Week or so ago watched a movie that went WAY under the radar- Take Shelter.
I have a really stable list of top 10 movies that I didn't think would ever be cracked- this could make it in. It's that good.
That looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Yep! Free on A Prime
Going to watch it. Thanks.
I liked Take Shelter ok. Fantastic acting, but the movie was a bit of a grind. Spoiler alert, I guess, it's 2 hours of a slow (VERY slow) descent into madness with nothing else really going on. The twist endings are usually pretty lame, IMO, and this one was no different.
10.1.1Yeah, fully disagree.
Endings like this one that make me think are the most impactful.
I never once felt like it was a grind.
But to each their own.
For sure, totally respect your opinion. Maybe "grind" is too harsh, but I didn't think it needed to be 2 hours plus of the director bludgeoning you with the same theme over and over, very very slowly, and then do the cliche twist ending in the last 5 seconds. The ending absolutely made you think, like what message was the director trying to send, I just think there are better ways to do that than throw a surprise twist ending at the very end.
Michael Shannon is a VERY underrated actor.
Give me that top ten. I trend sci fi/horror that is off the beaten path mostly.
Watched this a couple days ago, too. I agree, it's a pretty good movie. So -- was he having delusions at the end, or was it real?!?
Good timing, OP! I just watched two back to back:
The Impossible, based on a true story of a family who survived the 2004 day after Christmas tsunami
Manchester by the Sea, which was well-acted but which I don't think overall was very good.
I'd still recommend both, but they're equally heavy, so be forewarned.
No kidding! I just watched The Impossible last night. Can’t go through any 5 minute stretch without a dampening of the eyes
Watched that on Netflix a few months back. Really hard movie to watch. Happy ending for that family specifically, but you just know there were countless others who’s lives were ruined forever in an instant.
Manchester by the Sea
How depressing was it? Been meaning to see it but it looks sad as hell. Have to be in the right mood for those movies.
Truly one of the most heartbreaking movies I’ve ever seen.
Well fuck, I guess I have to see it then. Just have to psyche myself up beforehand.
Just be ready. It's got some too real moments. But it turns out to be worth the watch. Hard to watch at some points.
If you’re a parent, I’d say it’s gutting.
I thought Manchester-by-the-Sea was an excellent movie. Heavy but necessary for that of us that beat ourselves up all the time.
Really wanted to like Manchester by the Sea. Just didn't.
Go away, troll account.
10.1.1Speaking of you, I just watched Hunter Killer. Not realistic, but entertaining; I'll probably watch it again.
*!$@& double posts!!
Hey Vlad...just finished watching the Russian mob in Nobody. I think they were trying to capture the vibe of the first Die Hard with jokes and sight gags scattered amongst blood and gore. All the tropes. Cartoonish bad guys. A preposterously indestructible good guy who also has a sweet family. But it didn't have Die Hard's swagger. Nor did it have Bruce Willis. Bob Odenkirk was fine but he couldn't quite pull of the insouciant avenging angel.
If you want a feel for authentic Russian mob movies, I've heard that Netflix just acquired the rights to Brat and Brat 2. I haven't seen them in the queue yet. But they're coming. Sergei Bodrov was a brilliant actor, whose tragic death was very hard on me personally.
hopefully his death wasn't an "untimely accident" though the loss is no doubt still very tragic
“Go get the provisions you morphodite”
Truman Show with the family, right now. First time for the kids - a moving show and as poignant as ever.
Hot take- that's Carrey's best movie.
Dumb and dumber would like a word.
(deep breath)
Dumb and Dumber is overrated.
(runs away)
Anything that makes you whole heartedly belly laugh is 100% no over rated. Now if it misses the mark thats another story. While a movie like Tommy Boy hasnt aged as well for me Dumb and Dumber still makes me laugh. Believe it or not but Kingpins humor really holds up well, the jokes just really strike a chord even after all these years.
Roy “shhh!”
Roy “Oh i think i just tore my sack”
Ish ”you ok mr munson?”
Roy “what did i just say?”
Ish “you think you just tore your sack?”
come on fellas seriously
We will just have to agree to disagree.
I smile a lot through Dumb and Dumber, but I am not laughing out loud often. I will absolutely agree with Kingpin; it runs laps around D and D.
And Tommy Boy, IMO, has aged REALLY well. I just watched it the other day on TV and I was laughing like I was when I watched years ago.
Well, it's definitely Vanessa Angel's best move by a mile.
Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind is Carreys best movie
And, pretty much, everyone who's in it ... 's. Damn. I can't figure out where to put the apostrophe (and I was an English major -- hah!). I mean, the best movie of everyone who is in it. Maybe hyphens: "And, pretty much, everyone-who's-in-it's"? Hmm.
Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar take issue there.
I can see Liar Liar being on that level- I love that movie.
Bruce Almighty? Meh. It's OK.
Dumb and Dumber is legendary. Liar Liar is very good. I will also say Ace Ventura 2 is a tour de force Jim Carey performance. Peanuts?
Not a movie, but if you haven't checked out Formula 1 on Netflix, it is simply awesome. Highly recommended.
Val Kilmer should've garnered oscar consideration for Tombstone.
Oscar win* fixed it for you
Boogie Nights is the best movie I've watched in a while.
The Nice Guys is also absolutely hilarious and probably the best movie currently on HBO.
Watched In The Heights the other day with some friends. Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but the musical numbers included in the movie are Lin Manuel Miranda’s best writing. Yes, Hamilton is great and what he’s most known for, but songs like “96,000”, “When You’re Home”, and of course the titular “In The Heights” far outshine every single Hamilton track.
Just got out of the theatre for F9. It was refreshing.
I remember reading an MLive article in 2017 about the women’s march, and around the same time was a March for science, because NIH funding was being cut. And there was a photo gallery of the signs at the march. Most cleaver signs I’ve ever seen. Imagine a bunch of PhDs making signs for College Gameday. Anyways, of all these great, creative signs, one stood out. “stop making fast and furious movies.” There have been two more since that sign I think.
anyways, my wife and I watched Good On Paper on Netflix two nights ago. It wasn’t great and wasn’t too funny. I was hoping for it to be a good comedy. Last night, we watched Fatherhood with Kevin Hart. It was emotional, decent movie, and had some small comedic moments.
You taught me how to love a woman and how to scold a child.
Not tonight, but I watched Hereditary last night. That is how horror is supposed to be done.
