I'm curious what sort of deal the Pistons will negotiate.  They're walking away from an arena they own (well, Gores owns it, but same difference) to share a new one.  I don't know how that works financially for them.

I do think it will be nice for the city to have the Pistons, at any rate.

I read a DetNews article last year that the Piston's home attendance droped 30  percent over the past 10 years with an average filled capacity of 70% percent. The drop the the largest in a 10 year span for any of the 4 major professional sports behind even the lowly Sixers.  This was on the heels of a champoinship run in 2004/5 but there was still a drop.

Will amove to Detroit help?  I think it will go in the other direction and Gores is probably just angling for a staidum deal down the road. Only thing which supports abandoning a perfectly good venue.

It should be noted that the Palace is one of the largest arenas in the NBA (capacity around 22,000), so figures for the percent full can be a bit deceptive.

The Pistons will most likely see a short-term spike in attendance simply due to the novelty of a new arena.  In the long run it probably won't make a big difference.  They'll get more fans from Wayne/Washtenaw than before, and fewer from Oakland/Macomb.

I think this is awesome. Never been a huge Pistons fan, even growing up in the Detroit area--they always felt alike they were on the edge of the solar system playing in Auburn Hills. This feels right.

As a former season ticket holder, I think that it's a bad move as there is alot of supporters in Oakland county that will not put their lives in danger going down to Detroit. In addition to the team not having any superstar draw, the arena will never be full.

Auburn Hills and this area surrounding it to be so far away from civilization

Then again, growing up in Northville I only came out this way to ski Mount Holly - but while this area of Oakland County can be pricey it is awesome out here in Timbuktu - sad to see you go Pistons

somehow the governments of Mich and USA can get together and straighten out I-75 thru downtown detroit.  There is no frigging way there should be a 25mph hairpin curve in a major interstate.  Bust down some decrepit shit and make it possible to get thru downtown in a timely manner.
