OT: NBA Finals

Submitted by Ultimate Quizmaster on
As this game heads to overtime, I can't believe how unbelievably selfish Kobe is being. I don't care for either team, but for a NBA veteran, Kobe is just hogging the ball. They would have won this game by now had Kobe distributed the ball, especially to a wide open Odom at the end of the game.

I can't stand the Lakers, period. It's not their history and championships or jealousy, it's how disgusting and overrated their fanbase is. I've never seen a more undeserving group of fans or a quieter finals game. I bet you could get a louder game at Charlotte if they were 9-72 because the fans would want them to get a 10th win. Granted, it's not all about the fans, but the attention LA gets for its overrated "home court advantage" is ridiculous. Too bad Lee was just a tiny bit off, or the series would look entirely different. Also Gasol and Vujechic need haircuts.

You are correct about everything. You will never see more fair weather fans than you do here in southern California. I have been living here since I moved from Ann Arbor when I was six and I have been surrounded by USC and Laker "fans" my entire life. The majority of kids my age will tell you that they started liking the Lakers when they won their first championship. I just feel bitter because I hate the Lakers. IIRC Adam Carolla made a very good observation on the LA fan base. He basically said that people around here could care less if their team is not doing well. He pointed mainly to the fact that there is so much to do in LA compared to other smaller cities.

I'm tired of their celebrity fans. Jack Nicholson in particular. I had the game on in the background yesterday, and I looked up when I heard loud booing (because if the Lakers crowd is booing, something good must have happened) and saw Nicholson take a step towards (or onto?) the court to berate the refs after what he thought was a terrible call (but which replay showed was an excellent call). Why is that okay? I'd love to see him get kicked out of the arena.

Come on, Jack is a die-hard fan who goes to every game and has had season tickets for as long as I can remember. He gets away with a little more of the arguing because he's a celeb, but he's legitimate as far as fanhood goes. As far as the other celebrities, what do you expect? It's LA. They live here. They are allowed to go to sporting events too. In fact, most of them try their hardest not to be recognized, and most of us wouldn't know they were there if the camera people weren't told to search them out.

I have no problem with his being a die-hard fan; that's something I can respect. But I do have a problem with his obnoxious behavior when he's sitting courtside. He needs to tone it down a lot -- can't he yell from his seat like everybody else? -- or sit somewhere else in the arena. As it is, he's putting himself in the spotlight, and there's no way he doesn't know that.

I think the NBA is the biggest joke of a professional league out there. I'd much rather watch college basketball over the NBA. Anyone else out there feel the same way?

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Back during the NCAA tournament, I was able to flip the tv back and forth between a tournament game and an NBA game. I couldn't believe the contrast between the two -- next to the NCAA game, the NBA game was practically unwatchable.

Actually, I completely and respectfully disagree. NCAA basketball officiating is terrible and is just as bad as the pro game if not worse. The 3 pt line is a joke, home court officiating advantage is ridiculous, there is a ton of turnover b/c of early departure, and the majority of the talent in NCAA bball is sub par compared to the pros. At the very least, the NBA players are phenomenal to watch b/c of their amazing skill, talent, and athleticism. Now, I was appalled at a lot of the crap that went down last night and in general in the NBA, but I would never watch non-Michigan NCAA ball over the NBA except for maybe tournament play vs. regular season NBA. Compare this to college football and the NFL: because football players have to stay in the game for 3 years, there is a lot of high caliber talent that remains in the college game. Also, some would argue that the NFL "no fun league" is dull in comparison to the pageantry in the college game. I don't see the NBA as bland as the NFL compared to its college counterpart. The NBA sucks but NCAA ball is worse. Maybe if this were Nuggets vs. Magic people would feel less annoyed by this series...I don't know.

I just want the league to do something about those games where Donaghy admitted to fixing. I am not sure what can be done, but what I am sure of is that the NBA is not going to do anything. They don't care as long as their poster child the lakers win the championship.

Yeah, I'm bummed about the CWebb thing too, they would have won the finals that year, and then CWebb would he a lock for the Hall, IMO. I used to hate the Lakers too, but now I work right down the street from Staples, and although I'm not a fan, I'm not a hater either.

Playoff NBA is definitely worth watching because the players are all playing their hardest. HOWEVER, earlier this season, I watched several games, and to point out one example, I watched the Pistons @ Cavs in March. It was the worst basketball game I've ever watched. Several times, after a basket, BOTH TEAMS *walked* the *entire* way down the floor with only the dribbler jogging to catch the time line. It was pathetic, and if you don't believe it happened, I encourage you to go find the game film and find it. I'd watch NCAA basketball over regular NBA games any day because at least NCAA players try - and most the rivalries are better, imo. Except for maybe the one-year wonder rivalries in the NBA like Boston-Cleveland.

the NBA playoffs this year more than years where the Pistons went deep into the playoffs. I think it's because I get less stressed out by calls because I don't feel like I'm being screwed over. Also, I've really enjoyed Orlando's run.
