OT: I'm customizing my golf balls with M artwork - need help

Submitted by leftrare on

I was in a golf proshop recently and saw a display of these golf ball marking gadgets called Tin Cup.

It's a simple idea.  It's a steel cup that you snap onto a ball and then use a sharpie to fill in a cutout in the steel.  They offer the opportunity to customize your cutout template and my immediate thought was an iconic rendition of the maize helmet wings.  (I'd buy a sharpie in the closest available color to maize.)

They want $40-60 to do a custom cut.  (If they were smart, they would already be all over this idea of sports logos; maybe they don't want to hassle with licensing issues.)

Anyway, I'll pay the premium because this just seems too cool to pass on.  Shit, a good dozen balls can cost over $50 -- why not dress them up?

Could someone point me somewhere that I can cut and paste some artwork?

Great idea.  I can't believe M Den doesn't have this going already.  You probably will  (or Tin Cup will)  encounter some licensing issues regarding Michigan artwork but good luck and pass it on to M Den.

But if you're paying $50 for a dozen golf balls, then you're either too good to be doing it casually or you're paying way too much for golf balls.

I recommend investing in a ball retriever. With one of those you will probably come away with more balls than you entered with, and some of those balls that cost $50/dozen aren't too uncommon among them.

you pay 50 bucks for 12 balls? wow, hope those have rocket engines on them.

really though, i would just trace a sketch based on a picture of the winged helmet. Maybe even ask if they know the winged helmet (which they probably should) and see if they could do the job, or if you need to sketch it out for them first

looking at that website, it seems too good to be true that they would do such a cut. the cutouts on the site are tiny, and i think what you want is a fully covered ball with the helmet design on it right? I don't think it would work the way theyre doing it.

For that kind of money though, you could be making your own tin cup or just skipping the cup and using a sharpie without it. Hell, for half that price I'll make them look spectacular with just a couple sharpies

Yes, I'll be able to keep the tin cup and the company will then have a template ready-made for other M fans, but I don't think they'll feature it, unfortunately.  If you look on the site, you don't see anything that looks exactly like a team logo.
