OT - Mgoblog Saturday Movie Call

Submitted by tennis_labeef on June 26th, 2021 at 9:08 PM

Just got done watching Stand By Me once again. Talk about a great coming of age flick. Any other mgobloggers diving into cinematic genius this cloudy Saturday evening?

Week or so ago watched a movie that went WAY under the radar- Take Shelter.

I have a really stable list of top 10 movies that I didn't think would ever be cracked- this could make it in. It's that good.

I liked Take Shelter ok.  Fantastic acting, but the movie was a bit of a grind.  Spoiler alert, I guess, it's 2 hours of a slow (VERY slow) descent into madness with nothing else really going on.  The twist endings are usually pretty lame, IMO, and this one was no different.

For sure, totally respect your opinion.  Maybe "grind" is too harsh, but I didn't think it needed to be 2 hours plus of the director bludgeoning you with the same theme over and over, very very slowly, and then do the cliche twist ending in the last 5 seconds.  The ending absolutely made you think, like what message was the director trying to send, I just think there are better ways to do that than throw a surprise twist ending at the very end.

Good timing, OP! I just watched two back to back:

The Impossible, based on a true story of a family who survived the 2004 day after Christmas tsunami

Manchester by the Sea, which was well-acted but which I don't think overall was very good.

I'd still recommend both, but they're equally  heavy, so be forewarned.

Hey Vlad...just finished watching the Russian mob in Nobody. I think they were trying to capture the vibe of the first Die Hard with jokes and sight gags scattered amongst blood and gore. All the tropes. Cartoonish bad guys. A preposterously indestructible good guy who also has a sweet family. But it didn't have Die Hard's swagger. Nor did it have Bruce Willis. Bob Odenkirk was fine but he couldn't quite pull of the insouciant avenging angel.

Anything that makes you whole heartedly belly laugh is 100% no over rated. Now if it misses the mark thats another story. While a movie like Tommy Boy hasnt aged as well for me Dumb and Dumber still makes me laugh. Believe it or not but Kingpins humor really holds up well, the jokes just really strike a chord even after all these years.

Roy “shhh!”

Roy “what did i just say?”

Ish “you think you just tore your sack?”

We will just have to agree to disagree.

I smile a lot through Dumb and Dumber, but I am not laughing out loud often. I will absolutely agree with Kingpin; it runs laps around D and D.

And Tommy Boy, IMO, has aged REALLY well. I just watched it the other day on TV and I was laughing like I was when I watched years ago.

Watched In The Heights the other day with some friends. Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but the musical numbers included in the movie are Lin Manuel Miranda’s best writing. Yes, Hamilton is great and what he’s most known for, but songs like “96,000”, “When You’re Home”, and of course the titular “In The Heights” far outshine every single Hamilton track.

I remember reading an MLive article in 2017 about the women’s march, and around the same time was a March for science, because NIH funding was being cut. And there was a photo gallery of the signs at the march. Most cleaver signs I’ve ever seen. Imagine a bunch of PhDs making signs for College Gameday. Anyways, of all these great, creative signs, one stood out. “stop making fast and furious movies.” There have been two more since that sign I think.

anyways, my wife and I watched Good On Paper on Netflix two nights ago. It wasn’t great and wasn’t too funny. I was hoping for it to be a good comedy. Last night, we watched Fatherhood with Kevin Hart. It was emotional, decent movie, and had some small comedic moments.
