Next to wear the #1 Jersey

Submitted by hennedance on
Given all the talk about the bite-size slot receivers we amass in bunches and the switch to the potentially run-heavy spread offense, I was wondering... Out of any WR either currently on the roster or currently committed to Michigan, who do you think (if any) will be the next to don the #1 jersey? My pick: R. Miller or Stonum

but I'm thinking it's Roy Roundtree. After he catches TD after TD, the talk will start. I don't think anyone will wear the #1 until next year though. I just like the chemistry between Tate and Roy so far, and they will play for a few years together. Should be fun to watch!

that Roundtree is going to much better than people realize. Even though he wasn't nearly the highest rated player in his class he was Purdue's stud-recruit (by far). I think he has a chance to be Manningham-esque as a deep-threat - not just because of his one big catch in the spring-game but also because of the coaches' talk of his speed and all that, and he has a similar style. If he doesn't get it, I think Ricardo Miller probably will be the next one, or another guy that may have a shot, and this is purely speculation based on talk, but Je'Ron Stokes may be a top deep-threat and compete for the #1. It will be interesting to watch.

it was Floyd - potentially a special-teams player for life. Of course, he was treated very kindly by the Media (like Drew Sharp) when they expected him to have simply known through telepathy that the #1 was for receivers only, and it wasn't the responsibility of someone in the Michigan family to tell him. I'm sure all he wanted to do was come to Michigan and screw up our traditions because he's a jerk like that. It's okay, though. The Detroit sports media has proven in the past that they are dependable and reliable to bring well-researched material to the table.

It's 2009. Exactly 30 years ago another freshman came to UM from Florida and made a big impact on the program. I say give the No 1 jersey to Denard Robinson.

Do not try to start this, oh my goodness, why would a non-receiver wear the jersey? How in the world does a player that doesn't play receiver wear #1 at Michigan. He doesn't - or can't, rather. Why would you start this? It's about tradition, somethintg that RichRod doesn't know. Sit down and be quiet at the games, young kids and their noise. I came to watch a football game, just take out the freaking keys! GAH! *wheeze* (faints and falls over) --UM alumni class of before you were born Honestly I could care less, it's just a number. Just give it some dignity and give it to someone good. That's all I say, by the way D-Rob is #10, not that it matters, he can change it if he's better than Tate and everyone else.

going to be a run heavy spread? The year may start out run heavy as Tate gains experience but, RR and staff aren't recruiting all the WRs for nothing. What's going to happen next year when all that experince at RB is gone. I'm telling you that this is going to be a balanced offense.

because like you, i just don't know exactly. But as we move away from the traditional, pro-style offense, I just think that the vertical passing game will diminish and the ball will be spread around to a lot of different guys, marking the end of the go-to receiver days of Braylon, Terrell, etc. That's why I brought it up.

Whilst I agree that bestowing the #1 upon Denard would herald the full implementation of Rich Rod's identity at Michigan, I think the public backlash to his attempt to use the #1 jersey as a recruiting tool probably spooked him back into being rather conservative with its employment. In other words, I think it will stick with a true outside receiver, at least for now. I do think we can agree that if any type of player were to change the tradition, it would be a Denard-type QB. All that being said, I think if Ricardo Miller puts up even moderately good numbers, the 1 will be his by his junior year.

I second this and I will see to it that this will happen, even if he decommits and goes to like Tulane or something. We've seen decommits to the CUSA before.... Not that this is saying he'll decommit but uh, just playing the devil's advocate, and uh, it's not finalized until, uh, national signing day and, er... it could happen, not saying it will, but um, yeah. Sign = win.

I know the #1 Jersey is suppose to go to a WR, and Michigan and its fans (including myself) don't like to break tradition, but lets give the jersey to Zoltan Mesko this year.

I was surprised I had to scroll all the way down to #29 before any mention of Ricardo. I don't care if this kid has never played a college game yet. He's so full of so much passion an enthusiasm for this school and the game. Believe the hype, Miller is next in line for the coveted number 1 jersey people.

Jeremy Jackson He is the son of Fred Jackson, so he knows the history of the #1 and what it takes to play in the Big 10. You know that his dad has been feeding him the playbook ever since he committed to Michigan, so he should be ready to go early in his career.

We already have one year of the new system under our belts and JJ still has his Senior year of football to play. That means that he could be learning the Michigan system for 2 years before he officially steps foot on campus. Not to mention that he will know some of the players and build up a connection with them. I still feel that JJ is going to be the best bet to wear the #1 when he gets here.

Nothing against Jeremy Jackson he a great kid and from what i have heard and seen he gonna be a good player for us but knowing the history of the number 1 doesnt exactly qualify you for the number 1 and niehter does the fact that you know the offense..its about how well you perform and execute the offense that gives you a chance to get that number!
