NFL Draft Day 1 open thread

Submitted by Magnus on

The first round of the NFL draft begins at 8:00 p.m. Where will Taylor Lewan go? Who's going to be the first pick? What will the Lions do? Does Johnny Manziel get picked in the first round? Who will be this year's Tony Mandarich?

Would the Lions take Odell Beckham Jr.? I would feel alright with that selection if they don't land Watkins and want a WR right away.

draftniks are convinced the 49ers are going to use their array of picks to trade up to take OBJ.  If the Lions really do want him, they might have to pull the trigger at 10, although I agree that probably is too high for his talent level.

Not sure what I want as a Bucs fan. Do you take the safer, more conventional pick in Mike Evans and give yourself two towering receivers to play with in both him and Vincent Jackson? That's what I'd probably do, but apparently Lovie is in love with Manziel. Not sure how I feel about him since I don't think his style would work in the NFL, but we've never had a franchise QB. Ever. And he'd actually give Tampa some spotlight for once. We haven't had any of that since Warren Sapp was skipping along the sidelines.

It would surprise me if Lovie Smith hitched his wagon to Manziel because he did a pretty good job with good defense and a running game in Chicago. Of course, maybe he thinks the lack of a dynamic QB was what sunk him with the Bears, but it seems like a departure from his personality.

As long as the Lions don't trade up picks by using Suh I suppose it would be hard for them to screw up too badly. There's no way in the world that Watkins = Suh + Gilbert/Dennard/Clinton-Dix/Barr/Evans.

I think there are 30 players in attendance which means several of them will not be picked in the first round. They will get close camera shots of the disapointment and anxiety on these guys' faces, and I never enjoy that part of how they cover this event. My other pet peeve is when the latter rounds start and no one on radio or TV bothers to actually talk about who is being picked or how they might help the team who's drafting. They just blab on endlessly while you search the ticker info for some help... Funny that the producer thinks the latter rounds aren't interesting enough to talk about, and yet there are plenty of fanatics out there like me who watch the whole thing every year. We don't tune in to hear you constantly yap about the first round for 3 days!

because they had vasectomies to watch the draft?

I am going to guess Lewan gets drafted higher than what people are projecting. NFL teams see a young, INTELLIGENT, hard working and eady to fight for you type of guy who isn't prone to doing stupid things. Management/coaches likes guys like this. I don't think his pending issues will hurt him. But we shall see.

I see the OTs going 2, 6 and 9. So, depending on how GMs have Lewan ranked, I see him going to one of those three picks.

I placed a rather large bet on when Johnny Manziel would be drafted. The O/U was at 4.5 overall. I obviously took the over for -110 odds. Not bad.

I don't know man... pretty much banking that Oakland takes him at 4. I don't know if that's a -110 bet, but good luck!

As much fun as it would be to see him slip in the draft, I don't want him available when the Cowboys pick comes up. The media would go crazy with that one and we'd never hear the end of it.

Alright, time to go on record: I think the Lions take Aaron Donald.  They're looking at a very real possibility of having to replace both Suh and Fairley next year and I think they will look at cornerback and safety as positions that don't have that much bottom-out potential.  Mayhew has a history of not really agreeing with the pundits about the team's bigger needs, which is why he's done things like draft Fairley and Ansah and sign Bush.  Barring a trade, I say Donald in the 1st and a WR in the 2nd.

The Niners are one of the most interesting teams in this year's draft.  They have 11 picks overall and 6 in the first three rounds.  I am betting they move up and grab Mike Evans.

For round one, here are my preferences as an Eagles fan:

1.  Ha Ha - we need a safety badly

2.  Barr - pass rusher also a big concern

3.  Beckman

4.  Lee

5.  Cooks

6.  None of those available, trade down

Makes to me...it's what I would do. O'Brien knows him, he's been in the Pats system long enough. He's from Texas.

I'd do it.

Give up a 2nd rounder for him and get Clowney and Mallett? Whoooo, hell of a first day for the Texans.

It makes sense from O'Brien's perspective. I'm not sure if it does for the Patriots. They have to get something worthwhile for him, but the Texans probably wouldn't offer much since they know the Patriots don't gain a lot by letting him sit on the bench.

Lewan was just interviewed with his mom on NFL Network.  He looks lean and mean.

Some lucky NFL team is going to get a mauler at OT when they draft him.
