I know a lot of people were tired of the Mariano Rivera farewell that lasted 3 months, but damn it must be nice to expect your closer to not fuck it all up in the post season

Edit: as I type...we win!!!!!!!!

Half of me believes Leyland was never comfortable not pitching Verlander in Game 1, but the season Scherzer had and public pressure wouldn't let him. He was much quicker to go to Scherzer tonight because in his heart he always wanted jv to pitch a potential Game 5. Honestly if i'm Max I might be pissed.

I think you had it right, exactly, in your original post. Leyland was only too happy to go to Scherzer tonight (well, second best to Fister being lights-out), so he can go to JV Thursday night w/o damage to anyone's ego or any drama. Was point of putting JV #2 ahead of Sanchez, who had the better year also. I really don't get the folks around here who want Leyland gone. Guy's amazingly baseball smart, just one fantastic coach, IMHO.

That was one game. He's had flashes this year, but has been very inconsistent. He just hasn't had nearly the same kind of season as Max. He's capable of a big performance, i'm just saying your chances are better with Scherzer right now.

talks how many times all year about using closers in non-closing situations?  Then he uses him in a non save situation.  I don' t get this guy sometimes.

I think that's the problem. He'd gone to most of his other ready bullpen in the last game, hadn't he? Could have brought one of them back out, but he's said he doesn't like to do that either. & I think he's consistently gone with pitching the closer for > 3 outs when forced to choose b/w the two rules he doesn't like to break
