OT: Cigar Aficionados - What's your favorite cigar?

Submitted by HenneGivenSunday on

It's been a little slow on the board lately, thought I'd throw out a little OT.

I'm sure we've got a few cigar folks on the site, thought I'd get a few opinions as a novice and occasional cigar smoker.

What's your go-to for the following:

Special Occasions?

Golf/Tailgating?

Cheap?

I haven't experienced a lot of different ones yet, but so far I'm a fan of the Rocky Patel 1999 Vintage Connecticuts & Romeo y Julieta's House of Montague(or Capulet for that matter) 6x60s.

Any recommendations on accessories are also more than welcome.

Go Blue!

So, for me it's a couple of things:

1) I used to chew tobacco and have given that up, successfully.  However, I apparently can't be without some type of vice.  I seem to be able to stick to being a casual cigar smoker, which is a huge improvement.

2) I enjoy doing it because it means I'm outdoors in a relaxing setting, maybe that's the association.

It's very tough to quit, especially for me when I was almost up to 2 tins/day.  I'd been chewing for about 10 years or so.  I tried quitting 3-4 times before.  The longest I quit for was 8 months at one point, and I was always doing it for someone else.  Finally, I decided to quit for myself.  I bought some nicotine gum, had one last, nice, long chaw and threw the tin away.  The nicotine gum helped (as did leaving the country for a week where I couldn't get my hands on it), and now the occassional regular stick of gum calms most cravings.  I won't lie though, every once in a great while I still want to do it.  I have to talk myself out of it.

Cohiba.

Got a buddy from Cuba who brings them back for me by the box. Could never afford them on my own but his family works in the plant and gets them for 100 a box.

Other than that I highly recommend Gurkha
