OT: Michael Phelps headed to 5th Olympics
The title says it all! Congrats to him!

Do they only have 12 eggs? It always feels like more honestly. The field of potatoes that constitutes a serving of hash browns (in my experiences there anyway) might contribute to that feeling though. It's a good place to go if you want to eat enough in one meal to carry you through the day though, so if that's among the reasons that Phelps is on the walls there, then good move.

He didn't win the gold in 2012 in the 200 fly, but yes, he's the dominant guy in the event.
He's a weed achiever! Go Smokey P! Go Blue!
Michael Phelps might be one of the greatest Wolverine athletes of all time based on his out-of-college athletic career.
He should certainly be in the conversation, at the very least.
If you open it up to off-the-field/out-of-college stuff -- or close it off to just in-college-athletics -- then it's Tom Harmon all the way.
Charles Woodson only came here for Lloyd Carr and then left early, so he's probably not "technically" a Wolverine athlete either.
The guy was enrolled in the school, he's a Wolverine.
is Phelps never competed for the University of Michigan in a swim meet. Woodson played football for 3 yrs at Michigan.

perhaps greatest, professional swimmer of all time.
attended michigan and trained with swim club.
never competed for michigan.
very unique situation- only in modern era of professionals in olympic sports would such a situation exist.
i guess claim him if you can.
They have him splattered all over their locker room.
in Brazil and not the sea water. I wouldn't want to see him ingesting all of that raw sewage in whatever events they plan on running out there.
Rio is potentially a disaster site for these Olympics. Between Zitka, ISIS, crime etc. these may end up being the most tragic Olympics since 72'. Hope it will not be the case...but every day there are incidents in Rio pointing that that. Today a dismembered body rolled up with the tides near where the volleyball will play.
Still pissed at Hungary, eh?
Karch's sister is a MICHIGAN ALUM, 1995.
I was remiss in my updates in the thread where I talk to myself :)
Updates from tonight:
Nathan Adrian leads the field into tomorrow night's 100 free final. Matt Grevers didn't qualify - we are seeing a changing of the guard this Trials with Lochte and Grevers not looking too good.
Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin (Minutemaid is happy) made the team in the 200 free.
Michael Phelps and "Beefy T" Tom Shields are our representatives in the 200 fly.
Kevin Cordes and Josh Prenot seeded 1-2 in tomorrow's 200 breast final.
Maya Dirado earns her second spot on the team with a win in the 200 IM, joined by Melanie Margalis.
I was surprised that Franklin did so poorly in the 100 back. I haven't followed closely so I just thought she was automatic bid in that event.
Glad he gave it another go. He was ready to be done after last O's. The pool gets old, but after you say no it doesnt matter if you say yes the rest of your life. I suspect the Thorpedo willl be referenced once or twice in these games. Very similar to when Phelps was in his hey day.
The perfect career ender for Phelps will be to claim the gold in the 200 fly. Unless he wins the 100 fly trial, he won't be in a relay. In any case, he is THE premier swimmer and Olympic athlete of all time.
is on pace to unseat Phelps as the best US Swimmer of all time. What she has done is nothing short of amazing and she's pretty much annihilating the field espceially in long distance swimming events.
I have tons of respect for long distance swimmers. I check out mentally even on a 200 free.
She's had a great 4 year run. Phelps has dominated for almost 2 decades.
Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history. He won 6 golds in Athens and then followed that up with 8 golds in Bejing, and then picked up 4 more golds in London.
So sure, Ledecky has been great. But she has 1 Olympic gold so far. When she wins about 6 golds in Rio we can talk about her being "on-pace" for passing Phelps, and even then it would be a long-haul to catch him.
There is a reason why people are talking up on her as the next greatest US Swimmer of all time. She's doing it in long distance and short distance swimming which is far more difficult than what Phelp has done which is difficult all on its own.
Watching Phelps now swim his 200 fly final - if a person was better made for one event, I have not seen it.
I met Phelps in A2 in the summer of 2006 right after he'd come back from the Pan Am games and had smashed every record imaginable. It was a Monday night and Conor O'Neill's was packed with smokers for some Trivia night so we went next door to some wine bar that was literally empty. Only other people at the bar who arrived just after us were Phelps and his buddy. My dad was an All-American swimmer and olympic-level in the 60's and I introduced myself to Phelps and talked quite a while. His hands were like oven mitts and I've never seen a person with broader shoulders. Truly a world class athlete and far more a Wolverine than LeBron is a Buckeye (lol).
Josh Prenot beat the American record tonight in the 200 breast, and he's 16/100th's off the WR...not too shabby.

Heads up: two Wolverines in the 1500 final at Olympic Trials. Connor Jaeger, seeded first, and PJ Ransford, seeded fourth.
Connor Jaeger won the 1500! PJ Ransford finished fourth.
