Open practice reaction thread

Submitted by go16blue on

It won't be over for a few hours still, but I figured I may as well start this thread now. I'm there currently. It's tough to take much from a practice like this, but I can give an impression of the depth chart. Sorry for the disorganization.

Rudock at QB, Smith at RB, Harris/Perry/Chesson at WR (haven't seen much Darboh now that I think of it). Line is as it was reported previously. LBs were solidly Ross/Bolden/Morgan (now wearing #3), and CBs saw a lot of LewisClark (thanks Qmatic), Stribling, and a couple others. Hill and Wilson played with the 1s at S, and of course Jabril played every snap. Butt obviously started at TE. Isaac was first off the bench at RB, Morris at QB. I'll try to update with further impressions as possible. I'd love to see other attendees corroborate the above, and add more details. They came down on phones pretty hard so this is all from memory.

Since neither of them has ever done anything at that position.  Doesn't sound like Lewis was out for the season, though, or he wouldn't have been dressed, but hopefully he'll be one of the starters against Utah.  Losing him for any lenght of time would be a huge blow, since we have no other proven player at that position.

They've been wearing the old 2014 jerseys in every practice clip we've seen so far. That's SOP at Michigan--they use old stock for practice jerseys. They were still using the Harbaugh-era design away jerseys in practice when I was in school in the mid-2000s. It really doesn't mean much, other than that's just what they have around.

In attendance. Harbaugh very organized. Shane is clearly not the starter. Peppers is very fast. Butt very impressive. Running backs look all the same. Harris looked good. Defense was vanilla. Bolden has a mean streak for sure.

Any Shallman sightings? Sounds like the Darboh injury rumors from last week (which got heavily criticized) were true. Leaves one to wonder if the Shallman injury rumors were also true.

Not only was Shallman missing from the scrimmage, he was absent from a drill at the beginning of practice where the QBs were handing of to the running backs, and the fullbacks were leading the running backs up the field. As for Wheatley Jr., I can confirm I saw him in street clothes and a boot on his ankle.

I think we get a better picture of the offense main players, but I wonder are the bystander players really injured or are they taking the night off and will be available on September 3.  Coach Harbaugh is a straight up guy, and I expect he would play the players if he could, However, in two weeks, Darboh, Kugler, and others could be ready to play.

As for the Defense, the Buck Linebacker could be one of the Defensive ends, so the 4-2-5 may actually be a 3-3-5.  I defer to more experienced opinions.  However, one more thought, Michigan is playing a pro-style offense with TE's and two RB in the backfield.  Utah has played a spread offense for the last couple years, and would Michigan play another defensive scheme in open practice, and then present a different defensive scheme on game day.  I don't think Coach Harbaugh wants to telegraphy any details to the other team.  (One other note, Utah is on its 4th or 5th OC in the last 5-6 years, so what should we expect from Utah this year?)

After reading some of these reports, its scary to think that if Hoke hadnt been fired we'd potentially be stuck with Morris as our starter for two years.
