I say Five Guys because I'm from the midwest.

I've waited in the drive thru line at In-N-Out for over a half hour. If I go there now, I almost always park and go inside. The fries are really good when they are hot, but once they cool down they are nothing special. 5 Guys was good the first couple times I went there, but it gives me indigestion and an hour later I wish I'd gone someplace else. I'll take Carl's Jr. for a quick, inexpensive, delicious burger any day. Super Star with Cheese, that's the way to go.

What fries are good after they cool down?

Carl's Jr.? That place is terrible. The burgers are so bland and ridiculously tasteless even with cheese and bacon. Who has tasteless bacon?!?! CARL'S JR.'S DOES!

"I'll take Carl's Jr. for a quick, inexpensive, delicious burger any day." Delicious? Your Carl's Jr franchise is definitely not the same as the one I infrequent.

I'm not sure about the worst (some of the guys who are negative on EVERYTHING are worse IMO) but damn this shtick is getting old fast to me.  Every once in a while these type of popular culture debates can be fun (when somewhat topical) but they seem to coming every hour on the hour right now.

But hey - based on the responses people seem to like talking about them so I'm guessing we'll soon see the likes of:

OT: Colgate or Crest?

OT: Right Guard or Degree?

OT: Jennifer or Scarlett?

OT: ISIS or The Third Reich?

OT: Cancer or Heat Disease?

I don't understand the love for Five Guys.  Their cheeseburger is an enormous pile of cheese with some overcooked meat underneath, almost like they're using the cheese to cover up the lack of quality in the rest of their product.

In-n-out isn't great--the "special sauce," or whatever they call it, is terrible--but the quality of the rest of the ingredients push it much higher on my list than Five Guys

That's tough to say. 5 guys is much bigger, more expensive, more toppings, etc. Its less fresh and less fast. In-n-out's super fresh, simple, smaller, faster and cheaper. You don't need to order a huge burger, but you can order a double, triple, etc. This is one of those areas where less is more.

people who hear about in-n-out and are disappointed because of the hype come in expecting more than it is. its just simple and really fresh. if you don't care for the sauce, that's just a basic personal preference. you don't have to get it and the burger, lettuce, tomato are the freshest you'll find.

If you expect a gourmet burger, you will be disappointed.  If you want a burger for under $5 that is both fast and fresh, In-N-Out is the best I have tried.  My only issue is with people who put In-N-Out at the pinnacle of burgerdom.  It's not, but it is at the top of the list of fast food chain burgers.

It's probably a simple result of geography, but you can't get lettuce and tomatoes anywhere in Michigan that are as fresh and tasty as what In-N-Out puts on their burgers.  I understand that's what keeps them from expanding any further East than they are right now (Texas, I think, is as far East as they go):  they would have to freeze their veggies to ship them.

I enjoy thick, juicy meat - well-prepared, freshened, impressively sized.

My coworkers definitely do, too. We've got a girl on staff who puts them away - you've got to see it to believe it. The bigger the better.

Going to a grocery store with quality meat, getting a pound of 80/20, making a few thin patties, seasoning very liberally with salt and pepper, and then putting it on a charcoal grill.

If you want a good, juicy burger, you've just got to buy quality meat with a high fat content and cook it quickly at a high temperature.

Grew up in California, live in DC.

In-N-Out is way overrated.  Five Guys is great, but I've never left there without feeling like i wiped grease all over my face and want to die.  For my money, with burgers in the "massive chain slightly better than the classics" category, Shake Shack wipes the floor with all comers.
