OT - NFL thanks the City of Detroit and the Lions
In a commercial that will air during halftime of all the early games, the NFL will thank the City of Detroit and the Lions. Feels pretty cool to be a Lions fan today. It's nice to be singled out for something good for a change.

That was a fun game to be at, probably a good idea they edited out the 10,000 false starts for the commercial.

Maybe they can reward us with a better team.

At the very least they can grant three additional first round picks in this year's draft.

Maybe they can reward us with a better team.
They tried. They gave us a list of good potential GMs we could hire after Millen finally got the axe. Mr. Ford declined the help and hired Millen's protege.
Can't wait til that old man croaks.

In fairness to Mr. Mayhew, he has made very sound football decisions. Mayhew probably only had to bring a list of the players that he went on the record suggesting that the lions draft. Because Mayhew was hired so quickly, this is a very plausible scenario. Not to mention, that being excited about someone croaking is in very bad taste.

New management is responsible for me throwing away perfectly good Sunday afternoons for the first time.

that was amazing, had that thing go around at least 7 times.

despite having attended multiple games at the big house this year (and thus having just seen many impressive waves), my companion at the game was still super impressed by the longevity of that wave. (personally i was off buying dinner--d'oh!)
December 19th, 2010 at 10:23 AM ^
I dunno if this was your first year attending games at the Big House, but trust me: there was not a decent wave at the Big House this year. When we are playing well and games are out of reach in the first half, there's nothing better than a Big House wave.

When we are playing well and games are out of reach in the first half, there's nothing better than a Big House wave.I can think of about a thousand things that are better then doing the wave at MICH.

You hit the nail on the head Mr. Cunt Punt.

I'm no femiNazi nor hypersensitive about such things, but in case it hasn't occurred to you, there are women who read and contribute to this forum. Violence against women, depicted in your name and avatar, is neither clever nor funny.

The UMass second half wave wasn't bad

i'm midway through my third decade of M games (i only missed one year between 1985 and 2008, although unfortunately that was 1997), and the 7th year with my own season tickets. i probably just can't differentiate years anymore.

if they really wanted to thank us, they could amend that rule about completing the process of a catch
December 19th, 2010 at 9:46 AM ^
As a thank you, the NFL should turn a blind eye to all the holding by Backus and Raiola so the Lions can actually make a big play and get to keep it.
December 19th, 2010 at 4:47 AM ^
the wave? Seriously? The wave is a testament to going to sporting events to be a part of a mob of people as opposed to actually watching and responding to a sporting event. Lame.

the coolest things ever. Don't be such a Debbie Downer.

We didn't invent it, we just perfected it.

Some thank you. They didn't even use the Lions' new logo.

I noticed that, total bush league.

a super bowl.

Mybe they could not have fucked us over in the first Bears game, the Jets game (horrible spots the entire last drive for the Jets to get them in FG range), the second Bears game. Seriously this season has disappointed me more than any other in recent memory because we are actually a really good team. We just can't get a fucking call. Fuck you NFL.

Preach my brother!

Other than THAT though you're pretty happy with the officiating right? I'm a Browns fan and I can tell you we can't blame the refs for our suckitude. Our record is purely a function of having the WORST OC in the NFL bar none.
If Brian Daboll and Gerg ever joined forces I think their team would lose 100-0 every game.
December 19th, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
We would be a completely different team if Sarah Stafford could ever stay on the field, but we have had three games literally taken from us by way of awful officiating. I don't like to blame the refs, but that process call was absolute bullshit by any account. The spots weren't really noticeable to everyone because the camera pans in so close, but I was watching it closely. They gave the Jets an extra three yards on three seperate plays on that drive. That's nine yards to get into FG range to win. It was a robbery. Then the Suh tackle. It was a tackle. They replayed it and it was an open hand push to a guy who was running with the ball... how is that illegal. Then to fine him just to save face was completely bush. The NFL is turning into something to frustrating to watch. It's brutal. With our shitty division we could be in the #1 spot with 3 more wins (two against the division leader!!).

I'm a Lions fan. I admit it.
That said, we haven't had a good offensive line in...my lifetime.
Barry Sanders would've cleared 20,000 yards in 10 years if the Lions offensive game plan wasn't to hand off to Barry and hope he can dodge 3 DL and an LB in the backfield before making 2 (or 60) yards.
Kitna got hit more than Gerry Cooney in the years he QBed in Detroit. Poor guy looked punch drunk after getting pounded the year Detroit started 6-2. No wonder they closed out 1-7.
Stafford never had a chance. Here's hoping the next area of investment in the draft and free agency is top-tier OL. Probably drafting around 4th or 5th this year, so it should be doable.
December 19th, 2010 at 8:54 PM ^
I largely agree, but the myth that Barry Sanders didn't have an above-average line in front of him for most of his career has always bugged me. Lomas Brown was an All-Pro, Kevin Glover made some Pro Bowls toward the end, and FBs like Vardell and Schlesinger (while not used that often) were still good blockers. Yes, Barry's line was those 90's Dallas lines that babied Emmit Smith, but he wasn't running behind the Lions line of the past couple of years.
December 19th, 2010 at 10:14 PM ^
Agreed. Comparisons are obviously relative, and in the Barry vs. Emmitt debates that raged during the 1990s, it was a given that Emmitt had a major advantage on the offensive line.
December 19th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
A) Lions fans really don't give a shit about much especially what a non-Lions fan might think about them.
B) Stafford tends to fall on that shoulder a lot. Every QB gets hit and not all of them go out because they fall right on their shoulder over and over and over. I agree we need to solidify the line, but we grabbed Suh last year... that seems to be working out... before that we picked a franchise QB... can't fault that pick... I think this year we actually have the need AND there will be a player there. It has a lot to do with timing and players available. The line is decent, but not terrible. I wish we could replace Raiola. That guy is a liability. Backus is actually resurging this year, IME.
December 19th, 2010 at 2:52 PM ^
Don't disagree with either of your points. Mine is that we need to invest in OL or that QB investment may be wasted.
December 19th, 2010 at 7:41 PM ^
Had they drafted Michael Oher instead of Pettigrew, they wouldn't have to worry about either.
December 19th, 2010 at 4:51 PM ^
for staying with them even though they haven't given them much of a reason to. You can call them delusional but damnit they're dedicated. If and when the Lions ever field a playoff team this town will explode.
December 19th, 2010 at 11:46 PM ^
Sure. The NFL has a lot to "thank" the LIons for. Like, "thanks for donating so many wins to needy teams while still selling enough tickets to turn a profit." Or, "thanks to the fans for being naive enough to continue to back the worst franchise in the league for the last fifty years." Or "thanks for pulling a ten-year 'Weekend at Bernie's' with WCF, thus avioding messy probate proceedings.
