Cable channels can say/do anything. The FCC only deals with over-the-air broadcasts for both TV and radio. The only limitations are self-imposed in order to attract and maintain advertising revenue.

According to the Internetz, this ran in Nashville's paper and after key recruits followed Franklin to Penn State, so I have an inkling that today's paper is going to be used largely as kindling to start some fireplace fires when the next blast of cold air comes to the Eastern US in the middle of next week. One commenter on SI had this to say:
"Maybe he can get Penn State to schedule temas like Elon, Presbyterian and Austin Peay like he did at Vanderbilt so he can rack up meaningless wins there too."

Yeah, the Vandy "miracle" turnaround doesn't look quite as incredible when you look at how soft their schedules were.

If the SEC East weren't down and he weren't playing the likes of Elon out of conference, he'd still be in Vandy right now, probably with a .500 or so record. He went something like 2-11 against winning SEC teams.
I think he was a decent hire but I'm not convinced he's an upgrade over Bill O'Brien, which you seem to be implying.

There is validity to both sides here. Winning at Vandy has proven historically very difficult. At the same time, to have both Florida and Tennessee down (when was the last time both posted losing records in the same season?) was certainly helpful to their cause. I don't see a lot of signature wins on his résumé. Maybe they'll come - we'll see.

If he would've paid for it by himself. That's sort of the point of the outrage, that PSU paid for it; a point that is made in the title.

Also, Franklin just raided the crap out of Vandy's recruiting class. That's not unusual for a coach changing jobs, of course, but makes this gesture rather dickish - "Yeah, it's been swell, but now I have ALL OF THE RECRUITS! Good for me! Sucks for you!"

Dick move to have PSU pay for the ad, but Vandy is not a poor family. With less than a third of the number of students, their endowment is double PSU's endowment.

I get it.
I travel to Nashville often and stay by the campus, a veritable botanical garden in the heart of a modern southern city.
Vandy has just built a very nice new field house partially due to Franklin's success. Their stadium is a joke...just not what you would expect in most major colleges. On every other level, except for their history in football, the school has a lot to offer. Great academics, drop dead gorgeous campus located in a fun city (a hell of a lot more going on in Nashville than the cow pasture that is State College) and a member of a top notch football conference. Then there are all those southern hotties sipping mint juleps under those magnolia trees.
If they can get the right coach and want to spend some money, there is really no reason why they couldn't be competiive with at least mid-level SEC teams.

What is the problem? It was obviously Franklin who got PSU to pay for this. He may have even included it in the job negotiations. I am not a Franklin fan, but my guess is that he is actually grateful to the Vanderbuilt community, and props to him for getting his new employer to pay the cost of letting them know.

Playing devil's advocate, I don't understand all the outrage at PSU. Why isn't Notre Dame sanctioned for killing a kid? Why isn't USC sanctioned for OJ Simpson's life decisions? If you're going to do it for one school, then you should do it for all the other schools. I hate PSU with a passion too.

The USC analogy is a huge reach - OJ's crimes happened decades after he left school. Should we be vilified for the Unabomber?
The ND thing is closer, but still, it seems pretty clear that it was a horrible accident.
PSU knew about Sandusky and continued to give him access to the program, which is unbelievable. They deserve every bit of the criticism headed their way. I don't think they've gotten enough. Their fanbase certainly isn't very remorseful.

We know about more than a half dozen who knew. Two janitors, their supervisor, McQueary. If they were afraid to speak up, why should we think they were the only ones who didn't? They witnessed or were aware of incidents from 1998-2002. Sandusky was there his entire adult life. I'd be shocked if there weren't more witnesses, plus many more people who had some idea of what he was doing, including more than just the four who were above him.

Rape culture in college football and how it is sometimes covered up to protect talented players is indeed shameful. Penn State, though, knowingly allowed the systematic molestation of children to continue for years. We should not allow our unforgivable tolerance of the former to blind us to the horror of the latter and prevent us from punishing the perpretrators and I am truly sorry if you do not understand this.
