What AlaskanYeti said.

Are we really still using blue collar work as a symbol of denigration?

Having put myself through the University of Michigan with blue collar work, including driving a truck, I believe our blogosphere is clever enough to find other insults.

Like the suggestion others have made, of the The Ohio State Crapper.

I get where you’re coming from, but there’s a couple of generations of M fans that have been laughing at that crack for ages. Not because there’s something wrong with driving a truck, but just because they have these violent mobs of people that have nothing to do with the school. I doubt the people that make a game in the Shoe such a miserable and life threatening experience are OSU students or anything. More like soccer hooligans. More into trashing things than supporting a football team. Just an excuse to poop in coolers.

Thanks for your observation, Mr. Dude, and I may be wrong.

But historically, when Ufer started using the reference, blue-collar work could provide a comfortable living, workers making more money than their parents. See Flint and Detroit in the 50s and 60s. But that upward path flattened after that, so now, doesn't "blue collar" more often indicate condescension to those in tough circumstances?

As for not attending, isn't that the sneer that Staee fans throw at us, many of whom didn't attend Michigan?

I thought about that idea, Comrade, enough that I hesitated to post. However, "blue collar worker"—probably coming into vogue with the rise of widespread office work (in white shirts), still tends to connote lower-paying jobs.

And unfortunately some people who have more money and college degrees, especially from more prestigious schools, still tend to use the phrase as a term of scorn.

Among the things I've learned during the pandemic is having greater appreciation for the importance of truckers, nurses, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, roofers, masons, landscapers and medical researchers. (Skills I never learned during my law school days - and yes, I know the joke about the lawyer and the plumber. LINK)

What’s wrong with their field?  Why does it need redesign?  As much as I hate them, their field is pretty sharp.  I was actually glad when Michigan did what they did with the color in the endzone and filled it in with Blue.

Maybe they’ll do one of those stupid things with the diamond pattern or just diagonal lines. But i really don’t understand why they feel it needs a redesign.

They have been dominant since their current field design.  Why change it?

I have stomped on the "O" in the middle of the field in a couple of their designs over the years in celebration of Michigan victories, but not the current design.

If I was them, I would carpet every square inch of the campus in the current design.

So many ideas. Is it easy to paint a cooler in the end zone grass? Tattoos at the hash marks? How do I draw a migraine?

before I had a job, I would have probably submitted 20-30 designs, just to annoy whoever had to look at these submissions.

The ole' Doritos marketing campaign approach. If you can't come up with good ideas yourselves and are too cheap to pay for top dollar marketing and innovating ideas, just ask the public to help and entice them with $5,000.00 and 15 minutes of fame.
