O'Brian Schofield tears ACL at Senior Bowl

Submitted by BlueintheLou on
Wisconsin DE O'Brien Schofield reportedly tore his ACL at Senior Bowl practices. Coming off of MVP honors at the Shrine Game, I can't think of something worse to happen to this kid at a worse time. Apparently, he was really displaying his talent as it would translate to linebacker. That is one tough, tough break. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4858276

He was a playmaker against us and has a great motor, but was undersized. He had to change to LB to improve his draft stock. Might end up a great 3-4 OLB, but not a pure LB. Levy went to the Lions last year in the 3rd out of Wisconsin because like Schofield, he had production. Unlike Schofield, he is big enough to play right away in the pros. That being said, I'd say 4th-5th round sounds accurate because he could develop, ACL tears aren't career killers anymore so he still has time.

Man that sucks. I really hated that guy (when we had to play against him!) and thought he was going to be very good in the NFL. Reminded me of Patrick Willis, as a guy who always seems to be in the play. I hope he has a full recovery and can make it back to the league.

sucks. It's awkwardly constructed and prone to devastating injury with even the slightest force. It sucks. Very sad news for Mr. Schofield. He was very talented. Hopefully he can recover quickly.

He could still sneak into the 3rd round. ACL surgery is fairly routine these days and he should be back to about 70% in 6 months. Thankfully it was just his ACL. In McGahee's case, his knee essentially blew up (dirty OSU hit) and he tore ALL ligaments (MCL, ACL, LCL. partial PCL tear). Thus, his needing to be out over a full year, so taking a gamble on Schofield is far safer than what the Bills did with drafting a quick and shifty rb sans one knee. Schofield will be ok.

It may sound a bit hard, but if I were potentially a low round draft choice, I would head to the NFL at my earliest available opportunity and not play beyond my school'a regular season and bowl. The Sam Bradford shoulder injury brought home what can happen if you don't. This reinforces my thinking. Really feel sorry for the guy. Hope he recovers fully and has a great career in the NFL.

Please tell me why you would disagree with this thinking. Most kids have given their school a redshirt year and at least two or three more years. Most kids have what, five years in the NFL, and a few get lucky and have long careers. Do you really blame Donovan Warren for leaving? Sure, I wish he would have hung around for my selfish reasons, but can I blame him for leaving and not putting his career on the line with an injury? No way.
