Never OT: Wolverine on the Prowl

Submitted by rob f on March 7th, 2022 at 9:31 PM

May this be a good sign of things to come: a rare Wolverine sighting in Yellowstone National Park this past Saturday---perfect timing, I must say--- followed by an 8-0 hockey thrashing and sweep of FYS, then a huge basketball victory @ osu and a Big Ten Wrestling Championship on Sunday.

We're just days away from the B1G Basketball Tournament (and very likely also an invitation to The Big Dance), the B1G Hockey semifinals and a near-certain NCAA regional top seed, and Women's Basketball hoping to flex in the NCAA WBB Tournament.  As MGoUser Jonny Hintz described so well in his board post State of the Athletics Department  earlier today

https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/state-athletics-department

...we've been treated to so much success in nearly all Michigan Athletics this academic year.

Enjoy the article and photos of Gulo Gulo (and as an added bonus, links to more Wolverine-in-the-wild photos and video).

As described near the end of the USA Today/ForTheWin piece, one word:

So I read MGB every day and know just about every inside joke, reference, meme...but I must admit I don't know why/what FYS is. I get is MSU hockey, but maybe someone can enlighten me?

FYS has stood for "FuckYouState" ever since a vicious mugging of Wolverine skater Steve Kampfer by a couple spartie goons (Tropp and Conboy) at Yost Ice Arena several years ago.

https://youtu.be/fI-sYE1DsMs

The unmistakable chants of "Fuck you state! Fuck you state!" are very loud and clear beginning around the 1-minute mark of the video.

@3pg and @Germany_Shultz: Thanks for posting those excellent articles!

Researchers estimate there are between 250 and 625 wolverines in the Lower 48.

Ever since Montana banned trapping of this magnificent creature several years ago, the total US population of Wolverines has been slowly on the rise as Wolverines from Canada migrate south through much of the Rockies and reproduce to reestablish old territories.

HAIL! to their continued success!

I'd make it a nose tackle. Think of all the false starts as everyone moves but the center. And if he should hike the ball, his pad level won't be low enough. The wolverine will follow the ball right through his legs to the QB and get a TFL.

@ rob f, thanks for posting this about our beloved mascot. So cool to see pictures of it in the wild.

Wolverines rule!!!

And yes, buckeyes do look like turds 😛

As I'm in purgatory for the next decade and can't start my own threads, need to piggyback on the closest relevant one:

speaking of Wolverines on the prowl, Isaiah Livers got extended minutes tonight and was very effective against the Hawks, with a quadruple triple (three 3s, three assists, three steals and three personal fouls), kind of a basketball version of a Gordie Howe Hat Trick

and wolverines may even be up north.  remember robf and scanner helped me post photos of tracks on the SE edge of our farm, seen twice, along with some strange deer carcass events.  combined with a pre-dawn sighting of what looked like a silhouette of a wolverine running away, and i dunno.  could easily be up here, as the environment is very favorable in many places, and food abounds.  either way, fearsome critters, glad they are our mascot as opposed to a poisonous, worthless nut or a dude wearing a green skirt.

I'm amazed there are any tourists at all in Yellowstone this time of year.  The park is encased in snow and many roads are not open.  But I suppose no crowds is a big plus.

Mgosister and I just went away for a nice romantic weekend up in Maine at Acadia.  Snowy and cold, but still scenic and nice to get away from the crowds.

I'm convinced they're back in the Western UP. Have way too many good anecdotal reports from snowmobile guides I know in that area of increased sightings in the last two years of the animals themselves, unusual livestock kills, and photos of tracks.

"check mgohillbilly's name.  his real life wife is a beautiful (genetically unrelated) smart lady, very sweet, too."

I figured it was snark, and so was my post.

Given that it's now been two weeks since the Great Migration to new servers occurred, I've concluded that the inability to respond directly to posts is intentional. Hard to believe it's that difficult to maintain that feature in Droopy 9.

@don,

i knew re: snark, but his wife really is a champ.

disagree re: no replies being a feature, not a bug.  the number of hits on the site is almost certainly negatively affected by it, albeit maybe not by much, and AFAIK there was nothing wrong with replies that the main page should have them but the message board shouldn't.

"I'm amazed there are any tourists at all in Yellowstone this time of year. The park is encased in snow and many roads are not open. But I suppose no crowds is a big plus."

@True Blue Grit: Only a small part of Yellowstone is open in winter, mostly just from US-89 at the Roosevelt Arch (north entrance) east to Cooke City, in addition to the stretch of US-89 from the Roosevelt Arch south to the Mammoth Hot Springs area (partially open year round including the Mammoth Springs Campground and general store).

Otherwise, the remainder of Yellowstone is closed from mid-autumn until mid-spring to all travel other than by snowmobile or snow coach.

I saw a wolverine over the summer in Alaska near Denali National Park.  It was crossing the road at dusk as I was driving by.  It was in no hurry.  It looked right at me as it lumbered across the road as if to say "You want a piece of me?"  Yeah, no.

They really are magnificent animals.
