OT: Did you have to spend the Holidays with family/friends that are rival fans?

Submitted by cGOBLUEm on
It's Christmas night and things are pretty slow on the MGoBoard. I thought I'd share my Holiday experience with a rival family member (OSU), and see if you guys have to deal with similar things during your family gatherings. It was Christmas Eve with my wifes side of the family, and as soon as I walked through the door I hear her cousin who is a Buckeye fan carrying on and on: -"No way is Harbaugh coming to Michigan. You guys are dreaming." -"Michigan will never be good again." -"We own you guys." (this is one of my favorites because he always uses the word "we" as if he has some sort of affiliation with Ohio State other than being just another random idiot fan) -"I'm going to buy tickets to the National Championship." (as if it's a done deal and Alabama is just a formality on the road to Arlington) All of this was said, of course, with extreme arrogance. This was just one Buckeye among numerous Michigan fans and a half dozen Michigan grads. He was insufferable all night. I'm sure that many of you had experiences much more intollerable than mine. I've read some people on the Board live in Columbus and are constantly surrounded by OSU fans. So, what was your Christmas like? Did you have to banter back and forth with the Buckeyes, Sparties, or Irish?

I spent it with my cousin who is a current OSU student. However, he doesn't like the football team and has only been to a couple games in his entire time there.

Very little talk about sports. My grandpa asked who Michigan is hiring. The family members who read this blog said Harbaugh. My dad said no way based on what his dentist said.

Nope, our immediate family is all Michigan. My husband's extended family had some Spartan fans but we see them at 4th of July now, not Christmas. No Buckeyes anywhere in our families. Thank goodness!

We had a nice discussion about renewing our tickets, Harbaugh, and the future.

I live in columbus but I traveled back home for the holidays and my immediate family doesn't have a strong interest either way. The girlfriends family and parents though are from columbus so going to their family gatherings around the holidays is hell.

I spent Christmas in Ann Arbor with my 100% blue-blooded Michigan family. Though the only thing we discussed about sports at all was one comment about "Hey, do you want to get together and watch Michigan on the 1st? Oh, that's right..." and then the one "So, Tuesday, eh?"

Unless I have non-relations over (I do have Spartan, Buckeye, Irish, etc... friends), then this is never really an issue for me. My family is all Michigan and my wife's family is not really into sports, so my wife's family will basically just sit there and listen to my family bitch about the season and talk about how nice it would be to land Jim Harbaugh. I should say that this is in fact what has happened in fits and spurts from last Friday to earlier today.

I live in 99% Buckeye ville and just came from a Christmas party.  Good people and even though they are as die hard Buckeye as you can get they've repeatedly made the comment that Ohio and the Big Ten is only good and recognized when both Ohio and Michigan are good and dominant for the conference as the Big Ten is typically only recognized and signifcant whey they're both good.  They didn't mind the potential Harbaugh hire for the above reason.

would be dangerous business at one of our family gatherings.  five generations of michigan grads, a few of us played contact sports there, and none of us are shy.   my mgobride's family are out west and generally support michigan b/c of their affinity for me (go figure).

worst comes to worst i send my 5 sons after the trash talker and he'll be a bit busy after that...

Visiitng my elderly father in Florida and he was wearing a Michigan sweatshirt while we were sitting outside at a restaurant. An older couple in their 60's wearing matching Michigan State sweatshirts walked by our table and said something to the effect of "Michigan sucks" and then chuckled as they passed. Pretty low moment for Sparty.

I live in Ohio, so every trip home from school (especially Thanksgiving leading up to the game) is amusing. When I'm home I rarely leave the house without sporting some sort of Michigan apparel
