OT: Hulu dropping Fox RSNs; Should I care?

Submitted by Swayze Howell Sheen on October 22nd, 2020 at 6:53 PM

Hey all -

Sorry for the dumb post, but Hulu Live (which I use) is dropping Fox Sports Regional Sports networks. Can somebody who is up on this crap tell me if I should care about this?

Thank you!

Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and the regional Fox Sports Regional Networks but not Fox the network nor Fox Sports/FS1/FS2. As a condition of the deal, however, they then sold the Fox Sports Networks to Sinclair Broadcasting and Entertainment Studios. All that happened last year. They have a deal to keep the "Fox Sports Networks" name until they can figure out a rebrand.

So if you want to blame anyone for the regional networks falling off the streaming sites, I'd look first at Sinclair and Entertainment Studios.

A big part of what’s going on here is market power. Disney and Fox have a lot of negotiating leverage with the cable and cord-cutting companies because they own so many channels. Disney can say, “if you don’t take my price hike for Fox Detroit, we’ll pull ESPN.” Sinclair, which I believe is mainly a roll up of local TV networks, does not have the same leverage, because people can get local networks with their over-the-air antennas. So, basically, Sinclair miscalculated in thinking it could charge the same prices as Fox or Disney.

Not really sure what it means but if theres local games on FOX Sports you may not get them possibly only the national Fox coverages that everyone can get anywhere in the country

What it means is that cord cutters are basically out of luck for most Fox RSN's (legally anyway). You will have to go back to DTV or Cable for a lot of local sports. Dish dropped the a while back as well.

No fox sports Detroit.  Tigers are the worst team in baseball.  Wings are worst team in the NHL.  not a big loss since those are their two big draws.  Will miss their televising the high school football finals.  Other than that....?

Literally just switched this month because YouTube TV dropped them too. Was already thinking about it anyway since they had jacked the price up and decided to give Hulu a whirl since it came with a regular Hulu subscription included, but the whole goal in having Live TV anything is sports, so no price is worth it without FSD.

At least I'll be able to take advantage of it for Archer for the length of time I had it, but I think with PS Vue dead, its back to Comcast or nothing now...

I'll drop Hulu Live by the first of the year so I can watch the Red Wings. I know they are not a good team right now by I still like to watch every game I can.

I dropped Sling when they lost the RSNs.  I dropped Hulu because I hated their UI.  I dropped Youtube when they lost the RSNs, guess a return to Hulu ain't happening either. I'll just stream from now on; done being at the mercy of these companies just to watch a ballgame.

Fox regional has no leverage and the streaming services can save a few bucks while no games are on. They’ll be back in January. I wouldn’t switch because of it at this point.

I’m honestly trying to figure out why this matters to ANYONE? It’s not like you can’t get ALL of the Wings, Pistons, and Tigers games by just buying the respective league’s packages standalone. The only thing it really means is that you can’t get local RSN programming that wraps around the games.

As long as Hulu keeps the B1G network, I will not jump ship but once they do. Plus all my local fox sports network shows are the Royals, Soccer and Thunder games.
