OT: Home Run Derby inequality
Am I the only one who thinks the pitcher makes a huge difference in the home run derby results? J Rod had the best pitcher by far. Not that he wasn't also the best hitter, but it seems like the pitcher-batter team is the winner, not just the batter. Some of the pitchers seemed to meditate between tosses.
Had fun watching the derby with my son. Regarding the other stuff I guess that was an interesting take 25 years ago.
"Interleague play is an abomination" is the sports hill I will absolutely die on.
Fucking Bud Selig.
We just need football season to get here already. Waiting for the spray charts of pitches, broken down by batter, round-by-round, to pop up in the diaries section complete with in-depth statistical analysis of which batter was actually the most prolific according to a new metric created by the OP.
Geez, what a bunch of grumps. Nothing is more evergreen than being mad about other people enjoying sports differently than you do, I guess.
Well, your opinion is wrong.
Don't forget that the purpose of watching sports is not only for seeing impressive feats and winning or losing.
Watching sports just as much provides something to talk about, argue about, whine about, rejoice about, long after any particular game is over.
E.g., 42-27
I haven't watched Home Run Derby in years. Probably not since McGwire, Sosa and Griffey were out there.
I don't have any personal stink with the game, but it just doesn't have the same allure for me that it used to. Its a nice distraction during the summer when nothing else of real note is on (no, I'm not a golf or tennis fan, either), and I might pop my head in during October for postseason ball, particularly if there's a good series going on, but otherwise I just can't get very excited about it.
My family is a huge baseball family. I watched the Derby last night with my youngest son and it was absolutely boring as hell, just like it always is.
I love the MLB All-Star game though and look forward to watching that tonight. That rarely disappoints.
Berman not calling it is a huge improvement. I normally don't pay it much attention but being a Mariners fan had me following Julio last night.
I'm not understanding the goal of this post. Hitters can bring whoever they want to pitch to them, it's not like they are assigned. So any inequality is choice based.
This is like saying you lost a car race because you brought a slower car, well, yeah.....

While this thread slowly goes off the rails debating dad pitching prowess, did anybody else used to watch these as a kid? No idea what station used to play them in the late 80s, but I used to love watching them.
We want more NIL posts!!!😂
So, do you want the pitchers, which are selected by the players involved, to throw nothing but eephus pitches or something? It sounds fairly challenging and could be an equalizer, if a bit silly.
I love seeing the dads pitch. But in a timed format the great moment for Seagar and his dad had no chance of being competitive. Perhaps giving every batter 30 swings or some such thing would give the dads a better chance of not handicapping the sons.
We need home run derby equity. Everyone should get the same number of homeruns. I'm tired of watching some batters not do as well. We need universal basic pitches and free access to pitches down the middle.
Well, sort of. It's not an actual baseball game. The point is to see which batter can hit the most homeruns given the same conditions as the others. It's a silly contest, sure. But it seems a shame to penalize batters who make a sentimental choice of pitchers.
J-Rod hit 81 HR’s on the night Soto 53 enough said!
I say the home run derby is fun. It's one meaningless night. Why would anyone get upset over it?
It's fun to see how the best hitters in the world can just pump homers into the crowd. If you ever watched that video where the regular guy trains forever just to hit ONE MLB stadium home run during batting practice, you know how hard it is. These guys make it look trivial.
I agree that the pitcher has a huge impact on this. Obviously, you bring your own pitcher to the event. Even though Soto won all of his matchups by one HR, his pitcher was driving me nuts all night. He threw way too many pitches on the outer half of the plate, which makes it harder to pull the ball.
seems hella tiring we well
