Ohio State center questions program on podcast which is subsequently deleted

The center was benched for the bowl game and it looks like the bama center that can't snap just committed to OSU.  Interesting.  Media stuff doesn't just get deleted when Michigan is involved.

https://awfulannouncing.com/college-football/carson-hinzman-podcast-ohio-state-buckeyes-benched.html

In the weeks leading up to Ohio State’s Cotton Bowl loss to the Missouri Tigers, Ohio State starting center Carson Hinzman gave an extremely candid podcast interview detailing the current state of the Buckeye football program under head coach Ryan Day. But it seems that he might have been a little bit too candid as the podcast was quickly deleted, and Hinzman did not play a single snap in the Cotton Bowl last week.

About a week and a half before the Cotton Bowl, Hinzman joined “The B&B Podcast” where he opened up about several things Ohio State probably would have preferred not to become public.

In the podcast, Hinzman claimed that the Buckeyes had far fewer practices ahead of the Cotton Bowl than they did for their bowl prep last season, replacing them with “light workouts” instead. He also alleged that the Miami Hurricanes offered former Ohio State commits Justin Scott and Jordan Lyle massive amounts of money to flip their commitments, and claimed that “Ohio State doesn’t really like to pay guys a whole lot” in the form of NIL payments, claiming that offensive linemen in particular “don’t get paid” at Ohio State.

Hinzman also compared the current culture of the program under Day to the culture under previous head coach Urban Meyer, indicating that Meyer’s practices and workouts were much more difficult and asked a lot more of players physically. He also spoke candidly about fights during practice and his disdain for his current strength and conditioning goals.

The podcast attracted a lot of attention from Ohio State fans on social media, but it was quietly deleted from both YouTube and Amazon a couple of days after it was initially published on Dec. 20, though it remains available on Listen Notes.

The fact that the podcast was quietly deleted is interesting enough as it suggests that someone was not exactly happy with the content of the interview, but things got even more interesting when the Cotton Bowl kicked off.

Even though Hinzman started all 12 regular season games for the Buckeyes this season, he did not play a single snap in the Cotton Bowl showdown with Missouri as former starting right guard Matt Jones moved to center for the game with senior offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi starting in his place at right guard.

While the timing seems like quite a coincidence, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said after the game that the move was due to Hinzman’s recent struggles in practice.

I thought maybe they were recruiting him for guard but nope it has been confirmed he's going to be a center for OSU. Crazy, but I'm sure they'll fix his season long snapping issues.

Even more interesting is that he noted one of the reasons he committed to OSU is the OL coach so I guess they're keeping Frey who OSU fans hate.

Confirmed to be a Center by who/where?

I've only seen McLaughlin being considered as a OG to replaced departing senior RG Matt Jones.

It would be surprising that C Carson Hinzman would lose the starting Center job completely despite the "shadow suspension" from the podcast interview. Carson Hinzman partial won the job this season because he was a freshman who competed with an upperclassman in Vic Cutler Jr., so the coaching staff went with the younger guy in the hope of longer-term stability at the position.

Is it paywalled? Because all of Bill Kurelic's recent tweets and article just generically call McLaughlin an "interior offensive lineman" transfer.

I wouldn't doubt that McLaughlin will have an opportunity to battle Hinzman for the starting Center job, but it just isn't the most pressing need on O-Line right now. Ohio State will be graduating senior starting RG Matt Jones this season, and starting LG Donovan Jackson (Jr.) is expected to declare for the NFL draft. So from a needs standpoint, OG is much more of a priority than Center.

TBH - unsure, but Hinzman didn't enter the transfer portal with ample time to do it.

Right now due to the extra free COVID year, Ohio State is in a scholarship crunch to hit the NCAA-mandated 85 scholarship limit.. They sit at 84 scholarship players with 22 freshmen incoming from the newest recruiting class, but I don't think an already thin OL is where Day and the coaches will look to free up scholarships.

