OT: Iowa hosting outdoor wrestling meet at Kinnick Stadium on Sat.
Gonna be 57 degrees with 12 mph winds for the first-ever outdoor NCAA Wrestling dual meet on Saturday.
#4 Iowa will host #1 Oklahoma State on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in attempt to break the all-time NCAA attendance record a dual meet.
Gonna be some diamond-like hard nipples out there.
So far they've sold 34,000 tickets.

Meanwhile, Michigan is ranked #3 in the country. Gonna be a big time season for the Wolverines.

Good strategy as they're playing Minnesota at 8pm in football.

Yeah. It's a doubleheader.

People are pretty stoked for this meet in these parts. Should be a fun experience up at Kinnick.
November 11th, 2015 at 7:58 AM ^
It's Iowa fergodsakes. They don't need a reason to be stoked.

Maybe if it gets cold enough the wrestlers will wear masks

As a Hawkeye grad, the one thing I learned from my time in Iowa is that they love them some wrestling.
This is pretty much the most Iowa thing ever.

That's actually pretty cool idea as a double header. Luckily the weather isn't too cold yet.

Still though, I will never forget how impressed I was to see Iowa pack out their basketball arena for a meet with Penn State a few years back. I had no clue they cared about wrestling so much over there. Easily one of the coolest non-revenue sport events I've ever seen (though maybe wrestling is a revenue sport in Iowa...)

I haven't seen the stats but I imagine Iowa has the most NCAA wrestling championships. Perennial powerhouse.
And how is Michigan ranked #3? Did anybody besides Coon place last year?
November 10th, 2015 at 10:47 PM ^
.........A TON of guys are coming back from a team that had its best NCAA finish in years.

Iowa and Oklahoma. It's easier to name teams that have won not from those states.
Indiana - 1932
Cornell - 1947
Penn State - 1953, 2011-2014
Michigan State - 1967
Arizona St - 1988
Minnesota - 2001, 2002, 2007
Ohio State - 2015
Oklahoma State has won 31 times, Iowa has won 23, Iowa State has won 8, Oklahoma has won 7 (zero since '74). UNI also won in 1950.

ASU has a fairly rich wrestling tradition. One of the most notable wrestling alumni is Dan Severn .
When ASU won the 1988 National Championship, they were coached by a guy named Bobby Douglas who had something like nine or ten top ten finishes in the NCAAs in his 18 years there. He later coached U.S. Olympians and at Iowa State, including Cael Sanderson.
He was also the first black state title winner in Ohio and one of the few people to beat Dan Gable.

but beat MSU in the duel meet at Yost when Dave "Baby Hughy" Porter pinned at HWT in the last match!

125 - 5th - Youtsey (lost 5th place match last year in NCAA)
133 - 6th - Bruno (lost 7th place match last year in NCAA)
142 - No top 20
149 - 11th - Pantaleo (didn't place)
157 - 4th - Murphy (won 7th place match last year in NCAA)
165 - 18th - Sutton (didn't place)
174 - 11th - Mahomes (injured mid-year last year)
184 - 13th - Abounder (didn't place)
197 - 5th - Huntley (lost 7th place match in NCAA)
Hwt - 3rd - Coon (finished 2nd last year in NCAA)
So outside Coon, they don't have a lot of really highly ranked guys. But besides at 142, they have solid guys everywhere. That prevents a lot of the big losses in certain matches, and gives them a shot in almost every match, which is a recipe for probably a lot of close wins.

B1G is always going to be loaded, but this is crazy.
- #2 Penn State (1 first place vote)
- #3 Michigan (1 first place vote)
- #4 Iowa
- #5 Ohio State
- #10 Nebraska
- #11 Illinois
- #14 Wisconsin
- #16 Minnesota
- #17 Rutgers

Do we still have that kid that was the #1 ranked recruit? Massa I think? I know he hadn't lived up to the hype but maybe he can turn it around.
November 11th, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
Michigan has a freshman Logan Massa who could beat out Sutton at 165
November 11th, 2015 at 1:42 PM ^
It's 141 pounds, not 142.
This years team is solid top to bottom. I'll be heading to CK for their home opener next Sunday Nov. 22nd. If you have never been to one you should go check it out. They go against Oklahoma on the 22nd who is not very good this year. (ranked #20 per FloWrestling which I think has the best rankings). The match of the night will be at 133 when Rossi Bruno (#8 @ 133) goes up against Cody Brewer (#1 @ 133).

I wouldn't be surprised if wrestling was a revenue sport for Iowa. They pack in the people for their home meets.
For a little background, Iowa won the NCAA title all but once from 1975-1986 (except 1977). They then all but once from 1991-2000 (except 1994). They then won from 2008-2010. They've won 23 NCAA championships. They also won the Big Ten every year from 1974-1998.
With all that said, wrestling, with the way they hand out scholarships, isn't an overly expensive sport.

It was a mess. We had incredible seats (thank you guy who's parents are in the Kinnick Club or whatever it's called), and I nearly got pummelled by a bunch of respectable Iowa fans when we got a pick-six at the beginning of the game. The Hawkeye fans were mesmerized by the Space Emperor too, but we couldn't stop friggin' Tony Moeaki. Then we lost :(
