OT: 5* Swanigan Still Hasn't Signed With Sparty

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

A month after committing, 5* Caleb Swanigan stil hasn't signed with MSU. Izzo addressed the situation without mentioning his name, and said he's not worried. But it sounds like they've got another Malik McDowell situation on their hand. Dad is apparently balking at signing the LOI.

This is a sample NLI (it's a few years old, but the letter and provision in it haven't changed significantly) from a site that provides information on scholarships and recruitment, in the event that there is anyone here that has never read one - LINK

If there was ever a letter that begged you not to sign it, it is the NLI. I'll put it like that.

should love this. The NLI grants all of the authority and restrictions to the powers above once a young 17-18 year old signs this. A very convenient mechanism/instrument used by the NCAA. I feel bad for the kids that get taken adavantage of by the NLI.

Read the NLI and let me know where it guarantees them a scholarship once they sign.

I'm no lawyer and may be just completely missing it, but I don't see it guaranteeing anything.  The Finacial Aid Agreement does, and while signing that is part of the NLI, the NLI itself doesn't seem to guarantee jack squat for the student athelete.

Everyone thought he was going to Cal but he surprised them by going Sparty.  That would have been a huge get for Cal considering their remaining class.

And someone wants him to think about it.

Kind of like how Brown all but committed to Kentucky -- whoops, not so fast says AAU coach -- how about Cal. I know it's looked down upon to insinuate "pay for play", but the parallels here seem kind of odd.

Either way, I could go for him not being at MSU next year (and possibly for a few years after that).

Man, think of the mileage Izzo could get from that one

4 years later "Well it's tough losing like that. You don't want to blame people but I blame Caleb Swanigan for ruining our program. I'm faultless, but even I can't handle such a ruthless gutting of our team"

not surprised....Roosevelt Barnes, former Purdue standout, is his legal guardian. Swanigan moved to Ft Wayne from Salt Lake City in 8th Grade to live with Barnes; who was a Detroit Lion and an NFL agent.

so it makes sense...

Is there anything shady with how he became his legal guardian? If there is, this is a pretty effed up way to avoid the NCAA's prohibition on professional representation. If it is a shady situation it's a savy move right now since he knows enough to not have Swanigan sign the LOI, but it could get fun down the line with the NBA contract.

Perhaps with Brown joining Rabb at Cal that has Swanigan reconsidering his choice.  The three of them are apparently pretty good friends from the AAU circuit.  Besides Swanigan was projected to go Cal.

In other related news...has Jaylen Brown signed his LOI yet?

Maybe Swanigan committed to MSU because he thought Brown was going to come here or UK. Now that him and Rabb are at Cal he follows suit.

What is this recent fixation with Cal and good recruits? They're a pretty awful program with a coach who left Tennessee with an NIT loss to Mercer at home.

They haven't been to an Elite Eight in over 50 years. It was also the last time OSU won a national championship (lulz).

Rabb is from Oakland (right next to Berkeley) and Brown played in High School with younger brothers of a famous Cal player who also made it to the NBA. Plus they had hinted at playing together. Plus, Berkeley...

Long story short, there were a lot of coincidental factors contributing to these two recruiting wins, and none of them are related to Cal's program or their coach.

1. For Swanigan at least, Cuonzo Martin was a Boilermaker, along with his guardian...so there's that relationship. Probably also sees him as a charismatic coach who can get him to the NBA, Martin did play in the league.

2. Cal's a good school if you wanted to go back and get your degree later

3. California (Bay Area, but still beats Midwest for many people)

4. Friends playing there

5. WIth 4, has chance to be damn good right away and create a legacy. Cal's going to be really damn good next year, may as well posse up and try and win a championship. For some the history doesn't matter much.

A big name commits and suddenly you get more.  That is even more true today with the AAU circuit the way it is.  It doesn't mean there is any impropriety.  Juwan commiting to Michigan was the impetus for the others to do so.  And only 1 of the Fab Five took improper benefits--and that was apparently after his recruiting--not a quid pro quo.

money too, not big money, but he did.

I think Juwan signing was the impetus for Jimmy to sign due to their official visits occuring at the same time.  It was Jackson's best scholarship offer by far, so I don't think his commitment is that big of a mystery.

As for as Jalen and Chris, well, count me as one person who doesn't think we have heard the "rest of the story."

You'll need to source that one for me.  I know he said people would buy him pizza and the like (I believe even Mitch Albom said he did), but I don't recall him ever getting anything more or anything that was part of the NCAA punishment.

that may be true about Rose, who, of course, denies it.  But Webber's recruiting was much more complicated than that and delivered is far over-stated for Chris/Perry.