Not too much new in his take that isn't obvious to the outside.  Ryan Day <<<<<<< Urban Meyer.  The program has lost physical and mental toughness.  The program is full of self-doubt now, mirroring the head coach who needs to dye and groom his beard.  Day's 30-40lb weight gain in the last 2 years shows how he's handling the pressure.  Ryan Day is exactly what many expected; an OC, who likes to design and call plays, who's given a HC job.  Ryan Day is the Peter Principal incarnate.  He's the Josh McDaniels of college, except that in college the talent gap can mask these flaws for longer, especially in the recent B1G.  He should bolt immediately and cash in on an A & M type situation while he's still got cred.  Otherwise, no QB, no OL, WRs receding, he's going to end up with his next gig at N. Illinois or something.  He can't survive another year like this one.

It isn't just the O-Line - Insiders have said that Ryan Day doesn't put effort into obtaining "large NIL contract" with the various NIL collectives. Day's goal with NIL has been to get existing players on the roster all a cut, and last year had supposedly secured at least a 5-figure NIL deal for every player on the roster (apparently at least $30,000/year for each player).

Day has been hands-off with NIL collectives on putting together the multi-million deals for select players, but he also doesn't actively work against them it just hasn't been where he puts his focus.

Day complaining about the center's recent struggles in practice when they were doing light workout? What struggle he would during light workout? Wasn't eating snack fast enough? Geeezz

Day should have taken the high road. But that is not in his character.

Loving the culture war at OSU. Pleas continue this trend.

"Wasn't eating snack fast enough?"

Well, they aren't there to play school. So it's more like kindergarten.  There's snack time, nap time, line up for the bus time...

Each needs to be observed and properly graded. We don't know. Did he nap? Did he line up for the bus appropriately? Maybe snack time was the deciding factor. We just don't have enough information on this one.

Well, we do know the line was an embarrassment without him. But is that what really matters here?

OSU obviously needs to pay O lineman. Of course (in over his head) Day wouldn’t know that. He’s to infatuated with his collection of 5 star qb’s and receivers.

This story was posted on the board last week sometime, but I think it was buried in a thread rather than its own OP.  In any case, there's been so much user content in the last two weeks nobody can complain that OP missed it, and no negs for stirring up flies off the horse should be allocated.

Meanwhile, Saban seems to believe that the sound of one hand clapping leads to low snaps.

He doesn't appear to be claiming Michigan was clapping, but I'm having a bit of a problem believing that low snaps were any kind of a timing issue. Harbaugh has broken football. Just wait until the Raven contingent is on the sideline.

Over at Eleven Warriors they are saying (in defense of their new Center) Milroe lined up incorrectly.  But I don't see how those snaps are good if he moves a yard closer to the line.  low is low.

Edit:  I personally think the snaps were bad no matter what.  But there still could be a tell from Milroe regarding how he lines up if it is a run vs. pass.  Sounds like he takes a yard step back if it is a run.

Looks like word salad. One low snap is because he snapped early--already doesn't make sense. Plus low snaps were a season long (and game long) issue, yet the last one is only because of the clapping thing. Furthermore, no indication of why the center thought he heard a clap.

Saban is not doing a great job of damage control over the last play, not that it really matters for his legacy.

I'm watching the skycast view (the all-22 view) of the game right now, and when it started they showed Saban coming out of the tunnel.  The look on his face was one of nervous and serene doubt - if that even makes sense.  It was a 2-second throw away clip, and when I saw it my immediate reaction was that he knew he didn't have the best team on the field.

I wish he would just say they lost the game and stop with the backhanded compliments ('all-due respect to Michigan')...

I'm mostly fascinated by the fact that OSU has a backup center who can snap the ball, but Alabama does not. And then, OSU wants the center who can't snap the ball? Really confusing.

I remember during the Hoke/Meyer years that OSU thought our workout program and practices were a joke.  Say what you want about Meyer - but he was certainly one driven evil bastard who got every last ounce out of his teams.

How the tide has shifted...

This has been the subtext about Meyer. Have we established that it's for sure true?

The interesting thing is that, like Day, Harbaugh is a players' coach, too. But he seems to be able to coach incredible enthusiasm out of kids.

My own take has always been that abusive/screamer coaches can succeed for a stretch, but then need to move on and abuse someone else, have a heart attack, or wear out. I think that Meyer kind of exemplifies this. It doesn't go in the pros anymore, at least not in football and hoops, less and less in college. Once these kids have a union and are getting paid. . . the balance of power is shifting.
