OT: Colin Cowherd's Rock Band Tourney

Submitted by Moe Greene on

DIsclaimer: I don't like Cowherd. But this is a march madness-style tournament based on rock bands, and it's kind of cool:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/story?page=bracket/rockbands

Some of the picks are odd (jackson 5?) and some of the matchups are intriguing (GNR / Van Halen, nine inch nails vs Grateful Dead).

Should Nirvana be a #2 seed?

Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.

That was actually kind of fun.. I love the 2nd seeded Eagles, but the Beatles are the favorites for me. You just can't beat a good Beatles song..

Nirvana should absolutely be a 2 seed.

Queen should be at least a 3 seed, being below Van Halen, The Police, and some other bands is a freakin travesty.

Stones/Queen/Green Day/Nirvana

Queen/Nirvana

Nirvana

CLEVELAND

Zep/Stripes/Rush/Metallica/Marley/Doors/Ramones/Soundgarden

Zep/Metallica/Doors/Ramones

Zep/Ramones

Zep

NEW YORK

U2/Clash/Bon Jovi/Aerosmith/Sublime/The Who/Dead/Pink Floyd

U2/Aerosmith/Sublime/Pink Floyd

New York, a final eight includes U2, Aerosmith, The Who, The Dead, Pink Floyd...chuck in Bon Jovi, The Clash...brutal.

My contrasts with your picks going into round 3:

AC/DC beats Green Day

Skynard beats Nirvana

The Who beat Sublime

Hendrix beats Pearl Jam

Van Halen beats STP

Reviewing the above...I suspect the results of this bracket will have something to say about Cowherd's listeners' demographics.

I'm hoping for the Dead to 'shock the world' and come out with baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes.  Bonus if they all shave their heads...

IMO:
<br>Sublime and Pink Floyd advance with Pink Floyd winning it. U2 is terrible. Sublime is okay, but overrated, especially living in so cal I used to hear Sublime everywhere.

Pink Floyd should be a No. 1 seed and definitely should be in the Final 4.  Dark Side of the Moon, per Wiki  ...subsequently remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history.

Stoney and Wojo used to do this type of thing all the time back in the mid-to-late 90's in their heyday on WDFN.  Each caller would pick the winner of one matchup.  Candy bars and sitcoms were 2 of the themes I remember.  I think The Detroit News even put the brackets in their paper the day of the "tournament".

So don't give Cowturd too much credit.

I used to truly enjoy their show. Even wojo hamming it during the candy tournament with "oh no! Snickers is upset by skittles" was very fun. As opposed to today's tough guy know it all d-bags like rome and cowher. Van pelt is the only fun one left and he loves college football.

That's bold. They made some music back in the day. Unless they got deducted for the swinging door of singers they've had lately.

I think they were trying to get some 3 vs. 14 and 5 vs. 12 upsets like in the real tourney, but Journey's 1st round matchup was too tough.  I'm glad Rush got by Styx, Mr. Roboto had me scared for a while.

My friends make fun of me all the time, too. I've seen them, like, twenty-five times. Tommy Shaw, when I was, like, sixteen years old, I was at the concert, he actually reached out and grabbed my hand, pulled me up on stage, and I got to do the robot voice for Mr. Roboto!

Long Time Reader.

I like this idea, but cmon.  No CCR, no Cream, no Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, No Bruce Springsteen.

But Nickelback, Creed, and Outkast are in the field, really???

No Bruce?

I think I recall hearing him say 'bands not solo artists' but if Marley gets in with the Wailers the E Street Band ought to be enough.

CCR?  No excuse.  CSNY?

Journey, Styx and Foreigner but no Chicago?

Yardbirds?

Velvet Underground?

(am I further dating myself?)

so Bruce, Tom Petty, Elvis and etc were not going to be included.  Also, Cowherd has some salient points once in a while.  Everyone has to realize that the people who do talkshows on the radio or TV have to be irrational, otherwise they do not get ratings.  Look at Rush, Glenn Beck, and even our very own Valenti and Foster.  If you sounded sane all the time, no one would pay attention.

ken725

They get ratings because they get listeners from both sides. I bet Valenti got lots of Michigan fans who think he is irrational to tune in after we beat msu. Those guys that you mentioned think they are being rational.  It is actually irrational for people to tune in and listen to things that make them upset.  I guess we can't help it because I find myself listening to crap that annoys me.

While I have no problem with the bands on here, the seeding is screwed up, no way oasis or smashing pumpkins should be seeded as low as they are.  i think a 6 and 7 seed would be appropriate.  Also.......GO TOOL!!!  Too bad morons will vote van halen over TOOL, Van Halen sucks

Sublime as a six? Phish included at all? This whole bracket reminds me of Chuck Klosterman's 'most accurately rated' article. Nirvana as a 2 seed is ridiculous. For as much as we liked to think they changed the world, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nevermind with a radio landscape dominated by Ke$ha. That's probably clear channel's fault more than anybodys, but I think people tend to exagerate Nirvana's legacy because they weren't around long enough to make a lot of bad later albums (ahem, Aerosmith).

It irks me that Creed and Nickelback are in this tourney. I hope that they're just in there to get pounded in the first round. I don't want people to look at those bands and think they are representative of that era of music.

imo there are actually a lot of shitty bands in this tourney but i've never been a fan of 80s cock rock.

smwilliams

Regardless, this whole exercise is pointless. I mean, my top 5 favorite bands are...

1.Queen

2.Nirvana

3.The Beatles

4.Sublime

5.CCR

Yours may be

1.Metallica

2.ACDC

3.Van Halen

4.Guns N Roses

5.Skynard

There is very little consensus about music because each people's tastes are different. That said, certain music is inherently Good (Beatles, Queen, etc.) and some music is inherently Bieber.

For the same reason that despite your tastes you can't argue The Godfather is a bad movie while arguing Bigger Mommas is a good movie.

Art is art.

Seriously, they and the Killers are the only rock bands of the last decade that matter. Iron Maiden would be a top 2-3 seed if this was an international tourney. If you get a chance, check out the Iron Maiden World Tour video they show on VH1 classic every other weekend. Their lead singer pilots a 767. Lots of good Spinal Tappian scenes.

My nightmare matchup - Round 2, Rush vs. Metallica. Only 2 of my all-time favorites. Meeting so early in the tourney. Yeesh.

is that there are upsets:

* Skynyrd over Jackson 5 (And no, I'm not southern)

* Beastie Boys over Marley (Just on the basis of Sabotage alone)

I could even go Sabbath over Chili Peppers - on the basis of iconic status.

I'm very intrigued by Allman Brothers / White Stripes - Jack probably takes that in a walk by a younger internet audience...
