OT: The NBA Is Having Itself a Morning

Submitted by mGrowOld on June 16th, 2021 at 11:51 AM

And it's not even noon yet.

Suns guard Chris Paul has been placed in Covid protocol and is out indefinitely.   Paul had been vaccinated so unsure as of now how long he's going to be out

LA Clippers' Kawhi Leonard could miss rest of series with knee injury

Detroit's own Stan Van Gundy is out in New Orleans after only one year as the Head Coach

And Scott Brooks wont be going back to the Wizards as HC because they couldnt agree on his contract renewal terms

There are now six head coaching vacancies in the NBA (Portland, Boston, Indiana, Orlando, New Orleans and Washington) with strong rumors out there that if Milwaukee doesnt advance Budenholzer will be out too.   And with Paul and Leonard now out indefinitely, the Jazz have moved back to being favorites to come out of the west right now when literally last night they were the longshot in Vegas.

I'll say this, if I was a highly sought after college head coach, say someone at a well-known, prestigious basketball school, I would certainly look at the instability in the NBA and think long and hard before even considering moving to that uncertain future.  Especially if I was coaching at my alma mater where I was almost universally loved and respected by fans, alumni and even my fellow coaches.  if I was THAT guy, I'd stay right where I was for a very, very long time.

My low back stiffened and I tweaked a hammy just reading this post.

I cannot be fired since I'm self-employed.

Like all of us, my status is day to day.

The fact Utah or Phoenix will make the Finals is a nice development. Would be even better if they faced off against Milwaukee or Atlanta

But...this all seems like pretty ordinary stuff. Okay, yeah, Paul is out with COVID--that's something. But a playoff injury? Two coaches got fired? I want Howard to chill in Maize n' Blue loungewear forever too but come on, man. Have you seen what's happening with major league baseball? Now there's a sport doing everything it can to kill itself.

Would any of that stop someone from taking an NBA coaching job because chaos and anarchy though? I'm old enough to remember Kareem getting hurt and unable to play in an NBA final. Yeah, it was news but...athletes get hurt. That's sports. Magic played center and the Lakers won anyway.

This is what I'm responding to:

This is what I'm questioning--in a good-natured way.

I was about to post a similar thought. Give me a top 4 pick and I will be satisfied. Kuminga is a solid prospect at 5 but a huge project I'd rather not undertake. Would also take both Jalen's over Mobley.

So see you all here when we pick 6 and have to start dragging through some names.

“Michigan’s Juwan Howard continues to tell NBA teams he’s not interested in even a discussion on leaving Ann Arbor,” is part of what the ESPN NBA reporter tweeted, also adding that teams were starting to focus more on Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway, another former NBA all-star turned college head coach.

Unless you are talking about this head coach at this highly prestigious school?

I don't know. Maybe I could get more excited about the NBA if my team (Pistons) was any good.

Unfortunately I was fully immersed in it for the period between the mid-80s to the mid-90s when the Lakers, Celtics, Pistons, then Bulls staged a ten-year war. The basketball of that era was so superior to what we're seeing now it is not even close. Those were grown ass men who hated each others guts. It was delightful.

Also has been reported that Calipari is open to coaching again in the NBA.

Would be crazy if NCCAB lost Roy, K and Cal all in the same year. Well K after next season, but still would be wild.

This is terrible news for the Suns, although they may overcome it.  I don’t think the Clippers can win their series against Utah without Kawhi, though.  It’s been a rough playoff for injuries.  Embiid and Hardin looked like old men the last couple of nights.  Even if Kawhi comes back, how effective will he be?

Penny ain’t no Juwan.  Penny’s got a lot of great recruits through shady means, and still hasn’t done much in the tourney.  Won’t have a bag advantage in the NBA.

Given that he's reportedly vaccinated -- and thus unlikely to experience prolonged illness --  and that the Suns won't be scheduled to start their next series for another week or so, I really don't think this is a huge deal for them. Maybe he misses a game or two, which would definitely hurt, but my money is still very much on the Suns to make it out of the West.

I think Juwan is very pleased to have a fun and thrilling job as the head coach at his alma mater. The NBA is a shit show and I think he knows better than to deal with their BS. He's seen it up close for a very long time.

If I were ranking coaching jobs for Juwan Howard, here's how I would rank them

1a.  Michigan basketball head coach

1b. NBA head coach (any team)

3. NBA assistant coach (any team)

4.  College head coach (any team but Michigan)

Howard wouldn't have come to Michigan if he had a head coaching job in the NBA when Beilein left, so I could easily switch those, but he won't leave for the NBA now that he has the Michigan job.  Michigan was very fortunate that he was an NBA assistant when they had an opening.

I've been here over 10 years so I've certainly seen my fair share of thinly veiled racist posts.

Yours is not very thinly veiled.   I can only image the words you wanted to type but decided to edit out when describing the players.

Yes, I just saw this and "trudged" through his previous posts. He blows up about something about once a week or so, screaming constantly about "wokeism", "cancel culture", etc., and it started almost immediately after he opened his account. My guess is that he was previously banned.

Enough from him already.

I wonder: if someone offered to quadruple your salary and give you a 5 year contract, would you just blow the offer off?  Maybe, if you had already earned millions playing basketball.
