is Michigan.  Joan Rivers was a divisive personality, again with no relevance to the board, and her passing can be discussed elsewhere.
