OT: Olga's Kitchen files for Bankruptcy
For us locals/people from the Detroit suburbs, Olga's is a local favorite and some would argue they're every bit as much a part of the local food tapestry as Lafayette/National Coney Dogs, Joe Muer's etc. Its Chapter 11 so they still may have a chance but sad to see.

Their orange shake drink is also quite good.
I love Olga's bread. I was introduced to it as a student in A2 in the '80s. I eventually moved to DC and was excited to find one in the area. But it eventually closed and I was in mourning. I make it a point to eat there everytime I'm in Michigan. I stiil think it would do better in a food court than as a formal sit-down restaurant.
Now I'm hungry.
Gyro, fries and a drink for like $8. I like a good, greasy gyro too, but theirs wasn't heavy and almost felt healthy.
Hope they can pull out of it
be devastated.
Personally, I'm not a fan. There are way too many good Greek places around town to be eating at a mediocre chain.
To me Olga's is BARELY greek. Olga's is its own spin off of greek food that is really centered around their bread which makes pita bread seem like cardboard in comparison.
It's also one of the extremely few places where my kids will eat.
that their bread is good. Also those orange smoothies they have there.
I feel your pain though. Both of my kids are picky eaters.
She loves Olga's and we usually had lunch at the restaurant on Plymouth Road at least once or twice each football season. Not a bad bite before a 3:30pm kickoff. The Olga's that used to be on N. State Street was a "go to" place for decent eats back in our student days.
Seriously?! That's terrible. I mean, I haven't had Olga's in like 8 years because I live out of state, but man, that was one of my aboslute favorite places when I was growing up. Especially liked the snackers, and the greek dressing, and those orange cream coolers were one of my childhood favorites. Really sad.
Damn, I really hope they're able to save the business. Nothing beats snackers and an orange cream cooler.
Ah, the childhood memories from their location in the old Franklin Park (now Westfield) mall in Toledo. Used to love a classic Olga with a lemonade after swim practice.
Haven't been to one in years but hate to see local businesses disappear.
Did you know the Loizons?
Bummer. My first date was Olga's and then roller skating. My mom drove us.
Used to be on the corner of State and Washington across from North Quad, which to old timers was the Frieze building and to really old timers Ann Arbor High and the Public Library. At that time it was pretty different as there was not a Coney Island on every corner.
Though I've been to one of the north Detroit suburbs locations.
Also, Omega Pizza.
That's Olga's I remember! I had a class in the Frieze building and I would often catch lunch at Olga's. It was tasty and fit the budget.
No Olga's in Colorado so I haven't had the pleasure in about 30 years.

Remember having that smell on me and never went back (also agree with poster above noting the many better Greek options). Olga herself was kindof a B.
I'd imagine this is just to clear some debts and there is no real risk of the company going under.
Still though, it's not like Olga's is so great that I'd notice it gone. It's just average food.
I still enjoy the odd stop at an Olga's - the one in Canton is the closest one to me - but I will say that a few of the ones that were in malls in Metro Detroit were shutting down rapidly, I noticed, so I wondered if something was up. I suppose this is what's up. Hopefully they can reorganize and pull it out somehow. Olga Bread is great and my inner kid has a soft spot for their version of a burger - Super Cheese highly recommended.
There was an Olga's in a tiny little stand alone building right in the State and Washington area that I used to eat at about twice a week (early-mid 90's). It replaced an old A2 institution, Gino's Burgers.
The Olga's went out of business while I was still in school and was replaced by a bunch of places that never quite caught on. I think B-Dubs is built on that spot now.
Whenever I see (or think of) Olga's I think of that little one that I used to visit on my way to the Frieze Building (which was the old Ann Arbor high school). North Quad is built there now.
**edit* I must have been writing this while Bringthewood was writing his. Same memories!

Olga's bankruptcy needs to file for kitchen.
Olga bread is pretty easy to make. One of the Detroit newspapers ran the recipe years ago, and it came out spot-on. Which was great, because at the time I could not afford to eat at Olga's very often (cheap as it was).
A Google search turned up several sources for it, so if the main draw was their bread (it was for me), it's one of the relatively rare items you can replicate at home.
Will it turn out better than the time I used a newspaper recipe for peet-sa?

Back slowly away from the oven, sir. Back up now - nobody needs to get hurt. PUT THAT OVEN MITT DOWN!
(Jeebus, JGoBlue - that looks like a scene from Alien. Although with a little work you could salvage the ham and cheese, and make yourself a sandwich or something.)
The story horrified me enough that I felt compelled to share (not my story or recreation, thankfully, just linking the SFGate writer).
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
No joke, this was my brother's and my favorite place to meet and have a quick meal back in GR. Quick, cheap and fairly tasty, especially the Snackers. I used to go to the Woodland Mall one fairly often.
Hope someone can save them.

I mean, it's not like Potbelly's cheap or something. It's a sit down restaurant. You can do it for about $25 for two people.

However, I have decided to open a new restaurant. It will be called "Helga's". It will feature a "Helga", which is a bit like a gyro, but better. Also we will have orange smoothies and Helga bread. I will keep you updated as to our locations.

Like was said above, way too many good Greek spots to ever find yourself at Olga's.
Damn, I loved Olgas.
The bread was awesome. Couldn't afford to go to the one next to Frieze back in the day. Worked at the Olga's in Woodland Mall in GR for about 2.5 weeks. They watched the leftover "mistakes" way to close for me to see the value in long-term employment there.
Leftover mistakes???? What means you?
I use to LOVE going to the Parthenon, corner of Main & Liberty, and their gyros meat/sandwiches were out of this world - or as MGoBloggers would say the Alsion Brie of Gyros! I would not eat gyros anywhere else, but since they closed, I was going thru serious gyros deprivation.
I tried the Olgas for the first time in like 25 years, and it wasn't bad. It did not make me forget Parthenon, but did the trick. So if they shut down, for those of us who live in/around Ann Arbor, what are the good Greek restaurants still here - It is Greek to me?
My son like Ahmo's and I think it is okay for fast Greek. There is one in the Union and one at Division and Huron. Mezes on North U seems to have good reviews but I've never been there.
I have tried Ahmos at two of their locations, and I still think Olgas is better.
