This just dropped on NFL.com. sorry I couldn't grab a link. He was their WR coach.

Dude was the coach of one of the worst WR corps in the league with Brady as QB. That’s no bueno. Granted talent was thin there without AB and just Edelman and a rookie Harry.

Giants hired him to compete with Ron Rivera, Mike McCarthy and Doug Pederson.

This is after they declined to fly out and interview Rhule when Rhule even called them and asked if they would match Carolinas offer.

Can’t make this shit up lol.

Joe Judge has been the Pats' outstanding ST assistant and coordinator since 2012. He was the St coordinator/WR coach only this season. He had no prior experience coaching WRs, so it's not a big surprise he didn't do great there. Pats special teams were still among the best in the league.

This sadly is true.   And knowing that the Haslams are still the final decision-maker it would the least surprising thing ever if they do fuck it up.

You know the joke about messing up a one car funeral?  Well - our coaching search is now just that.  We are competing with no one but ourselves.  Let's see if we can overcome our inner Haslams and do the right thing.  For once.

Oh...and did i mention thank you Giants?   I mean it.  Thanks guys - we definitely owe you one next coaching search.

It's the same thing that always happens to royal families. When power and wealth is automatically transferred from parent to child to grandchild, regardless of ability or interest, things eventually go to shit. It may take a few generations to manifest, but unless the senior family members takes an unusual interest in training and education of the next generations, the decline is virtually inevitable.

Valenti needs to just GTFO here with his nonstop crybaby crap about the Giants. He acts like they haven’t ever won a game in his lifetime, let alone 5 Super Bowls.
Yeah they’re in a down cycle but it’s professional sports, it happens sooner or later. I’m thinking the fan bases all but 3 or 4 NFL teams would kill to have the Giants relatively recent success.

What a fucking joke this franchise is! He's a 1 year WR coach & 8 year ST coordinator/coach/assistant with New England and 3 year ST assistant with Alabama and now he's the coach of an NFL team... the Mara's can go fuck themselves!

I’m a fellow Giants fan. That was my initial reaction, but upon reflection, I am going to see how he does before I call this a bad move. A few reasons:

1. There is no obvious home run hire out there. Everyone acts like Rhule is the next Vince Lombardi, but based off of what?  Good results in college?  There are a number of guys who had huge college success that did not translate to NFL success in coaching. Rhule was still a big risk. After that, who else?  Rivera was hired already (and was not exactly a superstar), please no to Jason Garrett as HC (but I would be cool with hiring him as OC), Josh McDaniels is a huge risk; who else is out there?

2. Judge has studied for years under arguably the two most successful HC out there today - BB in NE and Saban. While he is young, he has certainly seen what it takes to build a team for success.

3. He seems like a no-nonsense coach who won’t trade crap (like those that he studied under). I do NOT want a players coach - the Giants need a leader of men who can build a winning attitude.

4. While not the most conventional route, John Harbaugh went from position coach to NFL HC and it seems to be working out fine for him.

Again, I’m not saying this will work out but some of the negative reaction out there seems excessive.

Rhule is risky, but winning games with similar / inferior talent is a pretty decent translation of what working in the NFL is like (where the talent gap is so narrow). He's a lot better choice than Lincoln Riley from the college ranks. I really, really like the Rhule / Tepper (owner) combination.

What Belichick disciple has had success? O'Brien maybe, but that team has arguably top 5 NFL talent without top 5 results.

That being said, I agree with you that arguing over Judge's resume is idiotic. Being a head coach in the NFL (or college for that matter) doesn't require a great deal of X&O abilities. It does require an ability to manage and handle people and the ability to put together a seamless organization (like a mid-sized company). Swinney and Meyer were never coordinators before being head coaches. Same with Harbaugh in Baltimore, as mentioned.

The NFL trend of having head coaches involved in the GM search is the smartest thing owners have done in a generation.

I'n not disagreeing that Rhule would have been a good choice.  My only point is that many are making it like the Giants whiffed on getting Belichick, Pete Carroll or John Harbaugh by not taking him.  He is far from a shore thing.

As for Belichick disciples not having success - I agree, and that is why I didn't want McDaniels.  I don't view Judge as a Belichick disciple (as I would for one of his coordinators), but more as someone who has spent a good amount of time around Belichick and Saban, and hopefully from that time, has observed what makes a program win.  Your point about a NFL HC not needing quite as much X&O experience, as the ability to run an organization seamlessly and lead people is spot on.

Fellow Giants fan here. I think you make some good points regarding the hire.

I don't blame the Giants for not matching Carolina's offer to Rhule; while I'll reserve judgement on the Rhule hire the same way I am for the Judge hire, that's a long contract with a lot of money-- not to mention the "sports science center" Carolina threw in to the deal. The Giants were never going to match that deal.

Risky hire but sounds like a resume similar to the following NFL head coach: Harbaugh, JOHN. Think he's done OK for himself in Baltimore.  He's a Belichick favorite which may carry some influence with Mara.

Can't blame him for Pats WR's this year.  Greatest WR in league history could not make chicken salad out of the chicken shit they had.
