The Opening Day 2 Open Thread
I thought I would start a new thread to discuss the action at the Opening today.
1. 7-on-7 pool play is going on today. Shane Morris opened on fire today as Land Sharks team rolled over Brice Ramsey's (UGa) squad.
Shane Morris' team RT @RecruitingESPN Land Sharks beat Vapor Carbon, 27-6
Michigan QB commit Shane Morris is on fire in game one. Making all the right throws.
Jake Butt caught the game winning TD as his team (also Mike McCray) won their opener.
Tyrone Swoopes to Jake Butt as time expires to lift #AlphaTalon over #SuperBad 18-13 #THEOPENING
2. Linemen 1-on-1 took place earlier this morning. Unfortunately due to HS regulations in MI and OH, David Dawson and Taco Charlton could not participate with pads and had limited reps. But Taco still got rave reviews:
#Michigan commit Taco Charlton is a very athletic DE - quick and long.
Ohio players can't pad up here but Taco Charlton, wearing just a helmet, is one of the quickest ends here #Michigan
247sports: The guys from states where you can't wear pads are going now. Taco Charlton has been dominant.
3. Kyle Bosch went home sick today. Wish we could have seen him participate and hope he gets better soon.
Michigan commit Kyle Bosch headed home from #TheOpening per his family. Illness.
Who came up with these team names? Alpha Talon? Vapor Carbon? What are these?
everything is "combat" related...(then again, I don't know that they came up with the names, I just wanted to say "Stupid Nike")
And yes, theses names suck more than Legends & Leaders. I do like the fact they held a draft last night to pick teams. I liked the regional format of Rivals Challenge, but this seems the best way to have the teams competitive.
From 247 Barton Simmons:
Jaylon Smith is the truth. I'm not sure I've ever seen a linebacker that can affect 7on7 as much as he can. Length and range is special.
Jaylon Smith runs 30 yards down field with a slot then nearly grabs a pick that he would have scored on. He's awesome in coverage
Sounds like Shane Morris' team could be the best squad there. Not looking forward to playing Jaylon Smith for 4 years but better at ND than Ohio.
Yeah, Smith is an absolute beast athletically. Let's just hope that he can't learn to read pulling linemen or something in the future.
Jaylon Smith is easily the most athletic LB here, #NotreDame getting a great one
Jaylon Smith is the best high school football player in the country that I've seen in person.
Barton Simmons @bartonsimmons
Jaylon Smith is the best player on this field. Period. No question In my opinion. #TheOpening
Hopefully, his career plays out like Manti Teo.
Yeah, ND's next coach is going to have a great player to work with.
but I would advise not throwing the ball in his direction.
Isn't that a Brian Kelly quote?
the "I'm no coach" part? In that case, +1 for your genius.
I'm really counting on Kelly to continue coaching these kids down at ND because his entire 3 deep rotation on defense (and offense for that matter) will be all high4 low5 star players pretty soon. Maybe they can pair off against FSU in the UnderArmor sponsored Underwhelming Bowl
The coach of the Orange Team on ESPN U right now is sporting the Old English D!
EDIT: It was the coach in the huddle, not the coach along the sideline!
jeez Derrick Green looks like a freaking DE playing RB. Dude is huge.
Brutal drop, glad we're not recruiting him at WR. But yes, he looks like a monster.
I think he heard the proverbial footsteps..
I agree though...he looks like he is a beast of a RB
Not sure what difference footsteps would make considering their playing touch football. Maybe just a conditioned response...or just bad hands.
It's just bad hands. He doesn't catch the ball well, whether closely covered or not.
It is too bad that the game they decided to show on ESPN U has one team with ZERO UofM commits in it! Hopefully when all is said and done, there will be at least one (Fuller/Green)
Cooper Bateman looks unimpressive.
I thought he looked pretty good...when he was chasing down Larenz Bryant after a pick.
Unbelievable. They are going to show the Max Browne-Tyrone Swoopes game exclusively it looks like. At least we will be able to watch Jake Butt and Jourdan Lewis.
