OT?: Michigan Stadium Graduation Cake

Submitted by billsquared on
I'm finally graduating tomorrow, 18 years after I took my first class in Ann Arbor, Fall of 1991. Obviously, this is a pretty big deal, so we're doing the whole friends-and-family graduation party at the house afterwards. My wife has been taking cake decorating classes, and got good enough at it that she's now teaching the classes at a local Michaels. We got a sports arena bundt pan from her brother a year or so back, and figured this was the perfect time to break it out. After a test run last week to check the frosting colors and whatnot, she finished up the final product today. Some pictures: (Clicky on the pictures to go to larger versions on my Gallery site.) Comments?

Nope, just my BS, in Earth Sciences. I left school after Winter '95 a few credits short, plus needed my ULWR. I finished the credits locally a couple of years back, then just recently finished working with one of the Geology profs on getting the second half of the writing requirement finalized. Nothing like trying to go back after 15 years away from a subject to write a ten-page paper. Ugh. Still, very glad to have it finished, finally.

Congratulations, man. Going back after being out of the game for so long is truly commendable. And you definitely found a winner in your wife. Good luck with your future journeys. Oh, and.....that cake is fucking AWESOME. Kudos to your wife.

That cake is beautiful. Eating it is gonna suck, no matter how good it tastes. Are the scoreboards edible?

Yep, basically everything is edible. The scoreboards and goal posts have florist wire holding them up, that's the only thing of the entire cake that isn't edible. The scoreboards and field are rolled fondant. It's not the tastiest of stuff, but it is absolutely edible.

When I was growing up, who ever was celebrating his or her birthday would get the best piece of the cake (i.e., the one with the most candy decorations, the one without melted wax, etc). So, my question to you is, as the guest of honor, what piece will you select?

You should have put an object for reference in the picture, like a church, so there's no question as to actual size. I'm sure my perception is acurate regardless and that thing will easily feed 106,501.

Sweet cake. I have a question: Is there any significance to the numbers on the scoreboard? A particular game, or anything? Hopefully I can get a cake like that when I graduate.
