An old article on the Harbaugh's

Submitted by HAIL-YEA on

I came across a really cool article from 2011 written about the Harbaugh family that also sheds some light on their relationship with Hoke and Mattison. I'm sure most of you already knew Hoke worked for Jack at WMU but still there are some nice stories in the article. Here is 1 of them

". Turned out Hoke's wife, Laura, was in labor -- three months early. Harbaugh rushed to University Hospital in Kalamazoo and sat in the waiting room with Brady's and Laura's mothers. "Jack Harbaugh took charge," Hoke says. "But that's just the person he is. He's tough, but he had a great personal side to him." Kelly Hoke was born that night, weighing 1 pound, 14 ounces. With Hoke stranded in Fort Wayne, Harbaugh was one of the first people to see Kelly. "You could hold her in the palm of your hand and her little hands and arms were hanging down," Harbaugh remembers. For the next 19 years, whenever Valentine's Day rolled around, Jack Harbaugh placed a call to Kelly Hoke, wishing her a Happy Birthday. Hoke never forgot it."

Plenty of other Michigan related stories in the article and worth a read if this stuff is new to you like it was for me.

This thought had crossed my mind. I also think this is the reason the Hackett said they would be fully paying out all the contracts. If you want Harbaugh, it seems you have to be as good to Hoke and Mattison as you possibly can be in this process. To his credit paying Hoke his full salary through next years seems like a smart move if that is where he is going with this.

I think we've witnessed enough cronyism over the years. Maybe I'm wrong, but there just seems to be too much buddy buddy stuff that has gone on over the years that bites us in the ass with drama/controversy. This doesn't seem to happen at other successful programs.

I guess I'm leaning towards a complete house cleaning.

I tend to agree. I don't want guys kept on just because they're good guys and friends, but if the guy is right for the job, being a friend shouldn't preclude them either. Having said that, Mattison is obviously a good DC but maybe not great. I'd probably rather have Muschamp or maybe Pelini. I'd take Hoke as our DL coach.

However, when someone gets fired or demoted their feelings can change. They can harbor resentment, but not always show it which can lead to sabotage. Then people try to get others to take their side with their agendas and chaos ensues.  I'm sure Hoke is nice guy and cares for the school, but why take that chance?

We've been practically irrelevant for too long and need to get this right.

neg for horrible punctuation (please for the love of all that's holy STOP putting apostrophes in the wrong GD places!!!!!!!!!), but the story was too heartwarming. I'll be seeing you later in a different thread!

Also, agree with others who say NO to the cronyism. Clean the effing house and see what that does for a change.

during Jack Harbaugh & staff's tenure at WMU.

His teams SUCKED.
He was also generally an ass every time I encountered him (so was I though, so yeah).

also, there is no university hospital.

It's a good article though and I'm happy to see another side to him, thanks for posting it.