Correction on 2nd TV game - will be #FieldGenerals v #AlphaTalon, who is QB-ed by Tyrone Swoopes not Shane Morris #THEOPENING
#Michigan #Wolverines QB commit Shane Morris is top trending recruit nationally right now at http://Directsnap.com
CONSPIRACY!!! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!
Where is Swoopes going? Isn't it Texas? I'm looking for some kind of sec conspicary theory here.
But Shane has the only undefeated team left in pool play. And Tyrone Swoopes has already been picked off twice in that game.
Morris is down 12-0 right now, though...
This is ESPN's way of telling us that Texas is moving to the SEC.
/s
#VaporSpeed strikes first against #LandSharks on Field 2 @chackenberg1 to @marcusbeezy 6-0
I think that is 3 INTs for Tyrone Swoopes in prime time.
Michigan CB commit Jourdan Lewis with an INT
I haven't been watching. Has Shane Morris been the most impressive QB today?
I've seen him ranked #3 of the guys there.
Eh, today Treiu said Morris and Browne are neck and neck and another guy said Morris has been the most impressive today. Yesterday he was the least impressive of the bunch.
247sports take on day 2 QB action.
1- Shane Morris- The Michigan commit had the most consistent day. In a setting where quarterbacks tend to settle for the checkdowns and short, safe passes, he was able to consistently throw the ball down the field successfully. We have seen Morris in this setting throw the ball inconsistently in the past, but today, he was on the money.
2- Max Browne- Browne did not have a bad game during the 7on competition. He’s got a big arm, good leadership ability/intangibles and of course, size/height. Browne, playing for former Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins, had the most command of his team in this setting. He is a USC commit.
3- Christian Hackenberg- The Penn State commit had the best release of any of the quarterbacks there and is the smoothest, most natural quarterback prospect of any in attendance. That being said, he also was the most turnover-prone in this setting and had threw more than 15 picks as a high school junior last year. His skill set is such that he could be the best quarterback prospect in this class.
Notes
-The three prospects at the top, Morris, Browne and Hackenberg were very, very close performance-wise on Saturday.
I believe I saw the same update you did but that was about yesterday. From reading updates, it seems like Shane has been top 2 or 3 on everybody's list but the guys in front of him first day are behind him second day and vice versa. Meaning he is playing pretty consistently through the weekend.
Bryan Fischer: No, I'd put him #2 behind Shane Morris today. RT @gsharris Max Browne by far the best QB at thw Opening thus far...
Bryan Fischer from CBS Sports has him #1 for the day today:
No, I'd put him #2 behind Shane Morris today. RT @gsharris Max Browne by far the best QB at thw Opening thus far...
Hackenberg with his 2nd TD pass, big play was an acrobatic catch by Lequan Treadwell, 12-0 hack's squad up. #pennstate
Hooray for Lequan Treadwell!
Tray Matthews picks off a Shane Morris pass. Alpha Speed up 12-0 with another chance to score before the half
A late INT by Morris gave Hackenberg another shot. He cashed in with his 3rd TD, this one to Ricky Seals-Jones. 20-0, Hack is hot
Sounds like he is not playing at the level he played at in the first 2 wins.
Hack by far and away has the best receiving corp in the 7 on 7. Treadwell/RSJ is just stupid.
ESPNU from 8 to 10 p.m. (EST) again.
The 7on7 will be in the tournament portion of competition so only the winners of early games will probably be televised (i.e. don't expect to see more Tyrone Swoopes or Brice Ramsey tomorrow).
This game should have been televised. I hate you ESPN. Shane and the Land Sharks down 18-13.
Shane Morris to OJ Howard for a score then Levonte Whitfield for the conversion. Land Sharks still down 2 scores
Pick six by Colin Spencer. Land Sharks down one score now
OJ Howard with another Circus catch PAT from Morris, Morris and Howard trail Hackenberg 18-13 #rolltide
Appreciate these updates!
Why ESPN?
#LandSharks has closed to 18-14 in second half vs. #AlphaSpeed and is driving again #THEOPENING
Alpha Speed holds on 4th and goal. Still lead the Land Sharks 18-14
Ummm...what does this have to do with anything? OJ Howard is a tight end, and Levonte Whitfield is a wide receiver.
