This sucks for buffalo, all of the intentional losing they went through...
They still land Eichel, not a bad consolation prize.
Jack Eichel
Buffalo always gets rolled, it's the it's where sports fans go to suffer endlessly. One thing I know, if the sabres ever win the cup, or the bills ever win the super bowl, the celebration would be so massive the entire city would burn to the ground. People thought the saints celebration was big, buffalo would low them out of the water, too bad we'll never get to see it.

You think that'd be bad. Imagine what'll happen if the Cubbies ever manage to break the curse. The north side will blow up like a damn supernova.

The Hip are playing in Buffalo tonight. That will ease the pain a bit.
April 18th, 2015 at 10:28 PM ^
The way the lottery is they were never even likely to get the first pick. They tanked to lock themselves into a top 2 pick which they were successful in doing

Edmonton....where number one picks go to die....some have individual success, but why anyone would want to play for that front office is beyond me. Worst in the NHL by far.

At least we know it's not rigged!
When Shanahan was being interviewed on CBC, I thought the Leafs would end up getting the pick. Arizona was the team that really needed McDavid, he could have been their savior.
April 18th, 2015 at 10:29 PM ^
If they tank next year they can land Austin Matthews, an AZ-born player who's widely considered to be a potential #1 pick.
Did the Nhl always have a lottery?
I logged on just to say I had no idea the NHL had a lottery.
I logged on just to say I had no idea that Edmonton had a team

I logged on just to say this
I logged on again just to post a gratuitous response to your gratuitous response.
I'm just here so I don't get fined.

Well that's garbage but at least the Wings won't have to play him 4x a year, plus playoffs.
Exorcise all the 80s Oilers from the front office, hire a strong coach, and sit back and enjoy the ride. But, hey, at least the Leafs didn't win.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:51 AM ^
Under Nelson was noticeable. I say give him a shot he's a proven winner at every level so far.
And I thought Cleveland had annoying string of wasted first overall draft picks. Good luck to whomever they select; that team is a hot mess right now and doesn't look to be getting much better any time soon.
April 18th, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
Another moron looking to get points by ripping on an Ohio city. Wasted number one picks? Oh you mean Bennett? Yep one pick was wasted. The others were Lebron, Kyrie and then Bennett and Wiggens turned into Kevin Love. Yea really wasted them.
Crawl back in your hole dick wad

Tim Couch?
April 19th, 2015 at 12:53 PM ^

Guess my reading comprehension is off. I read first overall not first round. Wait you morons can't read, so my point was on
April 18th, 2015 at 10:55 PM ^
there are a couple can't miss guys in this year's draft.
April 18th, 2015 at 11:55 PM ^
The Browns drafted Stockar McDougle, Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Ernie Sims, Gosder Cherilus, Riley Reiff, Ezekiel Ansah, Eric Ebron?
You think Ansah was a wasted pick? Lions got him at #5, I believe in Grantland's 2013 "re-draft" a few months back they had him at #2.
April 19th, 2015 at 10:25 AM ^
lately I think the Lions have improved their draft picking, hopefully they can keep it up.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:51 AM ^
Old management??? Mayhew says the exact same things Millen did. How is Ebron management getting better???
April 19th, 2015 at 12:54 PM ^
Lions made the playoff twice in last 4 years. Mayhew is so much better than Millen. Saying he's the same as Millen is laughable considering Millen ran the franchise into the ground into 0-16
Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad
You need to start dealing in FACTS rather than emotion.
Mayhew says the same draft day stuff as Millen -- meaning taking what they think is the best player on the board rather than filling a need. Face it, Ebron was a wasted pick.
Mayhew is a fucking disaster when it comes to contracts. Under him, the Lions have regularly had the most dead money in the league. That goes back to BEFORE Suh too!!!!
I don't blame Mayhew necessarily though; it's the Fords. Before Mayhew was Millen, before Millen was Thomas -- it's all the same shit but different toilet.
with emotions, not FACTS. Lions were in bad contract situation because they hit on Stafford, Suh and Calvin before the new CBA. They had to take on massive rookie contract and extend both Stafford and Calvin because they're critical to Lions long term plans.
Go find a new team
Troll on clown. It's clear you don't understand what dead money means.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:50 PM ^
Mayhew is just as bad as Millen? Are you fucking joking? Mayhew at least got the Lions to the playoff twice. Millen was remotely nowhere near it and ran the franchise into the ground, leading them to 0-16.
Dead money comes off the book after 2015 season and there will be cap increase so Lions have more flexibility to do what they want to do especially when you consider they have to extend Ziggy, Slay, Warford and Levy into a big contract.
The fact you said that Ziggy is a bust is a joke all by itself.
Edmonton has done ok with first round picks (in terms of individual play). It's everything round 2 and later that's awful.
April 18th, 2015 at 10:36 PM ^
Not really... Yakupov was healthy scratched a few times this year. Hall has the most potential but can't put it together with any of his centers. Nugent Hopkins I guess was an all-star this year, but his production is poor for a #1 overall player.
The best young guy they have on their roster is Eberle and they landed him when they weren't awful.
April 18th, 2015 at 11:46 PM ^
Yea, but I'd still take Hall and Eberle as first rounders. Nugent-Hopkins hasn't been great for a #1 overall but is still a pretty good player. I think you'd take those three as a good foundation. The bigger problem is those are the only decent players they've gotten out of the draft. If you not only can't find gems past round one but can't even find NHL caliber players, you're going to be in trouble.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:39 AM ^
Ding ding ding we have a a winner!
April 18th, 2015 at 11:55 PM ^
if your league has to have a lottery, then your league has a fundamental problem...
we all know the NBA is a joke as teams begin tanking in december, but now the NHL has one too?
I think teams should lose their first round draft picks if they tank.
jdon
April 19th, 2015 at 10:10 AM ^
But then how is it determined who is tanking, and who is just that bad? I mean look at Buffalo's roster. I think an AHL team could beat them.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:38 AM ^
They aren't quite that bad but it's a lot if kids that'd be in the AHL in other systems. But it's goalie that's their real issue
April 19th, 2015 at 12:12 AM ^
There was a great answer to this I saw somewhere...
Once a team is eliminated... Their point total is added up and the highest points get #1 pick.
Teams can't tank. Yet if they are bad, they will have more games to stack up the points than a team that just misses out.
Assume it could work in NBA as well, by counting wins after elimination.

If that had happened this year Edmonton still would have got the number 1 pick.
Fuck Edmonton, man. I used to want them to get better but screw them. Anything they win is just totally unearned. They have had so many high picks that they should be littered with elite talent, but they're garbage. No love for that organization.
April 19th, 2015 at 11:36 AM ^
Hall, RNH, and Yakupov are all elite talents. It's just just the secondary score son a good day are at best a poor mans Darren helm but with crappy D responsibility.
They have less than stellar goaltending and their D core(due to management not picking D) is way below average. Those kids would have been sick anywhere else, they have no help. The talent is their the mix is not. Not even close
Yakupov had the same amount of points as Helm this year (33). Taylor Hall wasn't far ahead (38). Those are decent numbers, but more like half way to elite. How about Magnus Paajarvi, and Sam Gagner? Because those are 2 more top 10 forward picks in the last decade.
Maybe they should get a solid goaltender like Dubnyk. He seems to be flourishing in Minnesota.
To their support. Well more than you at least. But the funniest part is Dubnyk was an oiler for a while and now look lol
