OT-NFL coaches & execs rate QBs (ON topic: Brady #3)

Submitted by Blue Vet on July 25th, 2022 at 6:36 PM

It's in New York Times connection The Athletic. Both are usually paywalled but I believe it's accessible with this link.

It may only show up for me because I get the NY Times. If so, sorry, and here are some major points of interest:

Tier 1

#1 Rodgers

#2 Mahomes

#3 Brady

... Tier 2

#7 Stafford

... Tier 3

#15 Cousins (He'd get in a hypothetical "Tier 3 Hall of Fame.")

#22 Goff of the Lions

Paywalled, but was able to do the disable javascript workaround to read it.

On Brady:

“The things that make him great aren’t going to age poorly — his command of everything, his knowledge and vision,” a defensive coach said. “But I do think there’s a wider arsenal of defenses available that are more effective against him. If you are just straight pressuring him, he’s going to murder you, and if you are just straight in coverages, he is going to murder you. We got him on some simulated pressures, which I think people are figuring out.”

Should be noted that Tier 1 is QBs 1-6, so Stafford is the top guy in Tier 2.

Also, Tier 4 leads off with #25 Justin Fields of the Bears.

“I do think his anticipation in the dropback game needs to improve, but he does throw a really good deep ball and deep cross route where some of those other guys, I did not have that feel in the dropback game of, ‘Can they make certain throws as consistently?’ ” this coach said. “It is everything else he has to figure out. I don’t think he is going to be a top-shelf guy this year, but you are going to trend. You are going to say, ‘We can win with this guy.’ I don’t think he is ever going to be a 1. I think he can climb to maybe a 2, high Tier 3.”

It was more a backhand compliment (and a terrible misuse of the the word “threw” on my behalf).

It looked impeccable because he was hitting his man in stride 50 yards down field, but with how clean his pocket was and elite his receivers were made his job real easy.

What I saw from Stroud in the Rose Bowl was on par with what I saw from Fields in the CFP

Not so fast WCB.  Considering Fields played behind the worst offensive line and receiving corps in football 2021 under a leadership coaching swan song we might cut Justin some slack.  Buckeye bias from the board aside Fields has some gifts and under the right game plan and surrounded by some talent he deserves a 3 year plan before assessment.

Brady keeps getting disrespected. Oh well. He will toss another trophy on the pile at the end of the season

I love Josh Allen. I think Herbert is a stud. And Joe Burrow looks like a longterm star. BUT they should not be ranked above Stafford. Stafford has all the stats these guys have from his Lions days AND a super bowl win.

Leaders And Best

My favorite comment in the article:

Rodgers beats the competition in two categories multiple voters cited: the ability to elevate his weaponry and in how he not only outsmarts opponents, but relishes doing so.

“(Tom) Brady has had the more decorated career with 10 Super Bowls and seven rings, but I will say this,” an offensive coach said. “Aaron Rodgers has helped elevate every player on that offense. Brady with N’Keal Harry did not elevate his game. Aaron has had Davante Adams, but he is still waiting for a first-round receiver, they have not had great receivers overall and he is still putting up major numbers.”

Like what? Brady did have one of the all time great TEs in Gronkowski for half of his career, but a common theme throughout his career with the Patriots was winning with few weapons at WRs and elevating their game. The WR group was constantly turning over, but it never affected the play on the field.

N'Keal Harry was a rookie during Brady's final season in NE and was on injured reserve for the first half of that season, and that is the guy you use for the example of WR production under Tom Brady?

Yeah, I can't imagine claiming Brady doesn't elevate guys when you have players like Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Troy Brown, and a slew of other unheralded guys turn in great years with him at QB and underwhelm everywhere else.

Rodgers is a great QB as well but it's insane to claim Brady somehow had a loaded cupboard at WR.  If anything that's a tag that should be attached to someone like Peyton Manning.

You can't really make the argument that Rodgers has elevated the game of his playmakers better than Brady did. Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan. Outside of Gronk and what I think was only a one year rental with Moss, Brady has largely had a ragtag group of receivers for most of his career. Especially when he was in New England, and you found those guys making plays left and right on a consistent basis.

Yes, Brady has Godwin and Evans right now and I will absolutely admit that they are among the best WR duos in the game right now, but the point is for a majority of Brady's career, he has not had a lethal corps of receivers to throw to.

I will never understand why people view Kirk Cousins as anything more than a league-average QB.  When you surround him with a lot of weapons he'll throw for a ton of yards (and still only win about 50% of his games doing so) but that's it.

Rodgers, with all those Super Bowl wins, should be #1.

One of the things that makes players great is their ability to make others around them better.  How many times has Brady taken a washed up player or a no-body former rugby player and won with them?  He’s the GOAT and should be placed at #1 and then the dorks can vote on the rest of them.

No wonder these guys are so poor picking quarterback talent out of college. They can't even properly identify talent when it's been in the league for years.

No reason that Brady shouldn't be #1 on this list. None whatsoever.

Mahomes has time to get there eventually, and his physical abilities allow him to have a potentially higher ceiling than Brady, but Brady has such a dominance over the mental aspect of the game, and that doesn't diminish with age. It gets better. And you can't beat the man's ability to make everyone around him better.

Case in point, with the Bucs. Tampa was a completely irrelevant afterthought before Brady showed up. They had some really good individual pieces, but they were mired down in a losing culture, a team that had no idea how to win, hadn't been to the playoffs in 13 years and were regularly playing in a two thirds full stadium where as many as half the fans showing up were fans of the other team. No one cared about them, and oftentimes they played like it. They were target practice for Drew Brees and Matt Ryan on a year in, year out basis.

In one year, Brady blew that entire culture up and won them a ring. He makes everyone better because he raises the bar with his expectations and how he approaches the game and his overall level of preparation and execution. From the huddle to the front office staff to the freaking water boy. Brady raises the game and the expectations, and everyone falls in line with it.

Rodgers may elevate the play of his offense. He's never had to elevate the play of his entire organization. Brady turned an entire franchise of afterthought losers into determined winners, and its not unreasonable to think that Brady could have changed Tampa's fortunes for the next decade, even well after he's gone for good.

What you described about Brady elevating a franchise is right on, brother. This might be considered a hawt take, but, to a lesser extent, I see many of those same qualities in Cade McNamara. There are certain people who all they do is win. TB is one of them. Cade is another. If you haven't read about Cade's background, his preparedness, his will to win, I'd suggest starting with this article:
