OT: David Wilson's career is over

Submitted by Ron Utah on

Tragically, David Wilson's promising NFL career is over before his third season even starts.  But this young man's attitude and perspective are sure to carry him to success in other pursuits.  This is one of the best quotes I have ever read, not just from an athlete, but from anyone:

"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me or pity me," he said in the team's release. "I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too."

I was always a big fan of his since he was in high school. His class was when I first started following recruiting and I always wished he went to Michigan. Best of luck to him in the future, it really sucks what happened.

But he did do a lot with what his OL gave him against that Michigan DL. He also made Kovacs miss an open field tackle, meaning his potential was obviously sky high.

FWIW, I love his attitude toward having to give up football. It sucks for anyone to have to give up on their dream. But like he said, he lived his. Hopefully he can find fulfillment in the next chapters of his life and move forward with this same attitude.

I met David a year ago. I told him I'm a big Michigan fan and asked him about the Sugar Bowl. He only smiled and said, "yeah I wished we'd won that game." He had a great senior season though at Va. Tech. He seems like sharp guy and I wish him the best.

Man, there is no way I would attempt to play RB in the NFL after having a cervical spinal fusion, with a spinal stenosis to boot.  I'm actually glad he didn't get to play again, because that could have gotten ugly.

I have cervical stenosis, and had to go through the same evaluations with the same outcome. Not many can imagine the range of emotions that goes through ones mind when this happens. I was unlikely to ever sniff an NFL locker room, but the sport I played and loved for 15 years of my life was now a memory. As many know, to play football at a high level, most have an attitude that it won't happen to me. When facing this, at least to me, was the first time I contemplated my own physical mortality. (my only serious injuries were continuous stingers) I can truly empathize with this young man, I hope he finds the next thing that he can live with the same enthusiasm.

"I'm thankful that I can literally walk away from the game and that I am healthy and capable of doing the same things I have done all my life, except play football," Wilson said.

I rather liked this quote here because it shows you (again, in the case of the article) just how well-rounded Wilson's perspective is and that he knows that there are so many things he can still yet do and hopefully will do. I imagine no one is more disappointed than Wilson himself, but as he mentions he played out the alternatives in his mind and like he said in the OP's quote, he gets to "dream another dream and live that too". He was an exciting player when he was out there and I wish him the best in his post-football career.

Still my favorite David Wilson quote is:
"I'm like birth control. You have to believe in me. Like birth control, 99.9 percent of the time I'm going to come through for you."

Sorry to hear about that. Tough ending to a potentially promising career, but as a Michigan fan, all I will ever remember him for is JMFR tackling him for what must've been a -20 yard loss in the Sugar Bowl.

All the same, best of luck in the future.

I'll always remember David Wilson for running backwards in the Sugar Bowl game and doing backflips in the endzone in the pro's. If he could correct his fumbling issues, he would have been a problem for opposing teams. I hate to see a guy's career end with so much potential. Well wishes.

Hate to hear this news. I know this has to be rough on him but I love his mentality about the situation. He has great character. I know he loved football and has his best years right in front of him.
