OT: Novelty Sports Event Ideas
Novelty sports events are becoming more and more commonplace in the past couple decades. Some examples include: hockey games played in outdoor football/baseball stadiums, NFL games in London, college basketball games played on an aircraft carrier. Are there any novelty sports events you'd love to see?
My wish is to see the Lions play an outdoor game at Comerica Park. My favorite stadium of all time is Tiger Stadium, and I love the fact that the Lions used to play all their home games there before the Silverdome was built. It would be awesome to see them do that again for one game at Comerica Park. Frankly, I don't know why this hasn't happened already. Maybe Comerica Park isn't big enough (although I think it probably is big enough)? Another option is the Lions playing a game at the Big House, but I suspect Michigan fans would not want to risk the Lions bringing their curse to Ann Arbor.
Wouldn't mind seeing Michigan play in one of those National Championship things.
Michigan vs Tennessee at MIS to set the national attendance record.
That would be a horrible experience for fans. The best seat in the house would be like the last row at Michigan Stadium.
They'd have to have jumbotrons all over the stands and infield.
Field of Dreams game has been pretty great. I would also love to see them play a real game at Cooperstown.
Hopefully this will happen soon, Michigan playing a southern school, in a playoff game in December at the big house.
Repeat of 11/27/21, snow and all. Glorious
Lions can play in Columbus, East Lansing, and South Bend. Stay away for Ann Arbor
I wouldn’t mind Michigan Michigan State basketball playing in Detroit for a non- conference game
Michigan vs. Kentucky Basketball at the Big House in November.
Turning back the clock to Novelty Sports, let's bring back Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell to host The Big Ten version of ABC's Superstars with one male and one female athlete from each school.
Keith is probably available, but Cosell passed away. RIP, Howard.
Oh wow, you haven't heard about Keith?!
At halftime of every UM home football opener, a ticketholder is selected at random from the crowd and they get to throw whipped cream pies at the NCAA president who is tied to a chair at the south goal line. They get three attempts from the 5-, 10-, and 15-yard line. If they connect from 5 yards, they free tickets to the Michigan basketball opener. If they connect from the 10, they get two tickets to the UM-OSU game. If they connect from the 15, they get a brand new car from a local car dealer.
Change it to hockey pucks launched from a slap shot at Yost instead of pies in the Big House and I’m in.
ALMOST a great idea. However throwing pies is totally a movie thing. You can't really throw pies in real life more than a yard or two, at least not accurately enough to hit a face.
Movies make it seem possible but that's thanks to camera angles, including someone standing just off camera throwing it from a few feet.
Comedians and clowns try to duplicate the effect live but their "throws" are really more like pushes.
EDIT: So maybe we use MadMonkey's idea of hockey pucks.
Play some basketball or hockey games in national parks on the best located parking lots with the most amazing backdrops. This is basically the aircraft carrier concept incorporating the parks.
You basically just need a lot in an amazing location on which to put a court/rink/bleachers.
- Probably a non-starter, but every MLB team plays 1 home game in their AAA affiliate's stadium one year (e.g., Tigers hosting some other MLB team in Toledo). The next year, a home game in their AA affiliate. Then A - then go back around.
- Michigan State in a Motor City Bowl (they purposely lost to IU last year to avoid this!).
- F1 Race on the Vegas strip. Actually, they are already doing this in November!
- Michigan State High School football finals moved a week later (they get lost in the shuffle now that the B1G plays on Thanksgiving weekend) and alternated between Ann Arbor and East Lansing. Michigan's a northern state, no indoor finals!
Love the first idea. I take my kids to a few Indianapolis Indians games a year. Would be really cool to see MLB teams there.
Maybe I'm crazy but I thought it would be cool to see a scrimmage/exhibition against a real team (not ourselves) at the end of the spring camp. This would basically be a meaningless game but it would be fun for the fans. Make some rules about contact like we already have in our spring game (no hitting the QB, etc.) to avoid injuries. Go 1s v. 1s for the first half, then 2nd and 3rd string after that.
Not sure how it would work, but it would be fun to do a home and home exhibition versus, say, LSU, FSU, or Texas. Make it someplace warm and have it over the Spring Break (if possible) so students could go and watch when it's away.
Pickleball on an aircraft carrier.
Tigers play a game at Tiger Stadium Field. Maybe a preseason game
Ben Mathers running toward responsibility. Running, skipping whatever.
Two competitors vie to be the best at imitating Izzo's rants.
Increasing the degree of difficulty—and our fun—it would be during the game, standing on either side of him.
Dressed as referees.
Lions-Browns Super Bowl sounds pretty novel to me.
Hey now, let's not be asking for any apocalyptic "surely the world is about to end" sporting events.
no doubt. and going to the news desk, you can see tom brokaw saying, 'this just in: they're officially making frozen margaritas in hell'.
Now that NFL plays 17 games I'd like each team to have a neutral site game. Early in season I'd like a few in Europe, but most in the second half of season in warm sites, phoenix, los Vegas, Mexico, Hawaii.
NHL game on Lake Louise.
THAT would be a sight to behold.
