OT: Canada vs China men's hockey thread

Submitted by crg on February 15th, 2022 at 8:56 AM

Not surprised that no one has posted, but there are two active Michigan Men on team Canada... and moat likely the USA is going to be facing them in the later rounds.

Except... Canada is in a surprisingly tight game against China still.  Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, but gave up two PP after and is now only leading 2-1.  They are not looking like their normal super-humans on ice.

I would say China has a chance but... their star goalie (American Jeremy Smith that plays for KHL team in China), just left the game near the 1st intermission due to what looks like an ACL or similar knee injury (non-contact, putting no weight on it as being helped into locker room).  Hate to see anyone hurt in these games - hoping he is ok.

How?  A chance to play in the Olympics when no other country has a spot for you (plus a fairly decent paycheck).  A number of athletes would probably do this - even if it means playing against your own nation's team (and all the deception and obfuscation about your own name & citizenship status).

I'm not upset at the players, but more at the IOC and other "governing" organizations that allow nations (not just China) to flout the rules & spirit of the games because $$$.

crg,  I'm agreeing with you.... I wasn't asking how the players could make the choice to do it.  I was asking how is it allowable, seems to be a major stretch of the intention of the Olympics.

Its like, I had a layover in China, on my vacation to Australia..... flight out was delayed so I was actually in the airport for over 4 hours.... Ok, we can work with that....

To your point, I don't believe, in fact I know, that the average American has no clue that the security of our country's future is becoming increasingly compromised by the growing economic and military strength of China.

Having said that, unfortunately I believe we have transgressed the "no politics" rule on this board.  Although I believe this type of dialogue is going to be critical for our survival as a nation.  Just not here...

chalky, you are so right, it is not 'perfectly fine'.  we don't do business with china.  i have forgone countless purchases over the years for things great and small because the item was made in china.  clothes, electronics, shoes, you name it.  i'm sure there are a few chinese products in our house, but only a very few.

Don't know about Canada, but I was loving me some General Tso's Chicken from ... China Garden? Was that the name on South U/Church? Looks like its now a "Motivation" clothing store.

Ironically, I could have used some extra motivation in college, and probably a little less General Tso's chicken.

What were we talking about again?

Everyone agreed (1997+) that East quad food was total trash. BUT, im pretty sure they had this grill thing on the back side that was open late for like... burgers, tots, or something. my memory escapes me but im pretty sure we did that. Bursley had the same thing, though i rarely went.

The best food was the girls dorm - forgot the name - it was open to everyone, but it was a girls dorm only.. on state street i think. Bursley was good too actuall ywith... sexy grandpa? Man ive forgotten a lot.

Yes, the Halfway, RIP! It was an unwritten rule at the time I was there that you always called it the Half-ass.

Yes there are some all-girls dorms on State, but perhaps you're thinking of Stockwell which is up on the hill? The Virgin Vault (a tongue-in-cheek nickname that I did nothing to dispel albeit not for lack of effort) always had a reputation as one of the better cafeterias.

Betsy Barbour was on State and was the home of Sexy Grandpa.  Martha Cook was the one on South U.  Cook was easy to sneak into and out of if you had a girlfriend that lived there.  They stopped manning the front door at 8pm and didn't check the cameras.  In the morning, you could take the elevator to the basement and walk out through the kitchen.  The kitchen crew would laugh and cheer for all the guys as they filed out...or so I've heard.

Oriental Express on Packard was my jam.  1 quart of Chicken Fried Rice in a big Styrofoam cup was dinner more often than not.  I'd walk to class at night while shoveling down my $3 dinner and was fat and happy.

Thanks for mentioning Oriental Express! I was trying to remember the name. I lived at 723 Packard back in 1997-1999. I used to eat the General Tso's there at lunch time because they had cheaper prices.  Since I ate there so much, the lady at the register would always yell back into the kitchen when I came in to pay... normally that meant I was getting the dinner size at lunch prices! Loved that place!

Bell's Pizza was also a favorite of mine across the street... $5 large cheese pizza and large drink take away special.

This comment right here is amazing, life-affirming, wonderful, "Hurrah for LSA Aught One-mazov!"

I didn't even come close to experiencing this, but feel now as if I had.

The cold January air slicing through your jeans as you go out the back entrance, on your way to Mason Hall, you'll see your girlfriend later that day, pick up a Gargoyle near the fishbowl....

....how do we get back there?
