For all the homerism around here, it's hard to deny that Meyer hasn't punished fairly and consistently. Looks like he doesn't want to have another Florida on his hands. Credit where it's due.

That scene from "Clue" probably does paraphrase a conversation held at least once per week in Gene Smith's office during the latter days of the Tressel years. Eerily accurate indeed. Also this one from earlier in the film:

"Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"

"You don't need any help from me, sir."

"THAT'S RIGHT!"

His "break" to spend time with his family coincided with Tebow graduating and Florida sucking. He is a great coach, no denying that, but I think he is slimy as crap.

Since Urban has been at OSU, he used the university's plane to fly to every one of his daugther's volleyball match, and regularly attends his son's high school baseball and football games. Shelley Meyer also commented that they take a 1-2 week long family vacation every offseason now, which is something they never did while Urban was at Utah or Florida.

Are you suggesting that Urban Meyer's use of a University owned plane to travel to personal events is a positive thing?

Even if he has the contractual right to use University property for private purposes, it seems a little shady. The dude has enough zeros in his salary to be able to afford a first class commercial ticket or even a private charter.

Galavanting around the country for recruiting purposes is one thing. That provides a tangible benefit to the Team and the University. If you want to write off use of the University jet or put the ticket on the expense account it would only be right. But he should not be allowed to do that for personal trips.

As much as I hate the guy, I think it's great that he takes personal trips. I don't want to see him work himself to death, or ruin his kids' lives. But he has the money to foot the bill for himself. Don't hang the expense on buckeye nation, the students, or the taxpayers.

The amount of time you save with a private or chartered plane is massive compared to commercial. (Have only had the chance once or twice with clients). I would guess the reduced time away by Urban is a net benefit in OSUs eyes -- same with the satellite tour by JH and staff this summer.

Plus it's not what you are worth - it's what you can negotiate.

I agree on the satellite camps issue. I think of that as recruiting, thus university business.

Not on board with personl trips, though. I think I'd feel better about it if there was just a contractual clause that grants a stipend of a stipulated value for personal travel expenses that is sufficient to charter private planes throughout the season. Having unfettered access to a university-owned jet just seems like too much, to me.

Maybe I'm just being polyannaish about monetary issues. If you aren't willing to shell out coin and fringe benefits you get stuck with Brady Hoke tier coaching... or something. I just see glaring reminders over and over again of the excess and big business of sports and am flabbergasted.

I'm suggesting that Urban has kept his promise to his family to take more personal time away from football. I'm sure when Urban has more time to spare (aka when he isn't coaching or peak recruiting season), he takes a commerical flight, but during the season when his schedule is packed down to the minute he takes the private jet.

Shelley Meyer said that Urban was a perfectionist when he was at Utah and Florida, and insisted on being involved with every detail. So part of the "family contract" that Urban's family drew up before he accepted the OSU job was that he would stop micromanaging and trust his assistant coaches to do their job. That is also a reason why Urban has tried to have dual coordinators on both sides of the ball, so he would shift more responsibilities off himself.

That's cool and all. I'm just saying. The contracts of public officials are published as public records for a reason. I haven't read Meyer's contract. So I don't know what it says. I just think compensation packages should be specifically spelled out in the wording of the contract to avoid abuse. If use of the private jet within some predetermined limit is stipulated than there is no problem. If the university just gives him the keys and a pilot without any oversight, that would be a serious issue.

To be fair, he hasn't done a whole lot at OSU that would say he's continued his slimeball ways.

He's been pretty consistent with punishment. Not sure how much that has to do with Meyer "turning over a new leaf" or OSU telling him they won't put up with the shit he got away with at UF, but either way, he's been pretty clean by all accounts since he took over at OSU.

like someone already said.

HOWEVAH...we'll see if it sticks.  I won't take anything at face value when it comes to that man.  I wonder if some "new evidence" pops up between now and their game.

I think that's it for him isn't it. I think he's out of eligibility.

Little side note.....according to Ourlads.com, if the presumed underclass Buckeyes who would go in the first two rounds do in fact leave (those being Michael Thomas, Ezekiel Elliott, Eli Apple, Vonn Bell and Joey Bosa) Ohio State will lose 7 starters on offense and 6 on defense. That's quite a bit to handle. I know Ohio just reloads but thats a lot to lose.

There's 10 senior starters on the team currently: Miller, Vannett, Decker, Boren, Farris, Washington, Schutt, Perry, Haynes and Willoughby

Plus, 8 underclassmen that could declare early: Bosa, Elliott, Thomas, Lee, Bell, Apple, Elflein, and Jones

Depending on how you define "starters" (Willoughby and Jones both started for the majority of the season)... That's 16-18 potential starters gone after this season.

OSU will be hurting on the OL in particular with 3 seniors leaving (Decker, Boren and Farris), and potentially Elflein as well who is their 2nd best OL.

?

Let's see, one endangers the lives of you and everyone around you.....the other is just a dude trying to avoid having to pay for dinner first.

For the record, I thought Fitz deserved more than one game too.

This comment made me laugh. I agree with the premise that drunk driving (or drink-driving as they say in the UK) is worse for society. On the second part what you're really saying is that he didn't want to waste time on dinner conversation. Unless dinner costs more than a Columbus-area ho...okay, nevermind, carry on.

Lastly, I read his apology statement. A little redundant (so much sincerity!), but one of the best written athlete communications I've seen recently.
