1 year for $2.75 million. Wow, what a day for the Blackhawks.

Madden is on the last leg of his career. He is not the great defensive and adequate offensive player he used to be. Solid pickup, but nothing spectacular.

This is a poor pick up in my opinion. Madden was a -7 on a strong defensively minded New Jersey team last year (2nd worst on team). He barely eclipsed the 20 point mark last season. Perspective: Mike Knuble was a +5 with 27G and 20A and he signed for 2.8 M/yr. Bill Geurin had 21G and 27A last year and he signed for 2.0 M/yr. Guerin's +/- on the season is low, but he was with the Islanders for most of it so that's expected. I know they're wingers, but they're of comparable age and salary to Madden Chicago overpaid for Madden. Where does he fit in anyway? 3rd line center probably behind Toews and Bolland, but 2.75 is steep for a 3rd line center, at least at the skill level of Madden.

Amen to that. As a fellow Hawks fan I'm mighty encouraged by today's work by Tallon, but goaltender remains an issue. Maybe Crawford or Niemi steps up as a capable alternative, but I wouldn't count on it for this year. Also, I'm a bit curious to see what they'll do with the numerous restricted free agents like Barker, Versteeg, Fraser, etc. They already locked up Bolland, which is big, but I'm hoping they can hold onto most of those guys.

Given the number of contracts coming open among players like Toews and Kane, and given Hossa's signing, it is clear that Dale Tallon is spending the farm to win next year. They will be good, but they need goaltending help, and they have to know that teams like LA and Minnesota will be offering huge dollars to their free agents in the next couple of years.

As a diehard Devils fan, I'm sad to see him go, but it's for the best. In years past Madden's line would always be put up against the opposing team's top line, but Sutter initiated a change to a less reactionary / more offensive style that saw Madden relegated to fewer and fewer minutes. And Madden used to be good for decent offensive production, but that well has long since dried up. Good pick up for the Hawks but I think the Devils were right to let him walk. Losing Gionta stings a bit more. After his performance last year I dont think he warrants the $5M/year Montreal threw at him, but still he was at one point a 50 goal scorer. I always kind of hoped he'd find that spark again.
